Saltville is getting tougher on speeding drivers.
The town’s police department gained the town council’s approval Tuesday for a plan to add $200 to the regular speeding fines for driving too fast in residential areas.
Officer J.C. Robinson told the council the “enhanced fine areas” could be set up in different areas based on the number of complaints about speeding drivers.
Old Quarry Road is one such area where residents worry about pedestrians and other drivers being killed by all-too-common speeding in the area.
Advertisements will be run in the local newspaper notifying residents and drivers before an enhanced fine area is set up.
It’s a practice in use in other localities including Charlottesville that has also recently approved its police officers to add $200 to speeding tickets they issue on three streets.
