Volleyball team beats Galax

The varsity volleyball team ended a frustrating losing streak of close decisions by beating Galax 3-2 in a five-game match at Floyd Thursday, September 13.
The Buffaloes won the opening game 25-19. Floyd started the game with a 4-1 lead.
Then the Maroon Tide came back with four straight to take a 5-4 lead.
Floyd tied the game 5-5, then Galax regained an 8-6 lead.
Molly Brown served as Floyd regained the lead for good, going in front of the Tide 12-8. Galax cut the lead to three, then Floyd answered for a 13-9 advantage.
Katie Long had some good play at the net as the Buffaloes upped the lead to 15-11. Floyd led by 18-12 before the Tide cut the margin to five.
Long had a pair of kills as Floyd went up 19-13. Galax cut the lead to 19-16, and then after a timeout got two more points to get within 19-18.
A kill by Brown stopped the run, and then Vanessa Quesenberry served an ace to up the lead to four. Brown finished off another point with a kill before Galax scored again to get within four at 23-19.
Floyd finished out the game with two more points, game point coming off a block by Idalina Walker.
Galax came back to even the match at 1-1 by taking the second game 25-20.
Floyd regained the lead in the third game, with one of the best showings of the season. The Buffaloes downed the Maroon Tide 25-6. During a key stretch, Quesenberry put in 13 straight service points.
But Galax wasn’t finished yet. The Tide came back to win the fourth game 25-16 and force a fifth game.
But Floyd finished off the deciding fifth game 15-9.
The coaching staff praised Quesenberry’s play for the match. “For the match she was 23 of 25 serving,” said assistant coach Leon Hubbard. “She served four aces and also had eight digs.
“We missed her at Galax (the first match in the series with the Tide, earlier this month). She lost two first cousins in the accident in Cana.”
Also playing well in Thursday’s match: Molly Brown had 14 kills and a stuff block and was 14 of 15 serving, with three aces.
Katie Long contributed eight kills and Courtney Smith had five kills and eight digs.
Arlene Montgomery anchored the defense with 28 digs. Idalina Walker was 24 of 26 serving, with three aces.
