Wythe County athletes do well in region track meet

There were three region champions from among the group of athletes from Wythe County who competed in the Region C track and field meet held Saturday at Radford University.
Hannah Hadaway (whose picture was in Tuesday’s edition) of Rural Retreat placed first in the 100-meter hurdles 16.8). Martha Walters of George Wythe won the high jump (4-10). And Ethan Mills of George Wythe claimed first place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.26).
Those three will be joined by several other Wythe County athletes who placed in the top six to qualify for the Group A state track and field meet, which will be held this Saturday at Radford University.
In addition to her win in the 100-meter hurdles, Hadaway also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles (51.4).
Several other local athletes placed in more than one events. Andrew Hamm of Fort Chiswell placed second in the high jump (6-2), was third in the long jump (20-10) and placed fifth in the 200 meters (23.7).
Austin Grubb of Fort Chiswell placed third in the 3200 meters (10:33) and was fifth in the 1600 meters (4:48).
Jessica Turpin of Fort Chiswell was third in the long jump (15-6) and was third in the 100 meters (13.1).
Will Sawyers of George Wythe placed fourth in the discus (151-3).
Michael Mills of Rural Retreat placed sixth in the long jump (20-0½).
The Rural Retreat girls’ track team was the top finisher from Wythe County. The Rural Retreat girls’ team placed fourth in the region. The Fort Chiswell girls’ team was 12th and the George Wythe girls’ team finished 13th.
The Fort Chiswell boys’ team finished in a tie for eighth place. The George Wythe boys’ team was 10th and the Rural Retreat boys’ team was 16th.
