Larry Dallas Ball
Larry Dallas Ball, 56, of Raven, died Sept. 3.
Born Oct. 19, 1950 in Doran, he was the son of the late Dahmon Andrew and Marcella Hunt Ball.
He was a lifelong resident of the Raven area. He was an employee of Pittston and was retired from Alpha Natural Resources. He was a member of UMWA. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and ginseng hunt. He will be missed by all who knew him. 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Jean Welch Ball; and his second wife, Rita Harman Ball.
Survivors: daughters, Angie Haines and husband, Edward, of Montclair, NJ, Tabitha Ball of Richlands; son, Larry Andrew Ball of the home; brothers, Wayne Ball and Dahmon (Ikey) Ball and wife, Tilda, all of Raven, Dennis (Dink) Ball and wife, Pat, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Kathy Davis and husband, James, of Swords Creek, Beth Taylor and husband, Eddie, of Belington, WV, Shelia Joyce of Raven; grandchildren, Edward Dahmon Haines and Thea Haines, both of Montclair; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Dennis White officiating.

Norma Jean Blankenship
Norma Jean Blankenship, 55, of Oakwood, died Sept. 1.
Born March 4, 1952, she was the daughter of Eugene Hughes of Whitewood and the late Nora Ellen Cook Hughes.
She worked as a custodian for several years at Eagle Hawk Carbon and Dr. J. P. Sutherland, Jr. 
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Dean Hughes. 
Additional survivors: husband of 38 years, Cecil Wilson Blankenship; daughter, Melinda Sue Blankenship Martin and husband, Eric Alan, of Strange Creek, WV; grandchildren, Tiffany Erica and Derek Alan Martin; brothers, Jerry Wayne Hughes and wife, Dale, of Pilgrims Knob, David Lee Hughes and Abraham Hughes, both of Richlands, Michael Darrell Hughes and wife, Lisa, of Whitewood; sisters, Brenda Kay Harrison and husband, Larry, of Lebanon, Lillian Sue Yates of South Carolina, Angel Keen and husband, Terry, of Jewell Ridge; special friend and sister, Brenda Blankenship of Oakwood; and several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Terry Keen and Rev. Bobby Horn officiating.
Burial followed in the Blankenship Cemetery at Page.

Henry Eugene Crawford
Henry Eugene Crawford, 68, of Wardell, quietly slipped away into the arms of the angels to go to be with his Lord Sept. 3 in the Veterans Hospital at Salem.
Born Feb. 27, 1939 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Charles Harold and Tina Hess Crawford.
He was a member of the Chapel of Love Church. He served in the United States Army and was a disabled veteran. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was also a member of the American Legion Post 164 in Grundy. He was a master mason in Masonic Lodge AF & AM #260 in Cedar Bluff. He was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Joann Crawford; and one brother, Charles Crawford.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 45 years, Wortha Crawford; sons, Henry, Jr. and wife, Melissa, of Gloucester, Todd and wife, Edwina, of Richlands, Chris and wife, Amy, of Salem; grandsons, Brett and Josh Crawford of Gloucester; granddaughters, Hannah and Emma Crawford of Richlands; brother, Pete and wife, Mitzi, of Wardell; and sisters, Maxine Dotson of Wardell, Glenda Stiltner and husband, Robert, of Paintlick, Norma Looney and husband, Bobby, of Vansant, Shelia Null and husband, Larry, of Cleveland, and Lelia Sturgeon and husband, Willard, of Vansant. 
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Roger Lester officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.
Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge AF & AM #260 conducted Masonic rites Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sallie Mae Gilliam
Sallie Mae Gilliam, 98, died at Heritage Hall Healthcare, Big Stone Gap, Aug. 24.
She lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Big Stone Gap.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Woodson Gilliam.
Survivors: sons, Harold Gilliam and wife, Joneva, of Bristol, VA, Robert “Bud” Gilliam and wife, Jane, Fred Gilliam and wife, Jean, Carl Gilliam and wife, Janet, and Garnett Gilliam and wife, Carolyn, all of Big Stone Gap; sisters, Beachie Kidd and Aileene Hagar, both of Bluefield, WV; sister-in-law, Connie Bourne, of Bluefield, WV; grandchildren, Jerry Gilliam, Brenda Grubb, Freddy Gilliam, Rick Gilliam, Roger Gilliam, Brian Gilliam, Hope Collins, Leslie Gilliam, and Beth Gilliam; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Big Stone Gap, with Rev. M.C. Tolbert officiating and Pastor Greg Townsend and Pastor Garrett Lee assisting.
Graveside services were held Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap.

Samantha Jean
Sargent Hackney
Samantha Jean Sargent Hackney, 40, of Big Rock, died Sept. 8 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, from injuries sustained in a four wheeler accident in Tazewell.
Born May 22, 1967 in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Bobby Eugene Sargent and Iva Carl Honaker Sargent.
She was a homemaker, animal lover, a loving wife, mother, and sister.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, David Sargent.
Survivors: loving husband of 3 years, Gregory Lee Hackney of Big Rock; daughters, Amanda Rose and husband, Rodney, Christi Hunter and husband, Jessie, all of Floyd County, KY; son, Travis Sargent of Pikeville, KY; step daughters, Brianna Hackney of Grundy, Alonda Slone of Bradshaw, WV, Victory McKerry of Prater; sisters, Terri Matney of Tazewell, Tammy Waddell of Washington, DC; brothers, Gary Sargent and Robert Sargent, both of Tazewell, Doug Sargent of Saltville; grandchildren, Emily Hunter, Jacob Rose, and Skylar Rose; and a special canine friend, Chopper.
The funeral will be conducted Sept. 13 at the Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Stacy and Rev. Dean Powers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Buckeye family cemetery at Big Rock.
Evening services will be held at the church Sept. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m.

Duane Edward Harris
Duane Edward Harris, 40, of Bristol, VA, formerly of Oakwood, died Sept. 7 in Florida.
Born June 11, 1967 in Richlands, he was the son of Sam and Barbara Van Dyke Harris of Bristol, VA.
He lived most of his life in the Oakwood area. 
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Earnest and Maggie Harris. 
Additional survivors: wife, Karen Harris and his children, Chloe and Duane II, all of Bristol; grandparents, Bill and Verdie Van Dyke of Oakwood; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating.
Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Corbin Robert “Toby” Hawkins
Corbin Robert “Toby” Hawkins, 53, of the Mudfork community in Tazewell County, died Sept. 3 at his home.
Born March 1, 1954 in Germany, he was a son of Elsie DeQuino and stepson of Robert S. DeQuino of Bartley, WV and son of the late Corbin David Hawkins.
He was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Franz and Elsa Hild, and paternal grandparents, Fred and Rosie Wilson.
Additional survivors: wife and best friend, Wanda Bowman Hawkins; sons, Toby Edward Hawkins of the home, James Stallard and wife, Stacy, of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Hawkins and wife, Jessica, of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Kaden Hawkins, Phillip James Stallard, Randy Stallard, and Shaylee Stallard; and special friends, Randy Boardwine of Berwind, WV, and Jimmy Cooper and wife, Lisa, of Tazewell.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Pete Woods officiating.
Burial was private.
Edith “Cookie” Hess
Edith L. “Cookie” Hess, 63, of Galion, OH, died unexpectedly Aug. 30 at Galion Community Hospital.
Born Apr. 16, 1944 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Lee H. Ray and Virgie E. (Blankenship) Ray.
She married Glen Allen Hess on May 5, 1974 and he survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bucyrus Church of God, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 21 in Mansfield, Crestline V.F.W. Post 2920 Auxiliary and Rolling Thunder in Mt. Gilead.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Cecil Ray, and two sisters, Jean Jackson and Bonnie Hill.
Survivors: daughter, Rebecca Schwall of Mansfield and her fiancé, Kurtis Wagers; granddaughter, Isabella Paige Schwall; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eva and Raymond Houchins of Wythfield, Janice and Earl Richardson of Indianapolis and Georgie, Arnold Shepard of Cedar Bluff; and brothers and sister-in-law, Rufus and Naomi Ray of Richlands and Bill Ray of Rosedale.
The funeral was held Sept. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion with Rev. Greg Griffith of the Willard Church of God officiating.
Burial followed at Mansfield Memorial Park.

Howard Robert Honaker
Howard Robert Honaker, 89, of Mount Rainier, MD, formerly of Honaker, died Aug. 30 in Mount Rainier.
Born May 11, 1918 in Virginia, he was a son of the late Jim and Sally Honaker. He was a retired van helper of Burnham Service Corporation where he was employed for 15 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: his good friends, Armeldia Marshall and Buddy and Chrysta Marshall, all of Mount Rainier, Robert and Beth Marshall of Hancock, MD, Anita and Todd Johnson of Nanjamoy, MD; special friends, Peggy Taylor, Linda and Lanny Hamm and Connie and Wayne Kiser, all of Honaker, Joe and Louise Howard of Mount Airy, MD, Betty and Sidney Boozer of Gray, TN, Sonny and Judy Marshall of Hyattsville, MD, Jim Combs of Kingsport, TN, Bryant and Jeannie of Boonsboro, TN; and six grandchildren, Christopher, Kaitlin, Todd, Jr., Lindsay, Andy and Brian.
The funeral was conducted at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Taylor officiating.
Interment followed in the Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon.

Hubert Roy Johnson
Hubert Roy Johnson, 83, of Raven, died Sept. 7 in a Richlands hospital following an extended illness.
Born at Raven, he was the son of the late John Wesley Johnson and Mandy Alice Davis Johnson.
He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army WW II Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raleigh Johnson, and two sisters, Loraine Wingo and Lill Tolliver. 
Survivors: wife, Margaret Rimmer Johnson; sons, Danny Joe Johnson and wife, Beckie, of Blue Ridge, John Hubert Johnson of Honaker, Michael Anthony Johnson of Short Gap, Mark Johnson and wife, Beth, of Pounding Mill; brother, Perry Johnson of Pounding Mill; sisters, Peggy Plaster and husband, Jerry, of Raven, Ruth Shortt and husband, Bernard, of Short Gap; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Claudie Throgmartin officiating.
Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the Casey-Short V.F.W. Post 9640.

Lonnie Willard O’Quinn
Lonnie Willard O’Quinn, 69, of Richlands, died Sept. 6 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1937 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Johnnie Willard and Rausie Sullivan O’Quinn.
He was a United States Navy Veteran. He attended Greens Chapel Church at Paintlick. 
Survivors: wife of 30 years, Ann O’Quinn; son, John O’Quinn and wife, Lori, of Chicago, IL; daughters, Darlene Rade and husband, Ed, of Flossmoor, IL, Tina Harmon and husband, Jerry, of Rockford, IL; brothers, Lester O’Quinn and wife, Jeanette, of Green Valley, WV, Leonard (Nick) O’Quinn, Johnny O’Quinn and wife, Mary Cathern, and Emmett O’Quinn, all of Cliffield, Ledford (Lefty) O’Quinn of Belfast, Rev. Leon O’Quinn and wife, Nancy, of North Tazewell; sister, Rose Ellen Harris and husband, Ezra, of Belfast; grandchildren, Dylan O’Quinn, Sean O’Quinn, Joseph Rade, Jeffrey Rade, Azalea Harmon and Acacia Harmon; great grandson, Payton Rade; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and early morning coffee friends.

Clara Mae Reedy
Clara Mae Taylor Reedy, 84, of Swords Creek, died Sept. 1 in an Abingdon hospital.
Born Sept. 12, 1922 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Kate Hale Taylor.
She had spent most of her life in the Swords Creek area and was a graduate of Honaker High School. She had formerly been employed as a cake decorator at the Piggly Wiggly in Richlands and was of the Baptist faith. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Reedy; one step-son, Bob Richardson; one brother, Homer Taylor; and two sisters, Love Breedlove and Louise Dye.
Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Lowell “Red” and Elizabeth Reedy of Cheraw, SC, Robert “Bo” and Carolyn Reedy of Abingdon; sister, Betty Dye of Chicago, IL; brother, Claude Taylor of Claypool Hill; special caregivers, Gail Hill and Mary Griffith; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Paul Mays officiating.
Graveside services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 4 at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill.

Robert James Reynolds
Robert James Reynolds, 82, of Bristol, TN, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sept. 4 at the Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville, TN, following an extended illness.
Born in Pike County, KY, he was the son of the late Noah and Margaret Lester Reynolds.
He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life prior to moving to Bristol, TN, and was of the Baptist Faith. He served in the United States Army during World War II where he served as a medical Aidman. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was a disabled Coal Miner.
He was preceded in death by one son, Carrol Jay Reynolds, two sisters and one brother.
Survivors: wife of 51-years, Anis Jean Justice Reynolds; daughters, Margaret Jean and husband, Johnnie Bentley, of Rocky Mount, NC, Bessie Roberta and husband, Darin Winebarger, of Bristol, TN, Linda Juanita and husband, Gary Owens, of Richlands; sons, Kenth Ray and wife, Connie Reynolds, of Rochester, IN, Darrell Russell and wife, Lynn Reynolds, of Tippecanoe, IN, Ernie Lee Lester of Jarratt; sister, Georgia Marie Richie of Santa Fe, TX; brother, Isaac Henry Reynolds of Burgaw, NC; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Bufford Stacy and Elzie Mullins officiating.
Burial followed in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by Members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.

Verda Mae Reynolds
Verda Mae Reynolds, 71, of Richlands, died Sept. 5 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Oct. 26, 1935 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Dan F. and Stella McGlothlin Proffitt.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Eugene Arnold; one son, Raymond David Arnold; two brothers, Eugene Proffitt and Dallas Proffitt; one sister, Jeanette Proffitt Keen; and one granddaughter, Sheri Cox Combs.     
Survivors: husband, Rev. Claude Reynolds; sons, Danny A. Arnold and wife, Stephanie, and Ricky R. Arnold, all of Roanoke, James Reynolds of Cedar Bluff; daughters, Margaret Reynolds of Rosedale, Louise Messick and husband, Joe, of Goldsboro, NC; sister, Inis Pruitt of Red Root Ridge; brothers, Raymond Proffitt and wife, Velvie, of Willis, Thomas Proffitt of Troutville; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Clyde Rose and Nancy Keen officiating.

Wilma Endicott Settle
Wilma Endicott Settle, 55, of Pounding Mill, died Sept. 1 at her home.
Born May 3, 1952 in Grundy, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Eunice Francis Horn Endicott.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Earl and Billy Ray Endicott.
Survivors: husband of 31 years, James Vernon Settle; son, James E. Settle of Pounding Mill; sisters, Kassie Elswick and husband, Randy, of Paintlick, Judy Zvonar and husband, Greg, of Boston, MA, Betty Burress and husband, Allen, of Claypool Hill; brother, Jerry Endicott of Richlands; nephews, Eric Tiller and David Elswick; and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Pastor Richard Smith and Pastor Bill Shook officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Kevin Jack Stallard, II
Kevin Jack Stallard, II, 14, of Baptist Valley, died Sept. 6 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Abingdon, he was the son of Kevin Jack and Patricia Cordill Stallard of Baptist Valley.
He was a member of the freshman class at Richlands High School and was an honor student having perfect attendance and a 4.0GPA. He loved to deer hunt, ride four wheelers, and raise goats. He was a former participant in the Richlands Little League Football and Baseball programs. He was a member of the Baptist Valley Assembly of God Church in Baptist Valley.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Marvin Cordill, and his paternal grandfather, Roger Stallard.
Additional survivors: brother, Cody R. Stallard of the home; maternal grandmother, Thelma Cordill of Baptist Valley; paternal grandmother, Jackie Stallard of Claypool Hill; and several aunts, uncles and cousins as well as a host of friends and classmates.
The funeral was conducted Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Baptist Valley Assembly of God Church in Baptist Valley with the Rev. Casey Rose and Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Entombment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Beatrice E. Hunt Stilwell
Beatrice E. Hunt Stilwell, 90, of San Clemente, CA, formerly of the Witten Valley area in Tazewell, died Sept. 5 at San Clemente.
Born Dec. 23, 1916 in War, WV, she was a daughter of the late James Robert and Hattie Hunt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Stilwell.
Survivors: son, Michael Stilwell and wife, Leslie, of San Clemente; granddaughter, Gretchen Stilwell of San Clemente; and sister, Betty Showalter of Fayetteville, NC.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Sept. 10 at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Leon Yost officiating.

Ernest David Totten, Jr.
Ernest David Totten, Jr., 54, of Summerville, SC, formerly of the Springville area of North Tazewell, died Sept. 3 at his home.
Born June 9, 1953 in Tazewell, he was a son of Gracie Bentley Totten of Springville and the late Ernest David Totten, Sr.
He attended Sonrise Christian Church in Summerville. He was a United States Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and a former truck driver. He had a heart of gold and was loved by everyone who knew him and will be missed by everyone. He was the heart of our family and until we are all together again, we have an empty spot in our lives without David.
Additional survivors: loving and caring wife of 25 years, Barbara Colgate Totten; son, Jonathan David Totten of Summerville, who shared his love of drawing and music; daughter, Sonja Beth Totten of Summerville, who will always be “Daddy’s Girl”; brother, Donnie Totten and wife, Mary, of Springville; sister, Kathy Evans and husband, Morris, of Chilhowie; father-in-law and mother-in-law; Ohmar and Tessie Colgate of Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews; and other extended family.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Betty J. Powers Wallace
Betty J. Powers Wallace, 74, of Barren Springs, formerly of Tazewell, died Sept. 3 at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem, following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 25, 1933, in Wise County, she was the daughter of the late Joe E. and Ollie Johnson Powers, both former Coeburn natives.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adolphus “Buddy” Wallace.
Survivors: daughters, Nyoka Black and husband, Arvil, of China Grove, NC, Connie Keene and husband, Terry, of Barren Springs, Vickie Pearson and husband, Grover, of Stanley, NC, Diana Keene and husband, Eugene, of Hillsville; son, Franklin Wallace and wife, Melissa, of Tazewell; sister, Dorothy Jewell of Corbin, KY; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Sept. 5 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Evangelist Jesse Estep officiating.
Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
