Floyd County was 10th best in Group A competitions last year. According to the Virginia High School League’s Wachovia Cup standings, Clarke County was the best and Radford was second.

The VHSL awards points in state competition, with 50 points for a fi rst place fi nish, 45 for second, and fi ve points less for each place down to eighth. Floyd got a total of 95 points for the 2006-07 year, based on 50 points for a golf state championship and 45 for a runner up fi nish in girls’ basketball and wound up tied with Riverheads, who also accumulated 95 Wachovia Cup points.

Clarke County had 390 points, winning girls cross country, boys’ cross country, cheer, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball and boys track. The Eagles were second in the state in girls’ track and girls’ soccer.

Radford had 365 points by placing in 10 sports at the state level. The Bobcats won boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer state titles.

Glenvar was third with 290 points, winning the state in volleyball and wrestling. Gate City was fourth at 275. George Mason, who won the boys’ tennis title, was fi fth at 202.5.

The rest of the top ten included Mathews at sixth with 155, Northumberland seventh with 147.5, Essex eighth with 112.5, and Giles ninth with 102.5.

Next came Grayson County of Region C and Nelson County, who tied for 12th with 92.5 points.

The next best fi nish in Region C came from Castlewood, who tied for 22ndwith 75 points. James River was 27th with 70 points, Rural Retreat tied for 32d with 52.5, John Battle and George Wythe tied for 36th with 42.5 points, Covington tied for 40th with 35, Galax was 42nd with 30, Patrick Henry was 43rd with 25, Chilhowie tied for 48th with 15, and Holston fi nished in 50th place by totalling 7.5 points.
