Blevins

Jackie “Jack” Dean Blevins, 57, of Lexington, died Saturday, June 21, 2008 in Marion.
He was born in Smyth County, Feb. 1, 1951 to Willard Jack Blevins and Lessie Anderson Blevins.
He was a skilled dry wall professional, which was a family trade. He was a simple man and was loved by all who knew him, especially his grandkids. He was of the Baptist faith and proceeded in death by his father.
Survivors include wife, Debbie Miller Blevins of Lexington, N.C.; daughter, Jacklyn Blevins Sink and husband, Zach Sink of Lexington, N.C.; two sons, Brian Blevins and wife, Mary Beth, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mark Blevins of Marion; 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Trent, Matthew, Phillip, Josh, Christopher, Samantha, Sarah, Savannah, Brianna and Gunner; his mother and stepfather, Lessie Blevins Stapleton and Doug Stapleton of Rural Retreat; stepmother, Dorothy Blevins of Marion; one sister, Sherrie Jump of Thomasville, N.C.; five brothers, Larry Blevins of Lexington, Dale and Ted Blevins of Max Meadows, and Alan and Curt Blevins of Marion; three half-sisters, Jill Robinson, Julie Jones and Lori Blevins, all of Marion; many nieces, nephews and good friends; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patti and Jeremy: and his beloved dog, Rowdy.
A graveside service was conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, June 30, at Forest Hill Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Avery Varnadore and burial followed at Forest Hill.
The family received friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Davidson Funeral Home.

Brooks

James Harvey Brooks, 92, of Marion, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at Francis Marion Manor from congestive heart failure after a brief illness.
A veteran of World War II, he served his country honorably in the 8th Army Air Corps, 447 Heavy Bomber Group stationed in Epschwich, England, as an electrician on B-17 bombers. After the war, he returned to Marion where he worked for Appalachian Power Company for more than 30 years as a linesman. He retired in 1978.
He was active in Local 4667 VFW as a “lifetime” member, attended Calvary Baptist Church where he frequently sang solos and was always willing to lend a helping hand to community projects and individuals needing help.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Polly Brooks Atkins (husband, Steve) of Marion.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eula Meek Brooks, two daughters, Susie Heath and husband, Dale, of Gloucester Point, and Patty Brooks Stoots and husband, Gary, of Marion; two sons, James D. Brooks and wife, Susan, of Williamsburg and Donald R. Brooks and wife, Amy, of Dublin; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating.
Interment will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall at the church to celebrate his life.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Brooks

Wilbur Worley Brooks Sr., 82, died Sunday, June 29, 2008.
He was born in West Virginia to the late Drewery and Ada Blevins Brooks and was preceded in death by his wife, Ura Katherine Tolbert Brooks, and two brothers, Edgar Brooks and Harvey Alan Brooks.
He was a member of the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church.
He was a retired employee of Harwood Manufacturing in Marion.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur W. Brooks Jr., and wife, Angie, of Marion; two brothers and two sisters; three grandchildren, Dora Katherine Brooks, Wilbur W. “Wil” Brooks III, and Branden Thomas Brooks.
A visitation was held Tuesday, July 1, at the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church from 6-7:30 p.m. with funeral services to follow with the Rev. Wesley Eller officiating. Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the church cemetery.

Delp

Peggy L. Delp, 70, of Comers Rock, died Friday, June 27, 2008 at her residence.
She was born Oct., 8, 1937 in Atkins to the late Theodore and Blanche Geraldine Forrester Leonard.
She was preceded in death by a brother, A.G. Leonard.
Survivors include her husband, F. Straley Delp of the home; two daughters and spouses, Sandra and Benny Medley of Comers Rock and Robin and David Hampton of Galax; one son, Steven S. Delp of Comers Rock; two sisters, Hazel Henderlite and Kate Overbay, both of Atkins; one brother and spouse, Ronald and Delia Leonard of Marion; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 30, at 3 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with interment following at Comers Rock Cemetery with the Rev. R.C. Leonard officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1235 Beaver Dam Rd. Hillsville, VA 24343.

Mooney

Eugene Franklen Mooney, 74, of Galax, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at Golden Living Center HealthCare. 
He was born in Smyth County on July 24, 1933 to Washington and Emma Mooney.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Elizabeth Stamper Mooney. 
Survivors include his daughter, Sue Huffman of Mt. Airy, N.C.; one son, Dana E. Mooney of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Roger Mooney of Bluefield, W.Va., and Jerry Mooney of Bluefield, Va.; three sisters and two sons-in-law, Mary Carter of Marion, Gayle and Tim Nicewonder of Bluefield, W.Va., and Peggy and Scott Asburg of Princeton, W.Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer and Ricky Kirby and Jason Liddle; four great-grandchildren, Candice and Dakota Butcher, Josh Liddle, and Shelley Kirby.
Visitation will be held at Twin County Funerals Tuesday, July 1, from 7 until 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at Twin County Funerals Sanctuary Wednesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Camet Spivey, the Rev. Standrod Carmichael and the Rev. Greg Leagan officiating and burial will follow at Great Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Woodlawn with military rites by Hillsville Post #1115. 
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Peake

Kenneth Peake, 80, died Friday, June 27, 2008 in Carrington Place in Wytheville.
He was born in Smyth County on July 1, 1927 to the late Isaac and Nonnie Peake.
He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He was a member of Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church and was the owner of Modern Upholstery, from which he retired.
Survivors include his loving wife, Betty Peake; two sons, Tommy Lynn Peake of Wytheville and James Kenneth “Kenny” Peake II and wife, Rachel, of Atkins; four daughters, Sandra Sue Minnick and husband, Hal, of Atkins,  Janet Marie Sage and husband, Mike, of Atkins, Sherry Denise Thomas of Salem, and Beth Annette Gallagher and husband, Shawn, of Fife, Wash.; one brother, Charles Peake and wife, Nancy, of Hamstead, Md.; three sisters, Rebecca Mercer of Abingdon, Edna Eller of Mount Airy, N.C., Carol Sue Atwell and husband, Carl, of Marion; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, June 30, from Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Pastor Mike Sage officiating.
The family received friends Monday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home and a graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Saint Clair’s Bottom Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Slagle

Mamie Cleo Cornett Slagle, 91, of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at her home.
She was born in Grayson County on Sept. 21, 1916, the daughter of the late Ealie Cornett and Virginia CeDella Taylor Cornett.
She was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Club 55 Bowling League.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Garnett Slagle, and a son, Danny Kay Slagle.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Shirley Slagle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Archie Gleason Roberts and Phyllis and Richard Harden, all of Rural Retreat; six grandchildren, Melanie Mulgrew, Donna Roy, Danita Bryant, Lisa Hackler, Ricky Harden, and Johnny Harden; 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Lindsey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Rowland officiating.
A graveside committal service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home prior to the service or at the home of her daughter, Barbara Roberts, at any time.
Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be sent to Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.
