Shane Peery of Shanaki Martial Arts Studios recently won his debut in full contact, mixed martial arts cage fight at “Ruckus in the Cage.”
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is also one of the most challenging and extreme.
MMA’s athletes compete as pugilists in no holds bared matches utilizing skills from a variety of combat arts. In an MMA bout, there are only three way to become the victor: (1) knock your opponent out; (2) force your opponent to submit (“tap out”) by applying any one of a variety of choke holds, bone snapping arm bars or joint locks; (3) or by referee stoppage (technical knockout).
Peery has been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (submission grappling), karate, muay Thai, and kick-boxing at Shanaki for about a year. “Shane is a scrapper at heart,” said trainer Scott Shannon. “He’s not only a gifted athlete, but he’s also a quick study who immediately puts what he learns into practical application.”
Perry squared off in the cage against Josh Steele, a strong grappler and striker from the Abingdon/Bristol area. The first round started with a furious exchange of punches until Steele attempted to close the distance. Perry successfully defended the takedown by locking up into a standing clinch position and began firing off a number of explosive knee strikes to the body along with an onslaught of hooks and uppercuts to Steele’s head.
As Steele once again tried for the takedown, Peery quickly applied a standing guillotine choke and muscled Steele to the side of the cage where he delivered more punishing knees. Sensing an opportunity, Peery attempted to take Steele to the ground to finish the submission, but Steele was able to roll out and gain top position.
This is where Steele is supposed to be at his strongest, yet Peery completely shut down the ground attack. In his frustration, Steele tried to stand up, hoping to rain down punches. Instead, he was met with several of Perry’s up-kicks to the face at the end of the round.
The second round began much like the first with another flurry of punches. Just as Steele stepped closer into range, Peery again sunk a deep guillotine choke. This time he was also able to pull Peery into his guard (a controlling ground position). As Peery wrenched the choke in tighter and tighter, Steele’s face began to turn shades of purple from the lack of blood and oxygen.
The crowd thought this would surely be the end of the fight, but somehow Steele managed to escape. The fight came back up to the standing position. Both fighters were able to land some good shot. However, Peery began measuring up his opponent with a couple of stiff jabs to the chin followed by hard right crosses and brutal Thai kicks to Steele’s left thigh.
Peery kept stalking Steele and fired away with knees, leg kicks and punches. As round two concluded, the constant pressure and punishment proved to be too much. Steele couldn’t continue and his corner threw in the towel. Peery won by a TKO.
After the match, both competitors showed great class and sportsmanship by congratulating one another on an excellent fight.
