Floyd County High School senior Lindsey Thompson has accepted a scholarship offer to play college basketball for the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Thompson is one of several Lady Buffs to continue their basketball career at the college level, but she is the first to verbally accept an offer prior to the senior season at high school.
Thompson suffered a knee injury, but that did not affect her scholarship offer.
“They actually offered her before she got hurt this summer,” said FCHS girls’ basketball coach Alan Cantrell. Thompson injured her knee at a summer basketball camp.
“The college is restricted by the NCAA from contacting high school athletes at certain times,” Cantrell said. “But as soon as they were allowed to contact Lindsey, they called to confirm they were still interested in her.”
Cantrell said Thompson had also drew interest from East Carolina University, the North Carolina University at Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
Thompson is known for her ball handling, three-point shooting and defensive abilities. She has been the starting point guard for the last two seasons.
During that span the Buffs have had two undefeated regular seasons and have lost only two games, both to the state champions in the Group A tournament in Richmond.
Cantrell said he expects Thompson to be able to play by January.
