Steve Brooks was accidentally killed today in a freak accident.He was very well liked by everyone. I have never met anyone like Steve. He lived life to the fullest and was always kind to everyone he came upon. He always spoke to you with a smile, even if he wasn’t feeling well. Baldwin
Dorothy Campbell Baldwin, 86, died March 27, 2008 at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg.
She was born in the Chatham Hill section of Smyth County to the late Harry E. and Emma S. Campbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman B. Baldwin; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ronald Stevens; and also by all her brothers and sisters.
Survivors include five grandchildren; great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, at Chatham Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating.

Colley
Denton T. Colley, 91, died March 26, 2008 at his home in Leander, Texas.
He was born and raised in Saltville. He was retired from the Air Force after 29 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Colley; his son, Denton Colley Jr.; three grandchildren; his parents, Tom and Georgia Colley; and three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by two daughters, Karen Colley and Linda Justin of Leander, Texas; one son, Marvin Colley, of Castlerock, Colo.; one brother, Wyndham Colley, of Pasadena, Md.; two sisters, Janie Allison and Eleanor and Lee Holmes, all of Saltville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 1, at 12 p.m. and burial at 2 p.m. in Denver, Colo.

Haley
Janet Dawn Haley, 64, died Friday, March 28, 2008 in Christiansburg.
She was born in Smyth County to the late Garland Howard Haga and Beulah Davis Taylor.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Harley Haga and Alan Powers; a son-in-law, Derrick McFarland; and one nephew, Donnie Sexton.
She was a certified nursing assistant and was employed at Southwestern State Hospital in Marion. She attended the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include three children, Cindy Farland, Angel Haley, and Alan Haley and wife, Carolyn Haley; three brothers, Wayne Haga and wife, Vera, Marvin Powers and wife, Peggy, Jeff Powers and wife, Jeanie; one sister, Becky Parks and husband, Danny; and five grandchildren, Jonny Servellon, Kaneisha McFarland, Alan Haley Jr., Kimberly Haley, and Brittany Haley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Pastor Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Davis Cemetery.
The family received friends on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carolyn McNeil Peterson, 58, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at her home in Marion.
Survivors include her husband, Bradley Peterson of Marion; three daughters and one son-in-law, Heather Brown and husband, Edward, of Speedwell, Desiree Davis and Michelle Davis, both of Marion; two sons, Rusty Fuller and Michael Davis, both of Marion; two sisters, Rachel Crouse of Chilhowie and Carla Cox of Atkins; seven grandchildren, Hunter Fuller, Forrest Fuller, Jonah Brown, Savannah Fuller, Janay Winebarger, Gage Barker, and Lexia Davis; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jason McNeese officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday afternoon from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Violet Leedy Russell, 83, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Roanoke United Methodist Home in Roanoke.

Umbarger
Billy Randolph Umbarger Sr., 74, of Chilhowie and formerly of Bastian, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Johnson City Tennessee Medical Center.
He was born April 28, 1933 at Sharon Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harlo and Evelyn Irene Layne Umbarger; his first wife, Bonnie Ann Cassell Umbarger; two brothers, Everett and Jack Umbarger; and one sister, Naomi Newberry.
He was a member of the Quarry United Methodist Church in Saltville and was a retired correctional officer from Bland Correctional Center with 25 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy H. Umbarger, of Chilhowie; one daughter and son-in-law, Deloras and C.D. Gregory, of Bastian; three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy (Randy) Jr. and Phyllis Umbarger of Bland, Tommy R. and Karen Umbarger of Bastian; and Gerald W. Umbarger, of Bastian; five grandchildren, James Allen Umbarger, Sarah Mae Wells, Christopher Mark Gregory, Bethany Leigh’an Gregory, and Jonathan Travis Umbarger; five great-grandchildren, Savanah Langley, Grace K. Umbarger, James Umbarger Jr., Emma Bradley Wells, and Marion Paige Wells; three sisters, Dorothy Wright of Bland; Hope Pennington of Dade City, Fla., and Lois Burdette of Germantown, Md.; two brothers-in-law, James G. Cassell of Deland, Fla., and Roger Burdette of Germantown, Md.; one stepson, Sammy R. McClure Jr. of Chilhowie; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh, the Rev. Alan Ashworth and the Rev. John Roe officiating. Burial followed at the Morning Star Cemetery in Bland.
The family received friends at the Bastian Union Church Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m.

I knew Steve as well and he was a very likable person with a smile ALWAYS!!! He will be missed by many and may God be with Steve & his family during this terrible loss.
