Coe

Irene P. Coe, 82, of Monroe, Ga., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008.
A native of Smyth County, she was the daughter of the late John E. Proffitt and Emma Holbrook Proffitt. A resident of Monroe since 1965, she was a retired LPN, having never missed a day’s work at the Walton County Hospital. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Monroe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Coe.
Survivors include her daughter, Anne C. Greer of Monroe, Ga.; a grandson and wife, Barry and Lori Greer of Monroe, Ga.; sisters, Mary Barrett of Monroe, Ga., Polly Arnold, Penny Hutchins and Billie (Garland) Holmes, all of Saltville; a great-grandchild, Bailey Greer; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Harmony Baptist Church. The Rev. Brant Callaway, Dr. W.C. Tribble and the Rev. Chris Conner officiated the services. Interment was held in Hill Haven Memory Gardens.
Arthur Bowick Inc., funeral directors in Monroe, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Ellison

Ezekiel “Seth” Ellison, 25, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, in Houston, Texas.
He was a lifelong resident of Tannersville.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Marjorie Ferley, his grandfather, Carlos Ferley, and his great-grandmother, Julia Ciccarello.
Seth was a graduate of Northwood High School and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Survivors include his mother, Kathleen Ellison of Houston, Texas; one brother, Daniel Deel of Haysi; a sister, Julie Boggs of Rome, Ga. He is also survived by an uncle, Carlos Ferley of Georgia; an aunt, Dora Frye of Bristol, Va.; and special cousins Jonathan Frye and Marsha Booher, an employee of the Bristol Herald Courier. He also leaves behind many friends and a very special friend, Adam French of Tannersville.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Saltville with the Rev. Benny Frye officiating.

Gillespie

Dorsey Lee Gillespie, 89, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in Midlothian.
He was born in Rich Valley on Sept. 10, 1918, to the late Henry H. and Cora Gillespie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Olive Hash Gillespie; two brothers, Willis Gillespie and Henry Gillespie; and two sisters, Louise Baldwin and Hazel Gillespie.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving his country during World War II and was a member of the Jacob J. Pearson V.F.W. Post # 637 in Hopewell. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat and had been employed at Hercules Inc. in Hopewell. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Gillespie and John Hanks; his sisters, Ella Oaks, Olivine Atwell, Ovella Perryman, Elsie King Cameron, Patsy Seip and Audrey Meadows; three grandchildren, Sarah Kathleen Hanks, Samuel Benjamin Hanks and fiancée, Melody Hiatt, and Joseph Paul Hanks; lifelong friends, sister-in-law, Eleanor “Jack” Gay, and brother-in-law, J.D. Baldwin, and wife, Pat; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, from the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Pastor Jonathan Hamman officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat with full military honors rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667.

Hurley

Bobby L. Hurley, 74, a resident of Damascus, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in the Valley Healthcare Center.
He was born in Washington County, son of the late Harvey C. Hurley and Martha Edmondson Hurley. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He attended Azen Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife,
Alma “Crickett” Hurley, and daughter, Angela K. Hurley.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Hurley of the home; three sons, Bobby
Hurley Jr. and wife, Gretchen, of Dallas, Georgia, Thomas Hurley and
wife, Rhonda, of Damascus, James Hurley and wife, Amanda, of
Lexington, Ky.; four stepchildren, Terry Dunn and husband, Gary, of Shady Valley, Tenn., Mary Colvin and Tuck Widener of Damascus, Phil Watson and wife, Joan, of Damascus, Janie Porter and husband, Johnny, of Trade, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Geneva Dixon of Marion, Betty Denny of Zionsville, N.C., Rachel Powers of Emory, Jackie Taylor of Green Cove; one aunt, Beatrice Barr of Shady Valley, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Azen Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Rex Carter officiating. Interment followed in the Green Cove Cemetery. 
The family received friends Wednesday evening at Azen Missionary Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Rogers Fire
Department and Rescue Squad.

McClure

Lucy Blevins McClure, 98, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
She was born in Grayson County to the late Arthur and Bartie Blevins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Horton W. Blevins, her second husband, George McClure, and a son, Denver Blevins.
She is survived by her daughter, Macel M. Mariott.
Several cousins also survive.

Pafford

Sadie Elizabeth Haulsee Pafford, 89, of Damascus died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, after a brief illness. 
She was born Jan. 2, 1919, to the late Curtis and Saffronia Watson Haulsee. She lived in the Attoway area of Smyth County until 11 years ago when she moved to her daughter’s home in Damascus following the death of her husband, Woodie S. Pafford. 
She was a faithful member of Falling Water Baptist Church where she served as the church pianist for more than 50 years.
Two brothers, Roger and Bill Haulsee, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughter, Nita Pafford Morton, and husband, David, of Damascus; her son, William S. Pafford, and wife, Diana, also of Damascus; her grandson, Andrew J. Pafford, of Blacksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at Seaver-Brown Funeral Home in Marion by Pastors John Davis and Jerry Creasy. Burial will be in Attoway Cemetery.
The family received friends Friday evening at Seaver-Brown Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may make memorial contributions to Damascus Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus, VA 24236.
