MOYER AGEE BELL
COPPER HILL-Moyer Agee Bell, 74, passed away at his home Wednesday, May 23, 2007.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by: his wife, Jackie H. Bell, Copper Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Judy Bell, Floyd, Terry and Lesha Bell, Copper Hill; grandchild, Joseph Brian Bell.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Reverend Maurice Wright and Reverend John Early officiating. Interment was in Restvale Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.
DANIEL (DAN) BISHOP HODGES
FRANKLIN COUNTY-Daniel Bishop (Dan) Hodges went to be with his Lord and Savior and to fellowship with his father, mother, brother and mother-in-law on Sunday, May 27, 2007. He was born to the late Raymond Marshall and Addie Dickerson Hodges on May 21, 1929. Also preceding him in death is his twin brother, Donald Bernard Hodges and beloved mother-in-law, Margaret A. Creasy. Dan was a devoted husband, “the love of her life” to Delores Ann (Dee) Hodges for 57 years. He was a wonderful, loving father. A man of few words, a big heart and a lover of nature, he dearly loved his home, family, bird Petie and Jack the neighborhood dog. Dan worked for Merita Bakery for 20 years, until they closed the Roanoke plant. He was then employed at Save A Stop for another 20 years. He retired in 1994 from Advance Auto. In addition to his loving wife, his is survived by: his children, Sandee Schutts and husband, Don, Daniel Steven Hodges and wife, Liz and Douglas Earl Hodges and wife Charla. He was blessed with six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a great-grandson, Daniel Christian, due in September. Also surviving are his older brother, Raymond Marshall Hodges Jr. and wife Lois; sister-in-law, Betty Cormany East and many nieces, nephews and cousins, who all loved him dearly. Also left to cherish his memory are his church family from Franklin Memorial Baptist. A celebration of his life was held Tuesday, May 29 at noon at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Pastor Jeff Richards officiating. Burial followed at Franklin Memorial Park, Rocky Mount.
EDITH ATTAWAY BOARD
FLOYD-Edith Attaway Board, age 95, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horatio and Nancy Blackwell Board, brothers, Dewey, Herman and Parrot Board, sisters, Blanch Light, Hettie Conner, Leona Hess, Annie Lura Board and Margie Board.
Survivors include: beloved sister, Jettie Board, Floyd; nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, Nancy Hess Mottesheard, Charlotte, NC, Brenda Board Gearhart, Copper Hill, James Board, Florida, Wayne Board, Washington, Layne Board, Christiansburg, Daniel Board, Check, Allen Board, Roanoke
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Reverend Layne Board officiating.
Interment followed at Wilson Cemetery.
RUTH PANNILL OWEN BOND
BLUEFIELD, WV-Ruth Pannill Owen Bond, 100, passed away Saturday May 19, 2007 at Glenwood Methodist Retirement Home.
She was born March 6, 1907 in Henry County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. William Thomas Owen, Jr. (Lena Rivers Mills). They moved to Bluefield in 1909. Her brothers and sisters were Ernest, Ruby, Avis, Elsie, Grace, Anna and Dick. Mr. Owen was a contactor and built their home on Mountain View Avenue (formerly Earl Street). It was the first home on the street. He built a number of houses in Bluefield; Wade School, the Peery Building, and Hamilton Hall in the old Bland Street Methodist Church.
Ruth attended Bluefield schools, graduating from Beaver High School in 1926. After receiving her teaching certificate from Concord State Normal College, she taught school at Newton School on Cumberland Road.
She married Cecil C. Bond April 2, 1928.
They had three daughters, Betty Watson (now deceased), Mary Berry and Sally Paige.
Ruth was a devoted mother who provided a loving home for their family. She was an excellent cook, especially yeast rolls, red meat, and her Christmas candies. She sewed for her girls; even embellishing the dresses with embroidery. She loved to read and would sing and recite poetry to her girls as she ironed.
One of her greatest loves was Bland Street United Methodist Church, where she became a member about 90 years ago. Ever faithful, she taught nursery children for 40 years with Mrs. A.C. Dilcher and served on many committees and was active in United Methodist Women. Ruth and Cecil had lived on Mountain View Avenue for 65 years when they moved to Glenwood Methodist Retirement Home.
Cecil died January 11, 2000. Ruth continued in good spirits to minister to staff, family and residents of the Home. Her children, eleven grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren share memories of a life well spent.
Funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m. at Bland Street United Methodist Church with Reverend David L. Hall, Jr. officiating.
Burial followed at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley.

EMMA M. CANNADAY
ROANOKE-Emma M. Cannaday, 87, died Sunday, May 27, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Pete Martin and Julia Emaline Gillespie Martin, a sister Hannah Kelly and a special cousin, Frank Gillespie. Mrs. Cannaday was retired from Lazarus.
She is survived by: son, Curtis R. Cannaday and wife, Kathy, Troutville; sisters, Cassie Carr, Roanoke, Viola Fisher, Iron Gate; brother, Leroy Martin, Hollywood, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held at Oakey’s South Chapel at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. Pastor Ron Graham officiated. Interment followed in Restvale Cemetery, Floyd County. Memorial may be made to League of Older Americans or Hospice. Arrangements by Oakey’s South Chapel.
VICKI COOK CARR
ROANOKE-Vicki Cook Carr, 59, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007. She had been employed at Roanoke Electric Steel for 15 years and also with Nabisco for 10 years. Vicki was a member of the National Iris Society.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert F. Cook, and a sister, Linda Cook.
She is survived by: her husband, David A. Carr; daughter, Rebecca Beckner; mother, Ann Cook Cadd; brother, Bob Cook and wife, Betty; grandchildren, Leslie Clark and Joshua Beckner; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jaden Beckner; former husband and friend, C.J. Melvin; nieces, Jennifer Lively, Heather Strang, nephew, Brent Cook and wife, Amy, Shawn Strang; father-in-law, Byron Carr; sister-in-law and husband, Cathy and Larry Romagnolo; two beloved dogs, Gracie and Samantha.
Funeral service will be held at Oakey’s South Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 31.
Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. in Roselawn Cemetery in Princeton, West Virginia.
AVIS ILENE REED HOLSTEIN
CANTON, OH-Avis Ilene Reed Holstein, age 81, of formerly of Willis, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at her home.
Survivors include: her husband, John Q. Holstein, Canton, OH; sons, John Leo Holstein, Canton, OH, Dawson Crews, Roanoke; daughter, Marlene Low, Canton, OH; step-son, Wayne Allen Holstein, Savannah, GA; sister, Reva Alley, New Castle; 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, May 27, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Craig Reed and Rev. Mike Price officiating.
Interment followed at Duncan’s Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.
LULA IZOLA HOLLANDSWORTH SLAUGHTER
WILLIS-Lula Izola Hollandsworth Slaughter, 84 of Willis, passed away May 24, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cephas and Mettie Quesenberry Hollandsworth, sisters, Opal Hollandsworth Mitchell, Ocie Velma Hollandsworth, Ila Hollandsworth, brothers, Jett Hollandsworth, Gurlie Hollandsworth, Hurshel Hollandsworth, Cletus Hollandsworth.
She is survived by: her loving husband, Herman L. Slaughter of 66 years, Willis, daughter, Rachel Slaughter Marshall, Christiansburg; son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Yvonne Slaughter, Willis; grandchildren, Tammy Costigan and husband Scott, Christiansburg, Sonya Gautier and husband Tony, Pembroke, Joshua Slaughter, Roanoke; great- grandchildren, Trista Costigan, Christiansburg, Seth Gautier, Pembroke; sisters and brother-in-law, Arlie and Cecil Phillip, Fairborn, OH, Virginia Phillips Wetzel, Kernersville, NC; several nieces and nephews

Interment followed in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.
