Zack Attack keys win over Cavs

You can call this one the Zack Attack.
Zach Griffith ran the offense, and Zack Yates had a career high 18 points. The two also alternated defensive assignments on Carroll County’s leading scorer Tyler Reavis as the Buffaloes beat Carroll County 71-55 in the opening round of the BB&T Holiday Tournament at Fort Chiswell Friday, December 26.
“We need to make some improvements, but a lot of people are stepping up for us,” said coach Brian Harman. “One night it’s Tucker (Crawford), one night it’s Brett (Holman), tonight it was Zack.”
Floyd trailed 10-6 in the first quarter, but finished on a 10-2 run to lead 16-12. Holman scored off the opening tip, Cole Peters had two baskets, Yates made a free throw, Crawford hit a three, Yates scored on a steal, Holman hit a bank shot and Yates converted a turnover basket.
Griffith opened the second with a lay in, Nathan Coartney made a free throw then hit a three for a 22-14 lead. Isaiah Thompson converted a three point play for the Cavs, and after a Coartney lay in,Brad Jones hit a three and James Lanning scored on a drive to cut the lead to 24-22.
Threes by Holman and Crawford put Floyd up by six and a basket by Yates made it 32-24. Floyd upped the lead to ten as a jumper by Yates, a fast break by Brogan Franklin and a drive by Yates made it 38-28 at the half.
An 11-2 run at the start of the third cut the lead to one. Crawford and Coartney made free throws, but a free throw by Lanning, a back cut by Reavis, a three by Lanning and two more baskets by Reavis pulled the Cavs within 40-39.
Crawford hit a three at 4:09 for the first basket of the quarter, Peters got three straight baskets inside and Yates scored in the lane to put Floyd up 51-41 at the end of three.
Carroll got as close as six in the fourth before the Buffaloes closed on a 20-10 run. Crawford scored off a turnover, Holman converted a length of court drive, Yates made a three point play off a drive and added another free throw, Coartney converted a three point play, Peters made a free throw, Holman scored on another full court drive, Peters made two free throws and a fast break lay in and Crawford drove the court for the final basket of the game.
Carroll: Reavis 16, Thompson 13, Jones 7, Marshall 4, Lanning 11, Atwood 4
Floyd: Crawford 14, Holman 11, Griffith 2, Peters 15, Franklin 2, Coratney 10, Yates 18
