Nine wrestlers from the Rural Retreat Wrestling Club competed in the Virginia Challenge Elementary and Middle School state tournament held Jan. 4-5 in the Hampton Coliseum.
Nearly 1,000 wrestlers from all across Virginia traveled to the tournament to compete with the best wrestlers in the state. This is a true state tournament in that Group AAA, Group AA and Group A and private schools all compete in one division.
Five wrestlers from Rural Retreat returned to Wythe County with a state medal. Placing second in the grade K-2 division was Walker Nowers. In the grade 3-5 division, Trey Boyd was third, Ty Boyd was third and Tanner Cox with eighth. Placing in the grade 6-8 division was Cooter Oda who finished sixth.
Also competing in the tournament was Jeremy Davidson, Tray Winbourne, Leighton Powell and Ryan Justice. Justice was in the grade 6-8 division, Davidson, Winbourne and Powell competed in the grade 3-5 division.
