Tazewell County grand jury hands down 56 indictments

TAZEWELL – A superseding indictment against one of the defendants in last year’s attempted murder of a police and drug distribution charges against a North Tazewell man are among the 56 indictments handed down by a Tazewell County grand jury July 8.
Tracy Marie Coxton, who was scheduled for trial in September on charges of attempted capitol murder and robbery, now has the additional charges of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Commonwealth’s Attorney Dennis Lee said his office presented the indictment for use of a firearm based on testimony at Scottie Stinson’s sentencing. A statement presented at that hearing indicated Coxton told Stinson to shoot Deputy Eric Mullins.
The grand jury also handed down an indictment against Curtis Eugene Carter, 52, of North Tazewell for distribution of Fentanyl. Carter is charged with three separate counts of distributing the Schedule II controlled substance.
The Commonwealth presented a total of 56 indictments on 55 individuals with 31 individuals residing in Tazewell County, Virginia and 24 individuals residing outside of Tazewell County.  Of the 24 individuals residing outside of Tazewell County, 15 reside in West Virginia.  Of the 56 individuals indicted, 36 were men and 19 were women.  The Grand Jurors returned 55 True Bills for a total of 233 counts.  Nineteen (19) indictments were originally sealed pending arrest.
