Incorrect names

In the August 16 2008 issue the Wytheville Enterprise featured a picture of McKenzie Ward donating her hair to lock of love. You incorrectly listed her mom as Kandi Ward her moms name is Cindy Ward and this caused quite and uproar in Grayson County where she is from. Will you please put a correction in your paper and be considerate of your information when it is printed. You never know when someone uses your paper to start a war. Thanks so much.

Obits

Why don’t you have your obits up to date?
I’ve been looking at these for at least a week.
Surely the papers you sell has the obits up to date.
Why not on your web site???
I do research and I’d like to know, at least during the week,
when people pass, not months later.
This problem concerns every news paper this company
is responsible for in South West VA.
You people need to get on the ball.

Breaking news alerts

I would really appreciate it if the site had the capability to provide email notification (elective of course) for breaking news. A good example of this would be the armed robbery yesterday, which the Enterprise reported online within a couple hours. IMO, that would be considered “breaking news”, and I would really like to receive email notifications when they occur. I would route them to my Blackberry so I would know of dangerous situations immediately.

That would provide a very valuable service to the community.

Breaking News Removal

Is there or will there be a way to remove posts of breaking news? The info posted about the crash on I77 was helpful but is time sensitive. Once any breaking news has passed then what happens to the posts? Will this info stay listed indefinitely?

News story not showing up

The breaking news story about the accident yesterday appeared in the news section for all regions:
http://www.swvatoday.com/main_category/news/

But it does not appear in the news section devoted to just Wytheville:
http://www.swvatoday.com/section_front/category/sve_news/

I usually frequent the latter, because I’m primarily interested only in the local news, so I did not see the story about the accident (and thus posted my own entry in the forums).

I think this is either a software bug or user error, because the story was flagged “Wythe County” like all other stories in the Wytheville section, and yet it did not appear.

Here’s a little tip for those that would like to see a higher-resolution version of the picture included with some articles. Only a small picture is shown in articles, but the picture is actually larger - essentially the web page tells your browser to reduce the size. Here’s how to view the full-size picture:

If you are using the Firefox browser (which I strongly recommend - it is free, has more features and is more secure than Internet Explorer), then you can simply right-click on the picture and select “View Image”.

If you are using Internet Explorer it takes a little more work. Right-click on the picture and select “Properties”. Take your mouse and select all of the text to the right of “Address (URL)”, then right-click on the selected text and choose “Copy”. Close that window, right-click on the Address bar and select Paste. Click on Go and the full size version will appear.

To see an example, look at the Police investigating armed robbery, then take a look at the full sized picture.

As a feature request, it would be handy if the site did this automatically, and simply wrapped the image in an anchor linking to the full-sized version.

Story comment location

It looks like one other thing needs to be tweaked with the new site design. When posting a comment to a story, there is still a field where the user can enter their location. It appears this is now ignored, and the location specified in their profile is used instead (and is retroactive - I changed my location and it changed for my previous comments). So it looks like the location field when posting comments needs to be removed.
