Adams
Barbara A. Price Adams, 68, died Friday morning, Aug. 1, 2008 at her home in Huntingtown, Md., after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on March 28, 1940 in Marion. She had been a long time resident of Dunkirk and Huntingtown, Md.
Survivors include her three children, David M. and Laura Price of Prince Frederick, Md., Teresa D. and Michael Jamison of Chesapeake Beach, Md., and J. Scott and Connie Price of Rockvale, Tenn.; a brother, James (Jim) Holman and wife, Nancy, of Marion; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Price, her parents, William E. (Bill) and Hazel S. Holman, three sisters, Mary Huffman, Katherine Greek and Lois Holman, and two brothers, Joseph E. and Robert E. Holman.
She was an active volunteer in the community, including the Calvert Pines Senior Center, On Our Own and the Calvert Food Bank to mention a few. She was also an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Huntingtown.
Memorial services were conducted at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. in Huntingtown, Md.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (Susan G. Komen for the Cure), 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250, Dallas, Texas 75244.

Finley
Frank Finley, 69, of Atkins died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
He was born Jan. 15, 1939 in Wilcox, W.Va., to the late Arley Jay and Ida Mae Mullins Finley.
Survivors include a daughter and spouse, Missy and Ringo Blansett of Front Royal; two sons and spouses, Cory and Tina Finley and Bo and Renee Finley, all of Manassas; two brothers, Lee Finley and Wallace Finley, both of Beckley, W.Va.; special friend and her children, Creola Sizemore of the home; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, in Helton Valley Baptist Church, Whitetop, with interment in Walls Cemetery, Whitetop, with the Rev. Rex Hall and Pastor Steve Hutton officiating.
The family received friends at the church Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of arrangements.
Lane
Jesse Clayton Lane, 82, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham, N.C.
He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army and also the U.S. Air Force. He served as assistant principal at Dan River High School in Danville. He retired from Kroger after 22 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Eller Lane of Roxboro, N.C.; one daughter, Rebecca Lane Baggett of Durham, N.C.; three sons, Arthur Keith Lane of Timberlake, N.C., Jesse Calvin Lane and Stephen Eller Lane and wife, Terry, all of Durham, N.C.; one sister, Lucy Lane Walls of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one brother, Clifton Lane of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren, David, Daniel, Jordan, Jeremy and Mary Elizabeth Lane, and Andrew and Jenna Baggett; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Monday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, with the Rev. Kenny Price officiating.
The family received friends Sunday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, Marion.

Phipps
Juanita Fay Phipps, 73, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Russell County on March 19, 1935 to the late John and Rose Marie White Hughes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Boothe, one grandson, Kenny Boothe, one granddaughter, Angel Bowman, one great-grandson, Bobby Ray Bowman and one stepson, James Harvey Phipps, two sisters, Ella Mae Clark and Georgia Lampkins, and one brother, John “Buddy” Hughes.
She was a loving homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Ben Phipps; four sons, Wayne and Donna Boothe of Salem, Ronnie and Mary Boothe and Larry and Debbie Boothe, all of Marion, and John and Tammy Boothe of Chilhowie; two daughters, Faye and Bobby Bowman of Saltville and Darlene “Dukie” and James Bowman of Saltville; one stepdaughter, Pauline Jackson of North Carolina; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Nancy and Bill Hodgens of Independence; one brother-in-law, Harold Phipps of Chilhowie; special friends, Helen and Jackie Reedy, Chad Teaster, and David Blevins; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Powers and the Rev. Michael Paul Hopkins officiating.
Interment followed in Burton’s Chapel Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roop
Wanda Elizabeth Roop, 73, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Ashe County, N.C., to the late Lee Jackson Howell and Amanda Carter Howell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Jackson Roop, her brothers and sisters, Ettie M. Howell, Brian Howell, Essie F. Jones, Roy Howell and Herbie Howell.
She was retired from Buster Brown after many years of service and was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Roop of Atkins, Karen Jones and husband, Donald Wayne Jones Sr. of Atkins, and Tessia Jones and husband, Bobby Jones of Atkins; her brothers and sisters, Chessie Blankenbeckler of Pennsylvania, Pauline Rowland of Florida, Retha Coleman of Virginia, and Frank Howell and Earl Howell, both of Pennsylvania; two grandsons and two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; two step-grandsons; two great-step-granddaughters; two great-step-grandsons; one great-great-step-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 12 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Rural Retreat with Pastor Steve Hutton officiating. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

Sage
Ford Sage, 78, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at his home in Marion.
He was a member of Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and loved to fish.
He retired from Southwestern State Hospital with more than 35 years of service.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, and a member of VFW Post 4667.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Sage.
Survivors include one sister, Ruby Johnson of Marion; two brothers, Jesse Sage and wife, Betty, of Marion, and Stanley Sage and wife, Helen, of Longwood, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, and special friends; and neighbors, Tom and Maxine Olinger and family.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Dan Jividen officiating.
The family received friends Sunday from 7 p.m. until the time of service.
Graveside services were conducted on Monday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, with military rites conducted by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.

Tolbert
Lois Jean Colley Tolbert, 59, died Sunday, Aug. 3, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Steve and Maggie P. Colley. She was a member of the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Dwight O. Tolbert; two sons, Mack O. Tolbert of Saltville and Brian P. Tolbert of Moneta; one daughter, Vanessa E. Tolbert of Saltville; several nieces; nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and host of other friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel in Saltville with the Rev. Richard Dickerson and the Rev. Jimmy Taylor Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home prior to the service.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Allison Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saltville Volunteer Fire Department.
