Armstrong
William “Bill” Edward Armstrong, 65, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 in Francis Marion Manor in Marion.
He was born in Smyth County on Oct. 30, 1942 to Wilma Call Armstrong and the late Rufus S. Armstrong.
He had retired from General Motors after many years of service.
Survivors include his loving wife, Wanda Armstrong; two sons, David Mark Armstrong of Chatham, Brian Lee Armstrong and wife, Robin, of Chilhowie; his mother, Wilma Call Armstrong of Atkins; five brothers, Ronald Lee Armstrong and wife, Pauline, of Taylor, Minn., Earl Stanley Armstrong and wife, Linda, of Marion, Wayne Armstrong of Rural Retreat, Patrick Henry Armstrong of Atkins, and Dennis Conley Armstrong of Atkins; four sisters, Peggy Haulsee and the late Elmer Haulsee of Rural Retreat, Ruth Ann Bebber and husband, Eugene, of Atkins, Judy Hall and husband, Buddy, of Rural Retreat, Polly Clark and husband, Albert, of Gaffney, S.C.; two grandchildren, Kevin and Jeremy Armstrong; special uncle, Sidney Cruey; special friends, Ray and Maxine Locklear of Pembrooke, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, from Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Pauley officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Slemp Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stoney Fork Community Church, 470 Gullion Fork Rd., Wytheville, VA 24382.

Brooks
Gary Ray Brooks, 64, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Francis Marion Manor.
He was born in Smyth County to the late Sam and Ruby Brooks and was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Eugene Brooks, and a sister, Barbara Jean Hall.
He was retired from Virginia Department of Corrections and was a charter member of the Adwolfe Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Rodney Powers of Marion; two grandchildren, Dillan Powers and Madison Powers; former wife and special friend, Doris Brooks of Marion; one nephew, Jay Hall of Marion; several cousins; and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating.
The family received friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hutton
Alice York Hutton, 91, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of the Matson Drive Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hutton, sons, Robert L., Roger G., and Donald L., four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Survivors include her daughter, Toni Bridgeman of Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Irvin L. Hutton and wife, Shirley, of Vinton, and Clarence D. Hutton and wife, Margaret, of Marion; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Chapman, the Rev. Kevin Welch, and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Round Hill Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Tilson
Ellen Hash Tilson, 77, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008 at Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was employed at Harwood Manufacturing Company for 48 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville A. Tilson, her father and mother, Albert and Ida Hash, and brothers, Lester and Ford Phillips.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Tilson of Marion; one granddaughter, Wendy M. Russell and fiancée, Denver L. Cregger of Silverthorne, Colo.; two sisters and one-brother-in-law, Treva M. and William Wood, and Hazel Carol Gilley, all of Marion; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Robert and Louise Hash, and Jake Hash, all of Marion.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Vanhoozer
Jacob Steven Vanhoozer, 57, of Chilhowie died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 following a brief illness.
Born May 11, 1951, he was the son of Vicie Mae Cornwell-Vanhoozer and the late Howard Franklin Vanhoozer.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane Vanhoozer and Virginia Mae Etter.
Survivors include his mother, Vicie Mae Cornwell-Vanhoozer of Chilhowie; sons, Robbie Vanhoozer of Chilhowie and Adam Vanhoozer of Chilhowie; brothers, Jim Vanhoozer and wife, Barbara, of Tazewell, Wayne Vanhoozer and wife, Cora, of Meadowview; sister, Ann Rich and husband, Kenny, of Chilhowie; brother-in-law, Pat Etter of Burkes Garden; ex-wife, Debbie Wilson of Chilhowie; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. from Bradley’s Funeral Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Mark Totten officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Thompson Valley.
The family received friends on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Chilhowie.
