The Floyd wrestling team finished fourth in the Region C tournament at Galax Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1. Five wrestlers qualified for the Group A state tournament, with Josh Penn winning the 285 pound championship.
Joining Penn at the state tournament by finishing in the top four of their division are Tyler Beckner (second), Max Lander (fourth), Daniel Bradford (160) and Zach Bonham (171). Caleb Vass, who finished fifth at 215, is a state alternate.
Also participating in the regionals were Jacob Haus (119), Patrick Grady (125), Shannon McDaniel (135), and Shawn Board (189).
McDaniel made history as the first girl to win a first round Region C match. McDaniel, the Three Rivers District runner up, beat Jacob Weaver of Northwood 4-0 on Friday.
McDaniel took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and held advantage for most of the second quarter, although she didn’t add any points. McDaniel added two more points on a take down at 1:41 in the third quarter.
“I wanted to build as many points as I could,” she said. “You don’t want to lose by making a mistake at the end.”
Haus, Grady, and Board lost their first round matches. Bradford, Bonham, Vass and Penn had first round byes. Beckner and Lander won their first round matches by pin.
Beckner steadily built an 8-0 lead over Corey Plessinger of Parry McCluer before sticking the pin with 20 seconds left in the final period. Lander needed only 28 seconds to pin Christian Bradberry of George Wythe.
In the championship finals, Penn captured the 285 championship by technical fall. The match was declared over when his margin against James Clyburn of Grayson County reached 21-6.
At 130, Beckner took second when Tanner Sutphin of Radford won an 8-3 decision. Zach Bonham got second at 171 when he was pinned by Josh Adams of Chilhowie at 2:36.
In the consolation finals, Lander got fourth at 152 as Ethan Bullock of Covington took a 6-2 decision. Bradford got fourth at 160 when Bo Pollard of Grayson County took a 9-2 decision.
