Staff reports
The sound of sirens echoing through North Fork River Road in Washington County signaled the end of a three-day manhunt.
Four people were captured, three of whom were arrested in connection with the shooting of a Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office deputy around 8:30 Sunday morning off U.S. Highway 19. Additional charges in regards to two armed robberies in Tazewell County are pending.
Wallace S. Kinder, Jr., 34, of Cedar Bluff was charged with attempted capital murder. Additional charges in regards to the armed robberies are pending.
Scottie Lee Stinson, 27, of Bandy was charged with attempted capital murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Roxie Amanda Short, 24, of Bishop was charged with attempted capital murder.
Tracy Stinson Coxton, 32, of Tazewell is being held on a probation violation from Tazewell County. Additional charges are pending.
Stinson and Kinder are being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.
Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy R.F. Cruise Jr. was working radar along U.S. Highway 19 around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday when he noticed a pickup matching the description of one wanted in connection with two robberies and a Friday morning shooting of a Tazewell County deputy, according to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The 1986 Ford F150 was traveling northbound on the highway. When he attempted to stop the truck, the driver turned onto North Fork River Road.
Nearby residents said about 15 police cars converged in the area after having chased the pickup from the highway. Emergency crews were also on the scene, according to residents.
The vehicle traveled about a mile down North Fork River Road before turning left into a driveway where all four occupants of the vehicle were removed.
The manhunt began early Friday morning when a Claypool Hill convenience store was robbed. Less than an hour later, police were alerted that a store in Richlands had also been robbed. Authorities believed that the robbers fled in a white Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle.
Richlands Police Chief William Puckett said his officers thought the robbers had headed toward Jewell Ridge when the shooting took place near Graham Middle School. Bluefield Police Chief Harry Cundiff said a white Mitsubishi was stopped near the school at 6:47 a.m. Cundiff said Patrolman Josh Wright of his department was assisting Deputy Eric Mullins, who had stopped the vehicle. Wright, who was approaching on the passenger side, heard a pop and fired.
Mullins had been shot twice, he said, when the driver pointed a gun out the window.
One bullet was stopped by a bullet-proof vest and the other struck Mullins’; hand. The SUV fled the scene and another Bluefield officer pursued it to the West Virginia line before losing track of it. Mullins was taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released with minor injuries.
He later identified the shooter as Scottie Stinson of Tazewell County.
Later that day, Virginia State Police obtained warrants for Stinson and Short for attempted capital murder of a police officer. The next day, Virginia State Police said a third person, Kinder, was facing an attempted capital murder of a police officer.
Stinson is the stepson of the owner of the white Mitsubishi, according to Tazewell County Sheriff H.S. Caudill. The owner of the vehicle called, Caudill said, after hearing its description and tag number broadcast. The sheriff said the owner told officers he let his stepson start driving the sport utility vehicle about a month ago.
Bluefield, Va., police located the SUV around 9:40 a.m. on Friday near a Subway restaurant in back of a shopping center at the corner of College Avenue and Leatherwood Plaza. Law enforcement officers searched the area around the shopping center, locking down several schools, including Bluefield College, in the process. Helicopters and canine units joined the search, but to no avail.
At that time, police said the trio could be driving a pickup and might be in North Carolina.
Richlands Police Officer Gary Childress, who was injured in an automobile accident en route to assist in the search, is in stable condition. Puckett said.
It’s sad that this is the first we have heard about this in this newspaper. It’s also sad that the rash of robberies that went from Fort Chiswell Flying J to the Kangroo station in Wytheville have NOT been reported, pictures of those robbers taken at GO-MART have NOT been printed, that the robbery at the cash n go next to Housemans is NOT in this edition, even though our schools were locked down. BUT GOD FORBID WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT HUFF’S SELLING OVERPRICED GOLFCARTS!!!! What a sorry rinky dink newspaper!!!
YOU KNOW IT’S REALLY SAD WHEN ALL YOU HEAR IS DIFFERENT STUFF WHY DON’T YOU ALL GET THE TRUTH OUT QUIT ASSUMING, AND GUESSING, IT’S OBVIOUS YOU PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THE FACTS YET SO WHY PRINT A BUNCH OF GARBAGE,I HAVE KNOWN WALLY FOR A LIFE TIME I THINK YOU BETTER GET THE GUY THAT REALLY DID IT THE ONE THAT RAN AND THE ONE THAT REALLY SHOT THE COP, WALLY WOULD’NT HURT NO ONE HE LOVED EVERYONE.HE WAS JUST AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME WITH PEOPLE HE SHOUD’NT NEVER BEEN AROUND,PLEASE GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT AND GET TO THE ONE’S THAT ARE REALLY INVOLVED IN THIS MESS THIS JUSTICE SYSTEM REALLY NEEDS HELP….THIS IS REALLY SAD…
I dont know where some people get off calling a newspaper “rinky dink” just because some news gets reported and other news doesn’t. Did you ever stop and think that the reason that some news isn’t reported is because of the lack of information that some Wythe county people are willing to give up. So please, forgiving me for being the to tell The Wytheville Enterpise your sorry for your rude comment and calling them “rinky dink”. They are a hard working staff and I would like to say thanks for all your hard work. Keep it up.

wally we love you
I’m not sorry for this being a rinky dink newspaper, they should report the news. The string of robberies from Fort Chiswell to Wytheville need to be reported. Maybe it’s not the paper, maybe it’s our “outstanding” officers that are witholding information. I don’t know why the cops would withold the photos of the robbers…unless they DON’T want to catch them. I personally would rather read about news and events that affect us and our county…not electric golf carts. If someone from Woodlawn can’t handle that then I don’t care…go buy a golf cart.
Lets think about “rinky dink” for a minute. I applaud the paper for printing news that it had enough information on to call it a story. So many papers are littered with comments like “officials speculate”, or “according to a unnamed source”, that its refreshing to just pick up the paper and read the “news” in its entirety…not just some glorified rendition of the news. And even if its not what you want to hear…facts are based on actual testimony from people who were there…so maybe the account is true, maybe its shaded by adrenaline…but its an eyewitness account. So it is what it is. Facts are facts until someone disputes them. As for Huff selling overpriced golf carts…maybe thats not “news”...unless youre in the market for a golf cart. Thank you Enterprise…for printing the news.
The theft at Go-Mart was reported twice, as was the attempted thefts at the other stations. I know, because I posted saying that it shouldn’t be referred to as a robbery, because no weapon or threat of violence was involved. Here are the two stories:

I’m sure the newspaper would love to post pictures - that drums up demand for the paper. The pictures probably weren’t available at the time the story was published (assuming they were ever made available by law enforcement).
Regarding this story, the newspaper didn’t arrest these individuals, the Washington County Sheriff’s department did. So I’m not sure why people are coming here to bash the newspaper simply because they reported on the information released by law enforcement. If some of these people are indeed innocent, then isn’t it a good thing that the newspaper reported on their arrests, instead of them being in jail and no-one even knowing about it? What if someone reads this story, and remembers seeing one of these people somewhere else when the robberies occurred, and can thus provide them with an alibi?
For “shelley”, who hadn’t heard about this before, this is at least the third story about the shooting and robberies I’ve seen on this website,
YOU KNOW IM NOT SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT THE PAPER. ALL IM SAYING IS YOU HAVE HIM GUILTY AND HE HASNT BEEN TRIED YET .ITS REALLY HARD TO EVEN THINK WALLY HAD ANY THING TI DI WITH THIS ,AND I DONT THINK YOU ARE GIVIMG HIM A FAIR SHAKE. HIS FAMILY IS GOING THROUGH ALOT RIGHT NOW JUST GIVE THEM A BREAKE,WHAT IF IT WAS ONE OF YOR FAMILY MEMBERS.
TO WALLYS FAMILY AND FRIENDS KEEP YOUR FAITH UP AND TRUST IN WALLY
