A pedestrian killed Sunday night on Chapman Road had not been identified as of Monday, according to Virginia State Police. The female was walking in the middle of the road, Sgt. M.T. Conroy said, when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The accident occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Chapman Road between the Fort Chiswell intersection and Lot’s Gap Road.
Conroy said the victim was not carrying any identification. He noted the investigation is continuing but doesn’t expect any charges against the operator of the vehicle.
Trooper Henry Mooney is the investigating officer.
In an unrelated case, a Wythe County man was taken into custody Sunday morning after he refused arrest on a warrant for assault and battery of a family member, police said. Robert L. Corvin, 45, of Crockett faces additional charges stemming from the incident.
According to Wythe County Sheriff Doug King, a deputy went to Corvin’s residence around 11 a.m. to serve the warrant. Corvin indicated he was not going with the officer and grabbed a knife from a knife block on the microwave oven.
King said the deputy was able to disarm Corvin and took him into custody. The officer, the sheriff stated, charged Corvin with obstruction of justice by force.
Corvin also faces the assault and battery of a family member charge which is a third offense. He is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin.
In another case, the Sheriff’s Office arrested an Austinville man wanted for first-degree burglary in Mt. Airy, N.C. Deputies were called to a residence around 8:54 a.m. Saturday on a domestic dispute.
Before a deputy arrived, a caller alerted the dispatcher that the man had left the residence. Officers stopped David E. Arnder, 54, of Austinville on Lead Mines Road.
Sheriff King said the investigation revealed Arnder was wanted in North Carolina for first degree burglary and felony burglary.
Arnder is being held in the regional jail without bond as the investigation continues.
