Richlands golfers place at district meet

The Southwest District golf tournament held at the Holston Hills Country Club on Monday, September 29 pretty much followed the same pattern as the regular season as Abingdon added the tournament title to its regular season trophy with a seven-stroke win over second place Graham, a team which normally finished second to the Falcons in regulr season play with the exception of one match, which the G-Men won.
Both Abingdon and Graham advanced to the Region IV tournament, which was scheduled for Monday, October 6 at the Fincastle Country Club.
Six individual golfers also advanced, including three from Richlands. The Blues finished in fifth place as a team in the SWD tournament and will send Nathan Ashworth, Eric Mulkey and Brandon White to the Region IV Tourney.
“I’m pretty pleased with that,” said RHS head golf coach Matt Dixon. “I would have liked to have gotten in as a team, but we’re pretty pleased.”
The Richlands trio will be playing the Region IV tournament on familiar ground as they took part in several regular season matches at the Fincastle Country Club. “We’ve played there, but I’ll tell you, we play in the toughest region in the state of Virginia so it is going to be a challenge for us,” said Dixon. “I know the kids I’m taking are real excited and I know the Richlands community will be real excited for them to go.”
Other individuals to advance to the Region IV tournament were Marion’s Branson Bowman and Gavin Roe and Carroll County’s Erick Cox. Mulkey and White were both named to the All-Southwest District Team, which was announced after the district tournament concluded. Abingdon’s Jordan Patrick, with a low round of 76 was the tournament medalist.
