Chilhowie High School English teacher Phyllis McMurray always has her seniors write a valedictory speech before graduation.
This year, she recalled, Alexander Charles Cole Blevins wrote about his plans to go to college, get a career, a wife, and a house. Blevins, 17, graduated June 8, but this Sunday afternoon he was killed in a car wreck on state Route 638 near Carlock Creek Road.
Around 3 p.m., the teenager lost control of his 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, hit an embankment and was ejected from the car. He wasn’t wearing his seat belt, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. M.T. Conroy.
“It was so awful to hear,” said McMurray, who taught Blevins 12th-grade English. “He sat right in front of my desk and was such a good student, the All-American boy. I can still see him sitting there doing his work.” Blevins’ government teacher, Keith Holley, had similar comments about the young man. “I never head anything negative out of him or about him,” said Holley.
“He was a good student, was exempt from exams because of his good grades and was always quiet and positive.”
Blevins was born in Washington County, Aug. 8, 1989, to Ronald and Rose Mary Pack Blevins. He planned to attend Virginia Highlands Community College in the fall. He was employed at Food City in Chilhowie and attended the Chilhowie First Church of God. He was a fan of the University of Tennessee, the Baltimore Ravens, and loved to play Texas Hold’em.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the Chilhowie First Church of God with the Rev. Bobby Dunn offi ciating. Interment will follow in Westwood Memorial Gardens.
