Anderson
Lettie (Cubby) Anderson, 86, of Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at her residence.
She was born May 26, 1921 in Atkins to the late Lester and Susie Phipps Haga. She was the widow of Richard G. Anderson.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Barbara Anderson of Troutdale, Frank and Sue Anderson and David and Linda Anderson, all of Independence; two daughters-in-law, Edith Anderson and Shirley Anderson, both of Independence; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Oct. 14, 2007, in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence. Interment was held in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Darrin Brannock and the Rev. Eddie Roland officiated the services.

Polly Gladys Cox Earnest, 84, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, W. Rudolph Earnest; her parents, Cullen and Gladys Cox; three brothers, Robert Cox, Ralph “Gike” Cox, and at age 19, June Cox.
Survivors include her daughter, Darlene Earnest of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Earnest of Troutdale; two sisters and brother-in law, Eva “Toots” and Elmer Jarvis of Sugar Grove and Ann C. Jennings of Marion; a special granddaughter, Amanda Earnest of Troutdale; one sister-in-law, Loveita E. Hamm of Middle Town, Del.; one brother-in-law, Dwight and wife, Lillian Earnest, of Florida; a special niece, Connie Cox Potter of North Carolina; a very special nephew, Danny Jarvis, wife, Rhonda, and daughter, Kendal, of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member and attended church all of the time, with the Rev. Bill Gwinn and Rev. Kenny Price officiating. Burial will follow at the Ridgelawn Cemetery.

Ergenbright
Nellie Jane (Clatterbaugh) Ergenbright, 84, widow of Charles William Ergenbright, of Staunton, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, in King’s Daughters’ Community Health and Rehab Center.
She was born April 2, 1923, in Staunton, a daughter of the late Homer Watson and Margaret Lynn (Gibson) Clatterbaugh.
Prior to retirement, she had been employed by King’s Daughters’ Hospital in the dietary department and Ray’s Shop and Save. She was a doll collector.
She was a lifelong member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Wilbur Gordon Clatterbaugh, Charles Harmon Clatterbaugh, John Braxton Clatterbaugh, Chester Bilmer Clatterbaugh, Burnett Scott Clatterbaugh, and Edgar Clatterbaugh; three sisters, Ruth Clatterbaugh, Margaret Campbell, and Mary Clatterbaugh; and a granddaughter, Donna Lynn Ergenbright.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Wayne and Patty Ergenbright of Churchville, Joe David and Faye Ergenbright of Raphine, and Ray and Carol Ergenbright of Staunton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lindy Lou and Marion Gough of Swoope, Bonnie Gail and Buddy Thomas of Fishersville, and Sharon Sue and Mac Buchanan of Saltville; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard Watson and Mary Ann Clatterbaugh of Staunton; and 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, in Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Douglas Akers officiating. Interment will follow in Thornrose Cemetery

Alicia Nicole Gillespie, 24, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Gillespie
Survivors include her father, Henry J. “Buddy” Gillespie of Rich Valley; one brother, Joseph Chad Gillespie of Rich Valley; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, in the Ridgedale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willis Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Grinstead
Barbara S. Grinstead, 58, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2007, at her home.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Shirley and Bethel Snider Steele. She was a member of the Lowman Valley Church and was employed by Coffman Stairs in Marion.
Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Grinstead; one son, Jamie Edwin Grinstead; one uncle, Jessie Steele of Marion; two aunts, Joyce Teaster and Violet Hopkins, both of Marion; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Mercer of Marion and Bonnie Haga and husband, Don, of Chilhowie; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and a wonderful host of friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday evening, Oct. 14, 2007, at the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Steve Hutton and the Rev. Mike Haga officiated the services. Graveside services were held Monday morning, Oct. 15, 2007, at Thomas Cemetery.

Hutton
William Edward “Edd” Hutton, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at home.
He was born Jan. 27, 1927. He was the first child of Jim “Ed” and Helen Halloway Hutton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Hutton; infant son, whose name was to be William Barnett Hutton; and sister, Rachel Meek.
He served at the close of World War II in the 349th Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division whose job was to maintain the neutrality of the disputed boundary line between Italy and Yugoslavia, which was named the Morgan Line for the British General Morgan who negotiated its location. He was a lifelong member of the Old Glade Presbyterian Church and had been involved locally in its affairs as well as those of other agricultural and political organizations. His employment consisted of assistance in the operation of his families’ farms and other enterprises.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Author Edward “Bucky” Hutton and Regina, Jim and Gail Hutton and George and Karen Hutton; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, James R. “Bill” and Cathy Hutton, three sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Scott Duncan, Maggie and William Naylor and Georgie and Wayne Moore; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Monday evening, Oct. 15, 2007, at Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade. The Rev. Tim Byrd and Dr. Robert N. Lominack Jr. officiated the services. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 16, 2007, at Old Glade Cemetery.

Shelby “Jean” Fortner Jones, 67, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, in Hospice of Charleston Hospice Center, Mount Pleasant, S.C.
She was formerly of Atkins and has resided with her daughter for the past seven years in Goose Creek, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Clarence and Carrie Fortner; her husband, William “Bunny” Jones; and three sisters, Evelyn Fortner, Marie Kimberling, and Louise Crigger.
She was employed at Virginia House Furniture in Atkins with 20 years of service.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Glenn Aker of Goose Creek, S.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Tessia Jones of Atkins; two grandsons, Brandon Aker and Jerrad Aker, both of Goose Creek, S.C.; one granddaughter, Jodie Jones of Atkins, two step-grandsons, John Bowling of Max Meadows and James Hess of Atkins; one step-great-grandchild, Katlyn Bowlin; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 2007, at Seaver-Brown Chapel. The Rev. Neville Mozingo officiated the services. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.

Reva Arlean Phillips, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at her home in Marion.
She was born in West Virginia to the late Lola and Keaton Walker and was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest Prince; her second husband, Robert Phillips; four children; eight sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include three sons, Dallan Prince, Dewval Prince and Dacil Prince; two daughters, Rilla Leonard and Rhonda Carrico; and 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Bradley’s Funeral Home in Marion with Elder Dan Blevins officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Crotty Cemetery in Lashmeet, W.Va.
