Ernest C. Coley Sr.
Ernest Calvin Coley Sr., 80, of Dale City died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.
A graveside service was held Friday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at West End Cemetery in Wytheville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Coley.
Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.
Duane C. Davis Sr.
Duane Calvin “Haney” Davis Sr., 65, of Bland died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008.
Funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Bland Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment was in the Newberry Family Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 11, 1942, in Pulaski, son of the late Vance and Ethel Kitts Davis. He enjoyed buying and selling at flea markets and he also enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by a half brother, John Robert Hamblin; and an infant sister.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Newberry Davis of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Kevin McGuire of Bland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Duane Calvin Jr. and Paula Mustard Davis of Bland, Bradley Scott and Rachel Davis of Bland, and Robert Allen Davis of Bramwell, W.Va.; and six grandchildren, Krystal McGuire, Kaitlyn McGuire, Granger Davis, Brooklyn Davis, Ravin Davis and Hallie Davis.

Kathy P. Looney
Kathy Emma Pennington Looney, 53, of Bastian died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.
Funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. Leroy Long officiating. Interment was in the Kenner Kitts Cemetery.
She was born April 4, 1955, in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Bastian Church of God and was employed at Brewer Automotive Components.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carter and Angela Pennington of Wytheville, Mitchell and Trista Looney of Bastian; grandson, Devin Pennington of Bastian; her mother and stepfather, Janice Pennington Long and Levi Long of Bastian; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheila and Michael Rivers of Bastian, Tammy and Joseph Consentino of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Frank and Shirley Pennington of Craig County, and Randy Pennington of Bastian; stepsister, Ginny Long of Cockysville, Md.; three stepbrothers and their wives, Dewey and Sherry Long of Rural Retreat, Leroy and Shirley Long of Tazewell, David and Liz Long of Tyro, N.C.; five nephews; eight nieces; and many other relatives and special friends.

Patsy Madeline McDaniel, 72, of Max Meadows died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008.
Complete arrangements will be announced later by Reese Funeral Home in Austinville.
Lloyd W. Shockley
Lloyd Wayne Shockley, 66, of Richmond died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at Bliley’s Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue in Richmond. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
Born April 28, 1942, in Wytheville, he was raised in both Wytheville and Salem. After college, he and his brother Norman prospered in successful careers in advertising while living in Richmond.
He was president and owner of The Shockley Agency and On Hold Marketing for many years. His creativity cane still be seen on TV and heard throughout the country through his On Hold message service.
A love of acting and success in business were a proud chapter in his life. But his true love could be found in his family and friends. It was here that his inspiration and warm heart will forever live in the hearts and lives of those he cared for most.
He is remembered as a true Renaissance man. An actor, singer, pied piper (aka Poppi), to all children and animals, magician, business owner, civic leader, radio DJ, speech teacher and writer are only some of the talents of this remarkable man.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Treva Dunford Shockley; and brother, Norman Sawyers Shockley.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Lynn; son, Kent Poulos and wife Renee Poulos of Richmond; father, Lloyd Sawyers Shockley and wife Frankie Shockley of Salem; two granddaughters, Karina Mae Poulos and Laney Anna Poulos, both of Richmond; and numerous other relatives and friends dear to his heart.

Harold N. Suthers
Harold N. Suthers, 76, of Wytheville died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Carrington Place in Wytheville.
Funeral service will be held 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank McDonald officiating. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the West End Cemetery with the American Legion Post 9 conducting military graveside rites. The family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
He graduated from Wytheville High School in 1951 where he played football. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1952 to 1954 and was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Albert E. & Bettie W. Suthers, wife; Laura Suthers, and seven brothers; Charles, Ernest, Paul, Herman, Thomas, Lloyd and Carl Suthers.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cella Diane and Larry W. Porterfield of Wytheville; two granddaughters and spouses, Chandra M. and Rodney D. Fultz of Roanoke and Cristin E. and Terry D. Cox of Wytheville; a great-grandson, Tanner Cox; a sister, Helen Sue Reardon of Rural Retreat; special caregiver, Arlene L. Haymaker of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Edwin F. Wilson
Edwin Forest Wilson, 84, of Wytheville died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008.
Funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at Petunia Christian Church with the Rev. Dennis Martin and the Rev. Rufus Spence officiating. Interment was in West End Cemetery with American Legion 9 conducting graveside military rites.
He was born May 30, 1924, in Carroll County, son of the late Bernard Edwin and Geneva Forest Edwards Wilson. He graduated from Hillsville High School in Carroll County in 1942 and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture education and later a master’s degree. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1945 and was discharged Nov. 28, 1946, with the rank of T4 (Sgt.) having served in the Japanese Occupation Army as a lineman, telephone and telegraph installation supervisor.
He married Hazel Howell on June 18, 1950, and he began his teaching career at Thomas Walker High School in Lee County as a vocational agriculture instructor. In July 1952, he was employed at George Wythe High School and enjoyed teaching his students the fundamentals of crop and livestock management and necessary shop/tool skills. He became principal at George Wythe High School in 1967 and subsequently County Vocational Director in 1975, retiring in 1988,
He was active in professional and civic organizations throughout his career and served as president of the Virginia State Agricultural Teachers Assoc. and parliamentarian for the Virginia Education Assoc. He was also president of the Wythe County Kiwanis Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge 82 AF & AM serving as master in 1974.
He was talented in many fields including being a master craftsman in wood and made most of the wood furniture in his home as well as many smaller items including children’s toys and Nativity sets enjoyed by many families. He devoted his spare time to gardening, fruit tree production and being a “honey bee man,” all skills that he enjoyed sharing. He was co-founder of the Mountain Empire Beekeepers Assoc. in 1980 and served as secretary for the organization.
He was a member of Petunia Christian Church for a number of years and served as co-chairman of the building addition for Petunia and was an elder emeritus.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Beamer; a nephew, Jimmy Beamer; and a niece, Donna Alderman Surratt.
Survivors include his wife and the love of his life, Helen Howell Wilson of Wytheville; children, Bernard Edwin Wilson of Troy, N.Y., Brenda Wilson Hopkins and her husband Hugh Caldwell Hopkins of Rural Retreat, Barry Forest Wilson and his wife Susan Compton Wilson of Ridley Park, Pa.; grandchildren, Brenton Forest Wilson, Chandler Caroline Hopkins, Fletcher Layne Wilson and Jasper Layne Wilson; two sisters, Vista Wilson Alderman and Amicita Beamer Hammond; nephews, Nelson Alderman, Andy Beamer and Avery Beamer; and a niece, Charlotte Beamer Shockley.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc., 4504 Starkey Rd., Suite 115, Roanoke, VA 24018, in memory of Edwin Wilson.

Donald Eugene Wygal, 73, of Roanoke died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008.
