Philip Jones wins at ECD

The main attraction at Elk Creek Dragway last Friday night was the Chevy vs. the World event in which all of the Chevy lovers in the area had been anxiously awaiting.
In the final round, it was a Pontiac with a 10:73 ET at 62 mph that took home the win. The driver was Philip Jones of Wytheville. The runner-up was Jim Bo Sells of Troutdale in a Mercury Cougar with a final round 9:79 ET at 64 mph.
The Four Wheeler ATV Class winner was Jerry Turner. The racer recorded a final round 11:39 ET at 43 mph. The runner-up and points champion in the class, Travis Hash of Independence, recorded a final round 13:72 ET at 41 mph.
Friday night also showcased the final points race of the year for the employees of the AGT Wytheville Operation Plant. Early in the season, Wythe County racer Stanley Sisk, in his ’68 Camaro, took the points lead and never looked back. And Sisk, at the wheel of his red Camaro, with a final round appearance at Friday night’s event, locked up the 2007 points championship.
However, Heather Jones stole the show on Friday night in her Chevelle with a great 9:18 ET at over 70 mph. It has been a very exciting 2007 season for the AGT Employees at “The Creek.”
The final points race of the International Hot Rod Association Summit Super Series Elk Creek Dragway 2007 racing season was held Saturday night. The results are as follows:
Beginning with the Super Pro Eliminator race, the winner was Richard McKnight of Galax in a Malibu wagon that recorded a 6:32 ET at 98 mph. The runner-up was Brandon White of Cana in a Corvette with a 5:36 ET at 118 mph. The semifinalist was Bill Lewis in a dragster.
In the Junior Dragster Class, the winner was C.J. Mulkey of Speedwell with a final round 10:33 at 57 mph. The runner-up, Jared Hash of Galax, raced to a 7:93 ET.
Michael Waller won the Motorcycle Class with a 6:37 ET at 84 mph. The runner-up, David Belcher of Floyd, had a 9:71 ET at 64 mph.
There is a new track champion in the Footbrake Class – Jamie Holston of Rural Retreat in his Chevelle.
In Saturday night’s racing in the Footbrake Class, Peabody Holdaway drove a Chevrolet Cavalier to the class win with a 10:39 ET at 60 mph. The runner-up was Mike Arnold of Wythe County in a Chevy Vega wagon with a 7:03 ET at 90 mph.
Peabody Holdaway of Troutdale recorded a double win by winning the DOT Class in his Chevy with a final round 10:50 ET at 54 mph. The runner-up in the class – with a 7:65 ET at over 80 mph – was Ray Jacobs of Galax in his full-bodied Chevy pickup.
The Low-ET-Top Speed of the event went to Alan Bales of Marion in his Candy Apple Red Chevy S10 pickup that thundered down the Elk Creek track with a 5:18 ET at over 122 mph.
The track will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the annual $10 day, featuring racing in Super Pro, Footbrake, Jr. Dragster and Motorcycles, plus the Elk Creek Dragway flea market. The flea market begins at 9 a.m. Time trials begin at 1 p.m.
