A farm tractor fire that spread to a hay field and hay bales injured one firefighter on Wednesday and caused an estimated $11,000 in damage, one fire official said.
According to Wytheville Fire Department Chief Ronnie King, it took firefighters from Wytheville and Max Meadows six hours to battle the blaze off Lover’s Lane on Eddie Spraker’s property in Wytheville.
King said that a tractor and hay bales were in flames when fire crews arrived at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Firefighters aren’t sure what caused the blaze, which destroyed the tractor and 40 round bales, and scorched about an acre of hay field, King said.
A Max Meadows firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, the chief said.
“The field was so full of smoke (it was) like being in a house that was on fire,” he said.
