Rosalie Carroll Blackmon
Rosalie Vanetta Carroll Blackmon, 81, of Princeton, WV, died June 22 at her home.
She was born April 11, 1926 in Akron, OH, to the late Elmer and Mary Carroll.
She was a member of Maple View Christian Church and a former employee of Bluefield Regional Medical Center. She always enjoyed having a good time with her family and friends and sharing her handmade crafts. She will be sadly missed by everyone that had the good fortune of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Blackmon; baby sister, Nora Carroll; brother, Cecil Carroll; and granddaughter, Sherry Crigger.
Left to cherish wonderful memories: children, William Elmer Blackmon of Boissevain, daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Mary) Crigger of King, NC, Mrs. Bob (Rita) Hamm of Princeton, WV, Mrs. Henry (Shirley) Grim of Falls Mills; brothers, Richard, Herman, Frank and Finley Carroll; sisters, Minnie Compton and Mamie Booth. She had nine grandchildren: Terry Crigger, Sandra Tackett, Pam Hooker, Barbara Graham, Bobby Hamm, Jill Olsson, Tracy White, Alicia Miller and Amanda Blackmon; and eight great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all her good friends at Princeton Towers.
The funeral was conducted June 25 at 2 p.m. at Dudley Funeral Home in Bluefield, VA with Tony Reed officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

Bowling-Patterson
Kevin Alexander Bowling-Patterson, 27, of Warrior Mines, WV, died July 14 at his home.
Born in Princeton, WV, he was the son of Harless and Ruth Vance Patterson, who raised him, of Warrior Mines.
He was a graduate of Big Creek High School and had worked for Bandy Auto Shop where he did Auto Body Repair. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Vickie Elaine Patterson.
Additional survivors: father, Alex Bowling of Baltimore, MD; sister, Kimberly Bowling of Hawkinsville, GA; brothers, Mark Patterson, and Jordan Patterson, both of Warrior Mines; special grandfather, Clyde W. Bowling of Roanoke; paternal grandmother, Joan Hornsby; and special nephew, Cody Patterson.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 21 at Emanuel Baptist Church in War, WV with Rev. Spencer Oxford officiating.
Interment followed in Hartwell Cemetery in Hartwell, WV.

James (Jim) Roy Brown
James (Jim) Roy Brown, 80, of Bluefield, VA, died July 6 at Westwood Health Care Center in Bluefield, VA.
Born in McCarr, KY, he was a son of the late Clarence Brown and Ollie DeHart Brown.
He was a charter member of the Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, VA, was retired from Consolidation Coal Co., formerly worked for Leckie Mining and Kersey Manufacturing. He was an Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Eugene Brown.
Survivors: wife, June Horn Brown; daughter, Vicki Spurgeon and husband, Eddie, of Bluefield, VA; sons, James R. Brown II, of Laurinburg, NC, Michael Brown of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren, Leanne Woodson and husband, Rob, Jes Spurgeon and wife, Kerri, Matthew Brown, Staci Brown, Michael Brown II, Alex Brown and Maggie Brown; two great grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Wallace and Mary Alice Cline, both of Roseann, Bonnie Justus and husband, Tom, of Hurley; brothers, Bill Brown, Sr. and wife, Sue, of Aflex, KY, Jerry Brown and wife, Phyllis, of Bluefield, VA, Danny Brown and wife, Louise, of Abingdon, Jack Brown and wife, Bernice, of Roseann, Clarence Brown, Jr. and wife, Betty, of Hurley; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 9 at 3 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA with Rev. Cathy Carpenter officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Viola A. “Jackie” Case
Viola A. “Jackie” Case, 87, of the Stoney Ridge section of North Tazewell, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus July 17 at her home.
Born June 20, 1920 at Stoney Ridge, she was the daughter of the late William and Lou Conley.
She was one of the founding and lifelong members of the Stoney Ridge Assembly of God Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie E. Case; one son, Ricky Case; one granddaughter, Tammy Case Coxton; two brothers; and seven sisters.
Survivors: daughters, Carol Gregory and husband, Charles, of Lafayette, AL, Sharon Matney and husband, Charlie, of Goodview, Charity Pruett and husband, Whitley, of Stoney Ridge, Debbie Spangler and husband, Ron, of Cloverdale; brother, Brittian Conley and wife, Louise, of Erie, PA; daughter-in-law, Joanne Frame and husband, John, of Bim, WV; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends that were special to her just like her own family.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 21 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Carter Wells officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Susan Marlene Clark
Susan Marlene Clark, 49, of Richlands, died July 19 following a lengthy illness.
Born in Warriormine, WV, she was the daughter of Eva Pippin Hicks Horgan and the late Billy Hicks.
She was a graduate of Big Creek High School in War, WV and a graduate of Southwest Community College. She was a Registered Nurse for Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem. She had spent the last 19 years in the Richlands area and was a member of the New Hope Assembly Church in Claypool Hill.
Those who remain to carry on her spirit are: her loving husband, Dudley Clark; son, Michael Ray Clark of the home; nephew, Mathew Nelson of the home; and sister, Vivian Bedrosian of Roanoke.
A memorial service was held at New Hope Assembly Church at Claypool Hill July 21 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Casey officiating.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of arrangements.
Dewey Wayne Corder
Dewey Wayne Corder, 53, of Newport News, formerly from Bluefield, VA, died July 1 in Newport News.
Born in Bluefield, WV, he was a son of the late Alvie Garland Corder and Lelia Millirons Corder.
He was a graduate of Graham High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roger Corder, and one sister, Edna Corder.
Survivors: brothers, Robert Corder and wife, Lelia, of North Tazewell, Garland Corder and wife, Marie, of Knoxville, TN; and sister, Ruth Mitchell and husband, Woody, of Newport News.
His body has been cremated.

Arvil Bobby Coxton, Jr.
Arvil Bobby Coxton, Jr., 35, of Redondo Beach, CA, formerly of the Thompson Valley section of Tazewell, died July 13 in Los Angeles, CA.
Born Dec. 24, 1971 in Manassas, he was a son of Arvil Bobby Coxton, Sr. and Sharon Hensley Coxton of Thompson Valley.
He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and was employed as a construction worker. He had lived in Redondo Beach for the past six years, moving there from Thompson Valley.
Additional survivors: daughters, Kayla Coxton of Tazewell, Natalie Coxton of Redondo Beach; sister, Angela Coxton of Redondo Beach; and special friend, Rachel Lujan of Redondo Beach.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. July 25 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Michael Justice and Dr. Rev. Janice Harris officiating.
Interment will follow in the Coxton Family Cemetery in Thompson Valley.
Norman E. Dangerfield
Norman Edward Dangerfield, 86, of Bluefield, WV, died July 4 at his home.
Born July 4 in Pocahontas, he was a son of the late Lee Dangerfield and Elizabeth Edwards Dangerfield.
He had served in the Air Force during WWII and then entered the National Guard and retired from the Reserves as a Captain. He also retired from National Electric Coil Co., was a member of the Edgemont Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and had taught a Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the American Legion, was a member of the DVA, bowled n local bowling leagues and loved to travel. He was a 1939 graduate of Graham High School.
Survivors: wife, Louise Lambert Dangerfield; daughters, Sharon Thomas and husband, Joe, of Lexington, Sandra D. Thompson and husband, Harry, of Bluefield, VA, Sherrie Jenkins and husband, Frank, of Winchester; grandchildren, Windsor S. Nevitt and husband, Dennis, of Bedford, Stuart D. Sword and wife, Anna, of Ft. Polk, LA, Micah B. Sword and wife, Christie, of Salem, Dr. Whitney Thompson Delaney and husband, Keegan, of Bethesda, MD, Morgan F. Thompson of Charleston, SC, Cody M. Jenkins of Winchester, Jacqueline B. Johnston of Chattanooga, TN; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Rachel King of Bristol, TN, Esther Lester and husband, Clayton, of Roan Mountain, TN; and special brother-in-law, who he thought of as a son, Ralph W. Bertha Sybil Dudley
Bertha Sybil Phillips Dudley, 87, of Heritage Hall, Tazewell, and formerly from Bastian and Falls Mills, died June 30 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 14, 1919 in Falls Mills, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Almeda Bond Phillips.
She was a graduate of Graham High School and had formerly worked at J.C. Penny Co. and Leggett Dept. Store.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Hubert Dudley; one son, James H. Dudley, Jr.; sisters, Dorothy Smith and Mildred Coeburn; and one brother, Richard Phillips.

Rev. George (Ed) Hankins
Rev. George Edward (Ed) Hankins, 82, of Baptist Valley, died July 16 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born July 16, 1925 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late James B. (J.B.) and Eliza Ann Beavers Hankins of McGuire Valley.
He was a member and past master of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge No. 260 where he served as Chaplain since 1971. He was a 32nd degree mason. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Kazim Shrine Temple at Roanoke and served in 1991 as District Deputy Grand Master for the 45th Masonic District.
He was a building contractor for over 20 years and was a retired Tazewell County school teacher at the Tazewell County Vocational School. He was a retired Freewill Baptist Minister where he pastored Yost Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Baptist Valley for over 15 years and ministered to many during his lifetime. He was an avid fisherman and member of the Tazewell County Sportsman’s Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Martin Hankins; four brothers, Reese Hankins, Homer Hankins, Fred Hankins and John Hankins; and two sisters, Aulena Stafford and Ocie Price.
Survivors: sons, Michael Hankins and wife, Cheryl, of Thompson Valley, Wayne Hankins and wife, Teresa, of Cedar Bluff, Daniel Hankins of McGuire Valley; daughter, Jane Hankins Matney of Tazewell; sister, Lula Mae Waddell of Tazewell; grandchildren, Aaron Brown, Ryan Hankins, Joshua Hankins, Ashley Hankins, Megan Matney and Mary Ann Matney; step grandchildren, Amanda Puckett, Krista Masingo and Wendy Woodard; many nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Frances Coleman.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 19 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Chuck Patterson, Rev. Ralph Bostic and Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Lawrence R. Helbert
Lawrence Raymond Helbert, 69, of Richlands, died July 17 in a Claypool Hill nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Seaboard, he was the son of the late Rufus Ealy and Ellen McKinley Mabe Helbert, both Seaboard natives.
He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was a retried miner from Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member of UMWA Local #1640 and attended Jones Chapel Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, David Pearce Helbert and Daniel Leroy Helbert; one great grandson, Ryan David Helbert; and one brother, Robert Lee Helbert.
Survivors: son, Keith Helbert and wife, Pam, of Richlands; daughters, Sheree Reynolds and husband, Phillip, and Tammy Helbert, all of Richlands; sisters, Charlotte Sareno of Franklin Park, IL, Mildred Grimmett of Laredo, WV; brother, Reece Helbert of Hickory, MS; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 19 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Leon O’Quinn officiating.

Thomas C. Kirby
Thomas C. Kirby, 75, of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with the Lord July 18.
Born in East Gulf, WV, he was a son of the late Clarence Kirby and Josephine Yost Kirby.
He was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA, was retired from Aratex Rental Uniform Co. and had formerly worked at McQuails Furniture Co. and for Brown Edwards. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, J.D. and Joyce Kirby; sister, Elizabeth Kirby; and a daughter-in-law, Diana Kirby.
Survivors: wife, Dona Sexton Kirby; son, Timothy S. Kirby of Conway, SC; daughter, Susan Robinett and husband, Dwight, of Princeton, WV; grandchildren, Heather and Aaryn Kirby of Conway, Alyson and Kelsey Robinett of Princeton, WV; and brother, C. J. Robert Dane Lawson
Robert Dane Lawson, 92, of Bailey Switch Rd., North Tazewell, died June 29 at his home.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James Tazewell Lawson and Mary Surilda Crutchfield Lawson.
He was of the Protestant faith and had attended the Bailey United Methodist Church years ago.
He had been a farmer most of his life and had formerly worked for Ossit Church Furniture Co.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Mae Booth Lawson; one son, James H. (Danny) Lawson; and one daughter, Mary Peggy Lawson; two sisters, Amanda Patrick and Martha Thompson; and three brothers, Wade, Frank and Walter Lawson.
Survivors: daughter-in-law, Peggy E. Lawson of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Shelia Gray, Belinda McDowell and Barbara Hart; six great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; brother, Aubrey Lawson and wife, Virginia, of Bluefield, VA; sister, Lillie Scarberry of Bluefield, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held July 2 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Minister Thomas Puckett officiating.
Burial followed in the Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
Robert Juel Leedy, Jr.
Robert Juel Leedy, Jr., 71, of Bluefield, WV, died July 4 at his home.
Born in Welch, he was a son of the late Robert J. Leedy and Audrey Harris Leedy.
He was an honor graduate of W.V.U. in 1961 with a civil Engineer Degree. He retired as a civil engineer after many years in bridge and highway designing. He formerly worked for the City of Bluefield as an assistant City Engineer, for the W.Va. Division of Highways-Princeton District #10 and Charleston Structural Division. He was a member of the Mole Holer International Tunnel Building Association, based in Switzerland for his work on the D.C. Subway System. After retiring, he had recently worked for Echo Star. He was a member of the Bluefield Elks, Moose and Eagles Lodges. He had worked part time for Dove Shields Realtor as a Real Estate agent and also had worked for Pentree Engineering in Princeton as a highway engineer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Frances Leedy, and one brother, Ted Leedy.
Survivors: sister, Mary Leedy of Bluefield, VA; and brothers, James Leedy of Bluefield, VA, and Howard Leedy and wife, Priscilla, of Bluefield, WV.
In honoring his wishes, he has been cremated.
Memorial services were held July 7 at 8 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Minister James Shelton officiating.
Thomas A. Lowe
Thomas A. Lowe, 86, of the Middle Creek section of Cedar Bluff, died July 20 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cedar Bluff, he was the son of the late Mose and Vicie Lowe, both Cedar Bluff natives.
He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area all of his life and was a retired mechanic from CONSOL having worked there for 44 years. He had attended grade school on College Hill in Cedar Bluff and was an elder and deacon at the Cedar Bluff Presbyterian Church. He had also attended the Middle Creek Advent Christian Church. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 AF & AM and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a member of UMWA Local #6640 Amonate.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Johnson and Margaret Mullins, and two brothers, Everett and Wayne Lowe.
Survivors: wife, Lillie B. Lowe; daughters, Shirley Childress and husband, Jim, of Cedar Bluff, Nancy C. Burke and husband, Charlie, of Perry, OH; son, Franklin Eugene Lowe of Cedar Bluff; sister, Virginia Johnson of Baltimore, MD; brother, Buford Lowe of Baltimore; grandchildren, Michael Bell, Jr., Richard Bell, Shane Bell, Brian Burke, Scotty Burke, and Gina Lynn Lowe; great grandchildren, Jasmine Bell, Shay Bell, Savannah Bell, Shawn Bell, Jamie Ray Burke, Jordan Ashley Burke, and Marcus Ross; great great grandchild, Hunter Kennedy; and granddaughter-in-law, Judy Sutherland and husband, Pat.

Henley Dean McCoy, Sr.
Henley Dean McCoy, Sr., 55, of Bandy, died July 16 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Henry Ford and Dorothy Young McCoy, both former Tazewell County natives.
He was a mechanic and had lived most of his life in the Indianapolis area and had moved back to the Richlands area eight years ago. He had served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dan Button.
Survivors: daughters, Candice McCoy and Kimberly McCoy, both of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Henley McCoy, Jr. and John McCoy, both of Indianapolis; girl friend, Kelly Hodges of Bandy; former wife, Angela McCoy of Indianapolis; sisters, Barbara McCoy of Danville, IN, Gail Vermillion, Debbie Bunten and Lisa Martin, all of Greencastle, IN; brothers, Doug Bunten of Greencastle, Jerry Martin of Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Angelina McCoy and Chase Boltinghouse.

Brad Miller
Brad Miller, 51, of Trinity, NC, formerly of Richlands, went home to be with the Lord July 18 in a High Point, NC health care facility.
Born Dec. 26, 1955 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Steve Frank and Pauline Blankenship Miller.
He was a coal miner for 20 years. He attended Full Armor of God Church at Trinity, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Steve Wayne Miller.
Survivors: wife of 34 years, Jean Miller; sons, Bryan Miller and wife, Jennifer, and Chad Miller and wife, Sarah, all of Pounding Mill; grandchildren, Amanda Miller, Wyatt Miller, Gracie Miller, Sophie Miller, Sawyer Miller, Skylar Owens and Megan Owens; sisters, Carol Lester and husband, Tom, of Conway, SC, Brenda Bullion of Richlands, Debbie Senters and husband, Sollie, of Trinity, Vickie Poe and husband, Frank, of Lafayette, GA; special friends, Ken Dye and David Dye; and several nieces and nephews.

William “Bud” Poteet, Sr.
William H. “Bud” Poteet, Sr., 74, of Bluefield, VA, died July 10 at his home.
Born in Princeton, he was a son of the late Gurthie Edgar Poteet and Sadie Osborne Poteet.
He was of the Christian faith, was a former employee for many years for Pet Dairy in Bluefield, VA, worked for Poteet Oil Co. and retired from Sutphin and Sons Petroleum. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a former member of the Princeton Moose Lodge. He was an avid bowler and loved to pitch horseshoes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Osborne, Nancy Cox, Betty Dillman and Doris Brooks, and one brother, Gurthie Edgar Poteet, Jr.
Survivors: wife, Evangeline “Van” Boothe Poteet; son, William H. (Spud) Poteet, Jr. and wife, Rosalie, of Bluefield, WV; daughters, Cheryl Peery and husband, Eddie, of Bluefield, VA, Dana Poteet of Colorado, Carla White of Florida; brother, Don Poteet of Bluefield, VA; sister, Dana Porterfield and husband, Bob, of Newport; 12 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 13 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Minister Bill Boyd officiating.
Burial followed in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bluewell.
Military graveside services were conducted by the Bluefield, VA VFW Memorial Post 9696.
Charles Ray Prater
Charles Ray Prater, 69, died July 16 at home in Richlands, where he resided with his daughter, Valerie. His daughters, Vicki and Valerie were with him when he passed.
Born Aug. 6, 1937 in Broken Bow, OK, he was the oldest son of Charles and Rachel Prater whom he cared for 18 years in Arvin, CA until they passed. He had recently moved from Arvin to Richlands to be with his daughter.
He served 2½ years in the United States Navy and was a master plumber. He loved to hunt and fish, but most of all he loved his girls. He was married to Rosie Dewey, the mother of his girls, for 13 years and he never remarried. They remained close friends all the way until the end.
Survivors: daughters, Valerie Jackson of Richlands, Vicki Maher and Debra Noble of Casa Grande, AZ; brothers, Richard Prater, Bobby Prater and Freddy Prater, all of Bakersfield, CA; and sisters, Nancy O’Brien of Bakersfield, Rilda Dustin of Lewisburg, TN, and Betty Gaswick of Florence, AZ.
He was cremated as he requested and a private family memorial was held July 19. His former wife, Rosie, attended the memorial.

Rosie Mae Price
Rosie Mae Price, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died July 21 at a Richlands hospital.
Born in Smith County, she was the daughter of the late George Miller and Amanda Fowler Hagy.
She was a lifelong resident of the area having worked 16 years at Swans Cleaners in Richlands and as a housekeeper in the area. She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Price.
Survivors: daughter, Ruby Lee Sweet of Richlands; step daughters, Debra J. Griffith and companion, Roy Osborne, of Richlands, Barbara Alicie of Cedar Bluff, step sons, Paul Price, Jr. of Sierra Vista, AZ, Darrell Price of Bland; sister, Minnie Belle Lester of Baptist Valley; brother, George Bill Hagy of Richlands; special grandsons, James Pilkins and Robert Asbury; four great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; ten step grandchildren; and ten step great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 23 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Dannie Short officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Chad Dexter Rowe
Chad Dexter Rowe, 36, of Whitewood, died July 18 in a Grundy hospital.
Born June 11, 1971 in Richlands, he was a son of Johnny and Sandra Creed Rowe of Rowe.
A lifelong resident of the Buchanan county area, he was of the Holiness faith and attended Pentecostal Faith Temple.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Dexter Rowe.
Additional survivors: wife, Katherine Rowe; sisters, Renee Justus and husband, Sam, of Knoxville, TN, Debra Rowe of Bristol, VA; maternal grandparents, Harold and Freddie Creed of Rowe; paternal grandmother, Opal Rowe of Rowe; and nieces, Emilee Justus and Abby Justus.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. July 22 in the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Rowe with Rev. Troy Lester, Rev. Ancil Childress, and Rev. Tim Lester officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Wilma F. Stephens
Wilma Frances Stephens, 88, of Bluefield, died July 15 in London, KY.
Born at Bailey Switch, she was a daughter of the late Luther Carter and Martha Helmandollar Carter.
She was of the protestant faith and was an avid reader and loved to make quilts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Siebert T. Stephens; one brother, Buford Carter; and one sister, Jessie Myers.
Survivors: sons, Jim Browning and wife, Linda, of Dawsonville, GA, Gerald Browning and wife, Jo Ann, of North Tazewell, Jack Browning and wife, Judy, of Bluefield, VA; daughters, Pat Belcher and husband, Toby, of Princeton, WV, Carol White and husband, Kenneth, of London, KY; sister, Rebecca Vernon of Bluefield, WV; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted July 19 at 1 p.m. at the Grandview Mausoleum Chapel with Tom Baynes officiating.

Leona Jackson VanDyke
Leona Jackson VanDyke, 89, of Glade Spring, formerly of Buchanan County, died July 21 at her home following an extended illness.
Born at Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Smith Hamilton Jackson and Myrtle Reedy Jackson Keen.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. July 23 at the VanDyke Family Cemetery at Rt. 618 Buchanan County with Evangelist Mike Rife officiating.

Emyle Elizabeth Wells
Emyle Elizabeth Green Wells, 84, of Raven, died July 20 following a lengthy illness.
She was the daughter of the late Charles Preston and Mary Frances Horton Green. She was a lifelong resident of the Raven area and a charter member of Raven Assembly of God.
Her life was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. These were the joy of her life. Her heart, home, and kitchen were always open and set for all the neighborhood children that may be near at mealtimes. She was employed by Russell County School System for 35 years, serving in the school cafeteria at Givens Elementary and Swords Creek Elementary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Claude Wells; one grandson, Jonathan Enoch Wells; one sister, Velma Green Lawson; and brothers, Raleigh, Herman, Hershel, Willard, Donald, and Andrew Green.
Survivors: daughters, Pat Vernon and husband, Rick, of Raven, Lisa Cruey and husband, Les, of Grottoes; sons, Jim Wells and wife, Shirley, of Grove, OK, John Wells of Bristol, TN, Doug Wells and wife, Lola, of Abingdon; grandchildren, Tammy Walls, Randy Vernon, Brandon Vernon, Susan Addison, Beth Wells, Rebecca Wells, Sara Emyle Cruey and Madison Cruey; great-grandchildren, Bryce Addison, Grace Addison, Baleigh Vernon, Zack Slone, Justin Slone, Emily Walls and Ethan Walls; special sister, Pauline Plaster; special caregivers, Total Home Care Hospice, and the staff of Golden Age Retirement Home; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Ellen Lorraine Sorah Yost
Ellen Lorraine Sorah Yost, 85, of North Tazewell, died July 19 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1921 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Bertie Fleenor Sorah.
She was a member and former Sunday school teacher of the Tazewell Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel S. Henegar, Lucille S. Riley and Janice S. Rutherford, and two brothers, Walter Sorah and Major Sorah.
Survivors: husband, Richard J. Yost; son, R. Edward Yost and wife, Deborah, of Roanoke; granddaughters, Angela Sweeney and husband, Doug, of Hickory, NC, Stephanie Yost of Roanoke; sisters, Sallie S. Rasnick and Elizabeth S. Lockhart, both of Tazewell; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. July 22 at Tazewell Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eddie Nash officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell.
