Twenty-eight teams will be participating in the 2007 Relay for Life Friday and Saturday at Floyd County High School, and participants span the generations at the American Cancer Society event.
Susan Nunn, chairman of the Relay, told the Press she was “overwhelmed with the energy” around the Relay this year. Nunn said people are always willing to help. “We’ve never had anyone say ‘no’ to anything we’ve asked (of them).” This year, Nunn said, “We’ve got a stage for the first time for the musicians.”
The activities will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and continue to 6 the next morning.
Survivors will take their lap at 6 Friday evening. Vernon Harris from Woolwine will sing his original Survivors’ Song. Harris is a three-time cancer survivor.
The luminary ceremony will begin around 9:30 that night, Nunn said. Pastor Marvin Wade from Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren will conduct that ceremony.
The Relay will also have lighter moments, too. Zachary Burchette, the 2006 Miss Relay for Life, will crown his successor. The 2007 pageant, which is limited to males, will begin at 7:30 Friday night.
Entertainment will be provided by several musicians, including Tara Wright and Tammy Ling and Family (at 5), Josh Morgan (at 5:30), The Comptons (at 6), The Statement (at 7), Mountain Fever (at 8), and Redeemed (at 10).
Greg Clabaugh will serve as emcee for the evening. Brenda Allen is co-chairman of the Relay.
There is no admission fee. Nunn said there is a rain plan in place.
All ages are welcome. Children have their own lap. The Relay is also open to spectators, and Nunn extends a special invitation to all to attend
