Three wrestlers win district

The Floyd County wrestling team finished third and produced three individual district champions at the Three Rivers District tournament at Glenvar Thursday, February 21.
Max Lander won the 152 pound title, Zach Bonham won at 171, and Josh Penn won at 285. They and eight other team mates advance to the Region C tournament, Friday and Saturday at Galax.
“It was a good tournament for us,” said coach Mike Murphy. “It’s the best showing we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
In the first round Floyd’s first three wrestlers finished third. Jacob Haus (119) and Patrick Grady (125) were pinned in the first quarter, while Tyler Beckner (130) lost by decision.
Shannon McDaniel picked up the first Floyd win, downing Jacob Sheppard of Radford with a major decision margin of 10-2. Adam Arno lost by decision to Julian Minter of Radford at 140.
At 189 pounds, Shawn Board built a big lead in points before pinning Devon Carroll of Glenvar at the 5 minute mark.
In the championship round, McDaniel took the silver at 135 when she was pinned by Jake Hooker of Glenvar at :37.
Lander picked up the first championship of the night with an 11-8 decision over Zach Hill of Glenvar. Daniel Bradford finished second at 160 on a 14-7 decision to James Clark of Radford.
Bonham took the gold at 171, winning by disqualification against Sam Huffman of Glenvar. Board finished second when he was pinned at 2;57 by Tanner Will of Radford at 2:57.
Caleb Vass was second at 215 when he was pinned by Alex Asimakopoulos of Glenvar at 2:58. Penn closed out the tournament with a fall victory over Craig Russell of Glenvar at :58.
Glenvar won the team title with 179 points. Radford was second with 151 and Floyd was third with 123.
The Region C tournament begins Friday at Galax. For the first time, the Hogoheegee District will compete with the other three districts, increasing the field from ten to 16 teams.
First round matches and first round consolation matches will be held Friday, starting at 6:00. The Saturday session begins at 10:00 with quarterfinal matches.
Second round consolation matches are at noon. The third session begins at 2:00 with semifinal competitions.
Finals and 3rd-4th place matches will begin at 7:30. The top four in each weight division advance to the Group A state tournament at the Salem Civic Center March 7-8.
