Wythe County West All-Stars finish runner-up in tournament

The Galax All-Stars defeated Wythe County West 14-1 Tuesday afternoon to win the Dixie Youth Baseball District One AAA tournament.
The double elimination tournament began June 27 at Ager Park in Wytheville with six teams vying for the championship.
Galax now advances to the AAA state tournament to be held at Grayson County Recreation Park beginning on July 19. Galax was also awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy by a vote of game officials.
Here is a recap of the games played in the tournament.

Game One – Galax 8, Carroll County National 7
Carroll County National scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and Galax scored two in the bottom of the first.
Carroll scored twice in the top of the fourth to go up 6-2, but Galax came back with six in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Carroll County scored once in the sixth inning but Galax held on for the win.

Game Two – Floyd County 13, Carroll County American 2
Carroll American led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Floyd County took the lead with three runs in the second, two more in the third and put the game away with eight runs in the fourth. Carroll mustered one more run in the fourth.

Game Three – Wythe County West 1, Wythe County East 0
Wythe County West won a hard-fought battle with Wythe County East by scoring the only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Game Four – Carroll County National 17, Carroll County American 9
Carroll County National took a 6-3 lead after one inning of play and never looked back as it cruised to the victory.
Carroll National scored six in the first inning, one each in the second and third, five in the fourth, and two in the fifth and sixth innings.

Game Five – Galax 13, Floyd County 3
Galax scored two runs in each of the first and third innings and exploded for nine runs in the fifth to gain the win.

Game Six – Wythe County East 14, Carroll County National 11
In a game that went back and forth all night, Wythe County East prevailed in extra innings. At the end of the first inning, Wythe East led 2-1.
Carroll National tied the game with a run in the second inning. Wythe East took the lead at 5-3 by outscoring Carroll National 3-1 in the third inning.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning. Carroll County National scored six runs in the top of the fifth and held Wythe East to none to take a commanding 9-5 lead going into the last inning.
Carroll County then added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 11-5. Wythe East scored a run to pull within five runs at 11-6. Then with two outs, it scored five more times to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
Carroll National went three up, three down in the top of the seventh, and Wythe East won the game on a three run home run by Travis Jakubiak in the bottom of the seventh.

Game Seven – Galax 12, Wythe County West 0
Galax scored three in the first, two in the second, four in the third and three in the fifth while holding Wythe County West scoreless to win the game. Galax pitcher Cody Spencer struck out 12 batters in five innings.

Game Eight – Wythe County West 9, Floyd County 8
This was an amazing ball game. Wythe County West scored one run in each of the first two innings to lead 2-0 at the end of three. Floyd County tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth to send the game into extra innings after setting down Wythe West in order in the bottom of the sixth.
After neither team scored in the seventh, each team scored one run in the eighth. Neither team scored in the ninth and went into the 10th inning with the score tied at 4-4.
Floyd County took the lead in the 10th inning by scoring a seemingly insurmountable three runs to take a 7-4 lead. With two outs and two on in the bottom of the 10th, Jordan Crockett hit a three-run home run to tie the game.
Neither team scored in the 11th, and the game went into the 12th all tied at 7-7. Floyd County scored one run in the top of the 12th. Wyatt Sowers led off the bottom of the 12th with a walk. Tanner Cox singled, sending Sowers to third and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with no one out.
Once again Jordan Crockett came to the plate and unloaded a bases-clearing triple to win the game.

Game Nine – Galax 19, Wythe County East 0
Galax scored two in the second, 13 in the third and four in the fourth while holding Wythe East to no run in a game shortened to four innings. Pitcher Eric Hawks of Galax faced the minimum of 12 batters while striking out eight.

Game Ten (Championship Game) Galax 14, Wythe County West 1
Galax scored five in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to defeat Wythe County West for the championship. Galax pitcher Stew Merdian struck out 13 batters.
