Marion Town Council issued a message Monday to area skaters, skateboarders and BMX bikers who have floated ideas for a community skate park: keep in touch.
Council member Jim Gates, who sits on the town’s recreation committee, acknowledged the event last week when American Ramp Co. set up some equipment on a Marion Automotive Group lot. The company’s selection of ramps, a quarter pipe and rails drew athletes on wheels from as far as Wytheville.
Gates said, however, that a group of people who earlier wanted the town to look into establishing a skate park have not been heard from again.
“We’re waiting for follow-up,” Gates said.
Council member Jane Hale said youth she knows told her they need to raise $10,000 to qualify for a $10,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation that supports the development of community skate parks.
Ken Heath said he had urged skaters to join forces rather than work independently and duplicate efforts. One group has been led by Glenda Richardson for two years, he said.
Richardson’s group is working toward securing 501(C)3 non-profit status that would allow them to apply for grants.
Heath asked that skaters keep up their interest and speak up.
“If anybody is interested, get in touch,” he said.
