Floyd Countys 11U team battles in the opening round of the Commonwealth Games.

Floyd County competitors did well at the Coventry Commonwealth Games earlier this month. Nearly 10,000 Virginians entered in a wide variety of competitions in the official state games.
Bryce Altizer won two medals. He took the gold medal for the 11-12 age group in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:49 and won the silver medal in the 800 with a time of 2:44.
Hannah Altizer took fifth in the 100 for the 8 and under age group with a time of 19.2.
The Lady Buffs 16U team won the gold medal in softball. It was a tight battle with Franklin County Lightning for the title.
Floyd opened with a 12-3 win over the Silver Bullets in the opening round. Floyd had a 12-0 win over West VA Rush in game two.
The third game was a preview of the gold medal game, as Floyd County and Franklin County ended their game with a 2-2 tie.
On the second day, Floyd won game four over Hill City Phillies 12-1. In the game to get to the medal round, Floyd defeated Blue Ridge Bombers 8-6 in eight innings.
In the rematch with Franklin County for the gold, Floyd won 3-2.

The Buffaloes got threee runs in the first, third and fifth innings, as well as getting runs in the other two innings. Silver Bullets avoided the shutout by getting three runs in the fifth.

The game ended early by mercy rule in the third. Floyd got seven runs in the first and four in the second.

Floyd went up 1-0 in the first and Franklin tied the game in the third. The Lady Buffs went up 2-1 in the fifth, but Franklin tied the game in the sixth.

The game was tied 3-3 after six innings. Floyd won by international tiebreaker rules with five runs in the eighth.

Jessi Hall scored the deciding run in the fifth inning. Franklin went up 1-0 in the first before Floyd came back with a 2-2 tie.

Floyd 11U girls basketball team had a 2-4 record, and just missed getting the bronze medal, losing a pair of games at the buzzer. In the bronze medal game, Floyd had a three point lead with less than two minutes left but lost in the closing seconds.
“We actually played very well,” said coach Jennifer Boothe. “We played two very good Richmond teams and a team from the Fredericksburg and DC area. We actually had some nine and ten-years old on the team.”
Ashton Lytton played on the Carroll County team that won the bronze medal in the 12U division.
