Brandon Umberger and Kenny Peeples Jr., both of Rural Retreat, have been dominant this season in the Exit 54 Exxon Late Models Division at Wythe Raceway.
But as of late Umberger has been getting the advantage on the track and now in the points standings and Saturday night was no different on the high banked half mile dirt super speedway, as he took the win and Peeples finished second.
Umberger scored his third win of the season and extended his point lead to 27 points over Peeples, who has five wins this season. Clinton Cook of Radford tied his career best finish of third with Jason Lawrence of Pilot fourth and Jonesborough, Tenn., driver Jerry Broyles claimed fifth. Randy Kinder of Radford, Phil Gann of Mayodan, N.C., Ron Thomas of Rock Hill, S.C., and the Agee brothers, Trevor and Scott rounded out the top ten finishers. Jeffrey Earnhardt of Kannapolis, N.C., made his second start of the season finishing a disappointing 13th.
Brian Coake of Max Meadows claimed the win in the England Automotive Super Street division backing up last Saturday night’s victory. Coake outdueled Teddy Tate of Rural Retreat and Jimmy Tate of Wytheville to the finish with Keith Griffits of Sugar Grove and Mike Keith of Rural Retreat rounding out the top five finishers. Completing the top 10 was; Brian Hayes of Troutdale, Michael Hedrick of Wytheville, Mike Hurley of Rural Retreat, Michael Deskins of Tazewell and Steven Quillen of Marion.
Duke Bare of Meadowview took another victory in the Open Wheel Modifieds over Ron Lawson of Austinville, RK Dix of Rural Retreat, Troy Loomis of Sherrills Ford, N.C., and Roby Orr of Glade Spring. Willie Gibson of Abingdon, Gator Cornett of Sugar Grove, Taylor Hayes and Mike Johnson both of Marion and Fred Riley of Rural Retreat completed the top 10 finishers.
The City Cab of Marion Pro-Mini’s had another strong field of cars with 28 cars taking the green flag and it was Max Meadows driver Doug Monday who took his chariot to victory lane over Everett Cox of Austinville, Luke Golding of Mount Airy, Duke Bare of Meadowview and Jason Powers of Marion.
Completing the top 10 for the City Cab of Marion Pro-Mini’s was Danny Bland of Glade Spring, Andy Jollife of Chilhowie, Gator Cornett of Sugar Grove, Brandon Farris of Marion and Zach Eaton of Max Meadows.
The Hornet Division saw Trevor Cregger of Christiansburg claim another victory followed to the line by Cole Dutton of Chilhowie, Pie Short of Abingdon, Michelle McMahan of Marion and Jay Cox of Rural Retreat. Cedar Bluff driver Matthew Perricllia finished sixth followed by Dakota Wilson, Cody Umberger and Clark Cooper, all of Rural Retreat.
Kevin Gentry of Chilhowie took the U-Car victory over Josh Forest of Mount Airy, N.C., Cole Dutton of Chilhowie, Leon McMahan of Marion and Travis Lefler of Rural Retreat. Donald Wilson of Rural Retreat, Rob Favre of Willis and Jake Eaton of Bland completed the field.
Racing continues this Saturday night with Kids Bike Races plus racing in the following divisions: Exit 54 Exxon Late Models, England Automotive Super Street, City Cab of Marion Pro-Mini’s, Open Wheel Modifieds, Hornets and U-Cars.
Wythe Raceway will also be back in action on Monday night, July 16, when the Ray Cook’s Southern National Series Super Late Models roll into town for the first of 10 races in the Summer Series.
