McCall Alicie
Dorothy Yvonne McCall Alicie, 47, of Baptist Valley, died Aug. 2 at her home.
Born July 19, 1961 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Bobby Cecil McCall, Sr. and Nellie Grey Sutherland McCall.
She was a life long resident of Tazewell County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, George Greer McCall.
Survivors: son, Timothy Shawn Alicie and wife, Kimberly, of Raleigh, N.C.; brother, Bobby C. McCall, Jr. and wife, Becky, of Baptist Valley; sisters, Edith Strouth and husband, Donnie, of Cedar Bluff, Teresa Quesenberry and husband, Leonard, of Baptist Valley, VA; nephews, Brandon McCall and Leonard Quesenberry; nieces, Caitlin McCall, Amber McCall, Elizabeth Grace Quesenberry and Megan Tignor; very special friend, Jerry Powers; seven aunts; and eleven uncles.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating.
Burial followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Mildred Davis Ball
Mildred Davis Ball, 85, of Pounding Mill, died July 30 in a Lebanon hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born April 13, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James Kirby and Daisy Dye Davis, both former Tazewell County natives.
She had spent her entire life in the Richlands area and had attended Cedar Bluff Community Church. She was piano player and Sunday School Teacher for Davis Chapel and Cedar Bluff Community Church and had played at numerous funeral services throughout the years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert L. Ball, and one brother, Jack Davis.
Survivors: daughter, Anita Sue Keen of Richlands; grandson, Jimmy Kevin Keen; great granddaughter, Kayla Keen; special friends, Sherman Elswick, Roger and Shirley Ferrell, and Mary Ann Webb; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Bill Shook officiating.
Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
W. Scott Bowman
W. Scott Bowman, 72, of Sandston, went to be with the Lord July 28.
He was a retired superintendent with Philip Morris, where he received numerous awards. He was a member of Elko Union Church. He loved golf and coaching Little League.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Matilda Bowman, and one brother, Rhea Bowman.
Survivors: wife of 52 years, Alma; children, Pamela Barker (Bill), Christopher Bowman (Stacy); brothers and sisters, Frank Bowman (Lou), Reese Bowman (Norma), Nancy Sawyers, Esther Carr, Connie McGuire (Bobby), all of Tazewell, Margaret Hicks (Charlie) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Harry Bowman (Sherry) of Mechanicsville; brother-in-law, I.G. Hart (Jean) of Moseley; numerous nieces and nephews; five special cousins from the Tidewater area; and a host of friends including special friends, Will McMillan (Shelvia) and Patsy Bowman.
The funeral was held July 30 at 11 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home in Richmond with Rev. Chris Rackley officiating.
Interment was in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston.

Irene Deel Boyd
Irene Deel Boyd, 73, of the Tiller Town section of Council, died Aug. 3 in a Buchanan County hospital.
Born March 29, 1935 in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Silas K. and Ethel L. Murdock Deel.
A lifelong resident, she was a member of the Bee Pentecostal Church. She was a devoted Christian, having been saved on Nov. 9, 1958 and baptized on Nov. 16, 1958.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil Deel and Claude Deel; three sisters, Arbutus Deel, Lillie Ellen Deel and Mettie Jane Sullivan; and one son-in-law, Joel Cook.
Survivors: husband of 56 years, Brady Boyd; sons, Eddie Kyle Boyd and wife, Areybell, of Honaker, Ricky Nelson Boyd, Tony Douglas Boyd and Ginger and Jeffery Dewayne Boyd, all of Council; daughters, Patricia Ella Cook of Lebanon, Glenda Kay Osborne and husband, Roger, of Cleveland, Patty Vonnette Deel and husband, Billy, of Phoenix City, Ala.; brothers, Arville Deel of Council, Glenn Deel and wife, Glenda, of Vansant; sisters, Edith Sykes and husband, Bernard, of Council, Gaynell O’Quinn and husband, Bob, of Bee, Goldie Gilbert of Vincent, Ohio, Martha Presley of Richmond; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 6 with Rev. Giles Ball and Rev. Carson Powers officiating.
Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain.

Dorothy Burke Cook
Dorothy Burke Cook, 96, of Richlands, formerly of Jewell Ridge, died July 31 in a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
Born March 22, 1912 in Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Mathes M. and Susan Belle Brewster Burke, both former Tazewell County natives. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of Jewell Ridge Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of Richlands Chapter #104 O.E.S. for the past 60 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, R. Paul Cook; her second husband, Clyde Cook; one sister, Clara Burke Ellis Anderson; and two brothers, Ira and Earl Burke.
Survivors: daughters, Carol Cook Mullins of Richlands, Barbara Cook Stevens of Milo, Maine; son, Paul Ellis “Slick” Cook and wife, Bonnie, of Richlands; sister, Ruth Burke Dotson and husband, Robert, of Eleanor, W.Va.; brother, David Burke and wife, Eva, of Aiken, S.C.; grandchildren, James Mullins and wife, Patty, Daniel Stevens and wife, Brenda, Paula Jackson and husband, Richard, Rhonda Nease and husband, Gary, Christopher P. Kayla Jean Coxton
Kayla Jean Coxton, 17, of the Mudfork community in North Tazewell, went to be with the Lord Aug. 2 following injuries sustained in a car accident.
Born March 1, 1991 at Richlands, she was the daughter of Rebecca Preston of White Sulfur Springs, W.Va., and the late Bobby Coxton, Jr. She was the adopted daughter of Clyde and Linda Turner of Mudfork.
She would have been a senior at Tazewell High School and was employed at McDonalds in Tazewell.
She was preceded in death by all her great grandparents and several aunts and uncles.
Survivors: her maternal grandparents, Clyde and Linda Turner of Mudfork; paternal grandparents, Bobby and Sharon Coxton, Sr. of Thompson Valley; special aunt, Angie Coxton of California; special uncle and wife, Keith and Melissa Turner of War, W.Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 6 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating.
Burial will follow at Brown’s Chapel Cemetery at Mudfork.
DeWayne Curtis “Doc” Davis
DeWayne Curtis “Doc” Davis, 60, of Cathlamet, Wash., formerly of Tazewell, died July 6 at his home.
Born July 17, 1948, in Tazewell, he was a son of Helen Baylor Davis of Tazewell and the late Robert Conrad Davis.
He was a 1966 graduate of Tazewell High School. In February of 1968 he enlisted in the US Army and did two tours in Vietnam, where he served as a medic. Since then he has been known as Doc. He also did a tour in the Desert Storm Campaign in 1991. He later became a mechanic as a civil service employee in Ft. Lewis, Wash., retiring in 2003 after 20 years. On July 29, 2000, he married the love of his life, Sandra, in Tacoma, Wash. In 2003, they moved to Cathlamet, where they made their home. His passions, besides his wife, were gardening and working in his yard. He loved fishing with his grandchildren, Makayla and Cole and enjoyed fishing in Mexico for the “big” fish and singing karaoke at the “Purple Onion” there. He was a man who really loved life and because of his great smile and positive outlook on life, he was loved by many.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Davis; one sister, Betty Ann Davis; and one sister-in-law, Thyra Davis.
Additional survivors: wife, Sandra; daughter, Misty and husband, Marcus; brothers, Roger Davis of Riner, Randolph Davis of Tazewell; sisters, Connie Thompson of Tazewell, Mary Alice Jackson of Aiken, S.C.; granddaughters, Makayla and Areiana; goddaughter, LaDonna; godson, Greg, and godgrandchildren, Britney, Mallerie, and Cole; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
Harry Hardman, Jr.
Harry Hardman, Jr., 75, of Pounding Mill, formerly of Akron, Ohio, died July 30.
Born October 18, 1932 in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry Hardman, Sr. and Sadie Nicholas Hardman.
He was a retired truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Paul Hardman, and one brother, Paul Hardman.
Survivors: sons, Howard Joey Honeycutt and wife, Edna, of Pounding Mill, Rickie Charles Hardman of Trinity, N.C.; daughter, Dana Michelle Ludwig and husband, Mark, of Trinity, N.C.; sisters, Wilma Jean Piscitelli of Clinton, Ohio, Shirley Ann Brown and husband, Jim, of Barberton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; special friends, Maxine Biller, Gina Lee; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 1 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Raymond “Buddy” Herald officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Katherine Virginia Herold Lewis Harless
Katherine Virginia Herold Lewis Harless, 82, went to be with the Lord July 30 at Fincastle, after a long illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1925, in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Flex Dudley Herold and Annie Virginia Asbury.
She was a longtime member of the Tip Top Church of God. She made her home more recently with her daughter, Christene, in Fincastle, and previously lived many years at the Divides area on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two loving husbands, Melvin Henry Lewis and Paul Jennings Harless; three sisters, Dora Ellen Hamm, Dolly Starland, and Shirley Gillespie; and four brothers, Arnold Herold, Jeff Herold, Sam Herold, and Alex Herold.
Left to cherish her memory are: sons, Donald Lewis and wife, Debra, of Joanna, S.C., Bobby Lewis and wife, Kay, of Princeton, W.Va.; daughter, Christene Horne and husband, Charlie, of Fincastle; sisters, Jocie Tibbs of Bluefield, Va., Peggy Willerbon of Maryland; brothers, Roy Herold of Tazewell, Henry Asbury of Maryland; grandchildren, Troy Lewis, Donald Wayne Lewis, Vickie Miller, Ashleah Pedigo, Amber Gillespie, Charles Horne, Chad Horne, Faith Horne, and Rebecca Horne; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and good friends, Mary Richardson, Maxine Harrington, Ethel Noel, and Joe and Sue Asbury.

Donald “Butch” Rufus Lawson
Donald “Butch” Rufus Lawson, 78, of Richlands, died Aug. 1 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Winding Gulf, W.Va., he was the son of the late Roy Edward Lawson, Sr. and Bessie Sutherland Lawson.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired coal miner with Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. He served his country in the U.S. Army during Korea and was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Richlands Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Rufus Lawson, Jr. and Stevie Wayne Lawson; three sisters, Jean Norman, Betty Nelson, and Dorothy Lawson; and three grandchildren, Juanita Ruth Cruey, Randy Lee Cruey, and Gregory Frederick Ball.

Spence Martin
Beulah Virginia Spence Martin, 96, of Tazewell, formerly of War, W.Va., died July 28 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 25, 1912, in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Frank Spence and Cynthia Cordelia Linkous Spence.
She has been a resident of Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell for the past several years, however she spent most of her adult life in McDowell County residing in War, W.Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James (Jack) Martin; three brothers, Luther, Walter and Robert Spence; and six sisters, Mary Jane Kerley, Mag Strahan, Lettie Marrs, Ethel Hymes, Aura Scott, and Anna Spence.
Survivors: sister, Lena Necessary of Tazewell, along with several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Burial followed at Monte Vista Park Cemetery at Bluefield, W.Va.
James William Peery, Jr.
James William Peery, Jr., 84, of San Leandro, Calif., formerly of McDowell County, W.Va., died July 2 at his home.
Born Oct. 18, 1923 in West Virginia, he was a son of the late James William Peery and Georgia Ethel Hinkle Peery.
He was a member of the Castro Valley First Baptist Church in California.
Survivors: son, Tim Peery and wife, Leslie, of Connecticut; sisters, Aileen Terry and June Williams; and granddaughters, Allegra and Eliza.
A memorial service celebrating his life was held July 12 at Castro Valley First Baptist Church in California.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Russell Hatfield officiating.

Raymond F. Phillips
Raymond F. Phillips, 84, of Hickory, N.C., formerly of North Tazewell, died July 31 in Hickory.
Born Nov. 6, 1923, in Richlands, he and was the son of the late Charlie C. and Emily Cauldwell Phillips, both former Tazewell County natives.
He had spent his entire life in Tazewell County until moving 11 years ago to Hickory. He served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and was a member of the Barns-Beavers Post #7136 in Tazewell. He was a retired coal miner with 38 years for Consol and was a member of Local #6025 in Bishop. He attended the First United Methodist Church in Conover, N.C., and had previously attended Dailey’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Tracy Pruitt and Edith Smith; and two brothers, Bill and Howard Phillips.
Survivors: loving wife of 62 years, Margaret L. Phillips; daughter, Gail Johnson and husband, Gordon, of Hickory; sons, Charles Phillips and wife, Starlett, and Raymond Phillips and wife, Hazel, all of Tazewell; sister, Jean Waters of Bluefield, W.Va.; grandsons, Danny Phillips and wife, Shirley, and Brian Phillips and wife, Stephoney, all of Tazewell, Tom Phillips and wife, Lavonne, of North Tazewell; granddaughters, Angie Jenkins and husband, Derrick, of Merritt Island, Fla., Jennifer Hawkins and husband, Jeff, of Charlotte, N.C.; step-grandsons, Greg Money and wife, Karen, of Roanoke, Jeff Johnson of Minot, N.D., Eric Johnson and wife, Maryria, of Hickory; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Cecil Richardson, Sr.
Cecil Richardson, Sr., 73, of the Pisgah section of Tazewell, died July 29 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Claude Sherman and Elsie Marie Webb Richardson.
He had made his home in the Tazewell area for the past 48 years and was the former owner and operator of Cecil Richardson Trucking Company. He was of the Protestant faith and was a U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, J.R. Richardson and Glenn Richardson.

Interment followed at the Richardson Family Cemetery on Horton Ridge near Raven. Members of the American Veterans Honor Guard conducted military graveside rites.
William Marvin “June” Rutherford, Jr.
William Marvin “June” Rutherford, Jr., 82, of Tazewell, died Aug. 1 at his home.
Born Aug. 18, 1925 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late William Marvin Rutherford, Sr. and Josie Katherine Yost Rutherford.
He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, she was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Sorah Rutherford; one daughter, Kathy Rutherford Peters; one sister, Agnes Lucado; and one brother, Perry Rutherford.
Survivors: daughter, Marvetta Rutherford Stevenson and husband, Stanley, and son-in-law, J.L. Shelton, Sr.
George Henson Shelton, Sr., 75, of Richlands, died July 31 at the home of his son following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 24, 1932 in Richlands, he was the son of the late Henry and Ella Pearl Taylor Shelton, both former Tazewell County natives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and had made his living as a coal miner. He attended Calvary Assembly of North Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Proffitt Shelton, one sister and two brothers.
Survivors: wife, Wanda Shelton; daughters, Gail Smith and husband, Don, and Debbie Keene and husband, Johnny, all of Raven; step daughter, Sharon Vanover of Bland; sons, George Henson (Pork) Shelton, Jr. and wife, Rose, of Richlands, Ray Shelton and wife, Wilma, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Florence Wissell, Mary Shortt and Delores Stevenson, all of Richlands; brother, Milton Shelton of Ohio; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Herman Clyde
Shrader, Sr.
Herman Clyde Shrader, Sr., 79, of Church Hill, Tenn., formerly of Bluefield, Va., died July 30 at Welmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Born April 20, 1929 at Bluefield, Va., he was a son of the late Samuel Homer Shrader and Mary Virginia Wilburn Shrader.
He was a US Army Veteran of WWII and worked throughout his life as a paint contractor. He was a passionate fisherman and an avid musician.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Ruby Alice Shrader, Mayola Slade, Lila Cloyd, Elsie Powers, and Dorothy Atkins; four brothers, Homer Shrader, Elmo Shrader, Frank Shrader, and Bruce Shrader; and one great granddaughter, Breanna Faith Robins.
Survivors: wife of 62 years, Verbenia Arbutus Green Shrader; sons, Herman Clyde Shrader, Jr. and wife, Freda, of Tip Top, Raymond Shrader and wife, Wilma, of Church Hill; daughter, Mary Hayes of Church Hill; brothers, Garnis Shrader and Dorn Shrader, both of Bluefield, Va., Billy Shrader and wife, Irma, of Canton, Ohio, Daniel Shrader of Tucker, Ga.; brother-in-law, George Atkins of Nitro, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; special care giver, Gracie Kimberlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. August 2 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Leon Yost officiating.
Burial followed at the Shrader Family Cemetery on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the VFW Post #9696 of Bluefield, Va.

Vernon B. Stump
Vernon B. Stump, 76, of Deland, Fla., formerly of Richlands, died Aug. 2 in Deland.
Born in Honaker, he was the son of the late Luther and Rosa Stump, former Richlands natives.
He was raised in the Richlands area before serving in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Korean War and Vietnam, obtaining the position of Chief Petty Officer before retiring after 28 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Survivors: wife of 53 years, Linda H. Stump; sons, Jeff Stump of Deltona, Fla., Matthew Stump of Deland; daughters, Leslie Moore of Knoxville, Tenn., Diane Phillips of Manassas; sisters, Dixie Wolf of Richlands, Carrie Burns of Sandusky, Ohio, Shirley Peele of Mt. Washington, Ky.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
Lankford Funeral Home in Deland will be handling the memorial service for Mr. Stump.

Brenda R. “Susie” Turner
Brenda R. “Susie” Turner, 52, of Tazewell, died July 26 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born May 9, 1956, at Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of Pat Carter of Danville.
She was a member of the Lake Witten Worship Center. She loved crafts and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her step father, Edgar G. “Grady” Carter.

Turner of Danville; sister, Pam Williams of Danville; brother, Bob Rye and wife, Lavina, of Danville; grandmother, Ida Mae Taylor of Danville; mother-in-law, Jeanette Turner of Blanche, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenny Turner and wife, Donna, of Blanche, Ronnie Turner and wife, Lisa, of Greensboro, N.C.; niece, Stormie Williams of Tazewell; nephews, Jerry Rigney and Cody Rye, both of Danville; and special friends at Chores & Errands Ambulance Service.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 31 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Adam Frye officiating.
Burial followed at the Taylor Family Cemetery in Witten Valley.
Wanda Ruth Pruett Yost
Wanda Ruth Pruett Yost, 77, of Baptist Valley, died Aug. 2 at Wake Medical Center in Cary, N.C.
Born Nov. 28, 1930, at Canebrake, W.Va, she was a daughter of the late Sherman and Murlie Pruett.
She was a member of the North Tazewell United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Beverly Bruce Yost; one sister, Juanita Yost; and two brothers, Lance Pruett and Anthony Pruett.
Survivors: son, Lance Yost and wife, Sandra, of Cary; grandson, Thomas L. Yost and wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Anna, of Bedford; sisters, Shirley Null and husband, Clyde, of Bishop; sister-in-law, Mattie Belle Pruett of Clarksburg, Md.; brother-in-law, the Rev. Leon Yost of Bishop; additional grandchildren, Kimberly McCormack and husband, David, of Ghent, W.Va., Kelly Brogan and husband, James, of Manassas; and seven great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Gordon McBride officiating.
Burial will follow at the Bandy Family Cemetery at Whittaker Ridge.
