Soccer team falls to Patrick

They had the home fans behind them as the rallied in the first half. But the Floyd boys’ soccer team was outscored in the second half and lost to Patrick County 4-1 Friday.
“It was an incredibly hard fought game,” said coach Joe Klein. “We had fallen behind 4-1 in the match at Stuart earlier in the year, and the crowd got behind us when we rallied.”
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead at the 10 minute mark. Then the passing of Daniel Hogan and Nelson Morales set up a Buffalo goal from Adam Arno for a 1-1 tie.
Floyd kept the momentum going until halftime, but got off to a slow start in the second half. Patrick got two quick goals to go up 3-1, and added another goal late in the contest.
“Andrew Blevins had several fantastic saves for us, including some on breakaways by them,” Klein said. Blevins finished the game with 20 saves.
Floyd had opened with a 7-1 loss to Patrick County at Stuart Monday, March 17. Arno had the Buffalo goal.
Blevins “had a phenomenal game for the first time,” Klein said. “He had 40 saves.”
The Buffaloes followed that match with the first victory of the season, a 3-1 win over Grayson County Thursday, March 20 at Independence. Nathan Weiss had two goals and Morales had one.
Floyd’s planned rematch with Grayson on Monday was postponed. The Buffs will open the district season April 7 at Auburn at 6:00.
Klein started the year with an emphasis on conditioning. In addition to returning talent, the Buffaloes look for help from newcomers like freshman Dakota Carrico and Luis Vasquez, an exchange student from Ecuador.
