ALVIN EDWIN CONNER
CHECK-Alvin Edwin Conner, 95, passed away Friday, October 12, 2007 at his home.
He is survived: by his loving wife of 72 years, Ocie Graham Conner; two daughters and spouses, Judith and Edward Howard, Glenna and James Vest; two sons and spouse, Macle and Gerlene Conner, Eddie Conner; granddaughters and husbands, Teresa and Jimmy Bowman, Sherry and Wayland Bond, Rhonda and Freddie Conner, Missy and Brad Mullins; grandsons and wives, Rodney and Sandra Vest, Mark Howard; seven great grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 15, at Gardner Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Walker and Reverend Roy Turpin officiating. Interment followed in Wilson Cemetery.


SCHELENA HALEY COX
RINER-Schelena Haley Cox, 53, passed away at her home Wednesday, October 10, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul V. Cox.
She is survived by: two daughters, Amanda Dawn Cox and Kerry Cox Goad and husband Ricky, all of Riner; three grandchildren, Randal Keith Wilson Ronnie Lee Wilson and Brittany Nicole Cox; mother and step-father, Lucy H. and George Hale of Floyd; father and step-mother, Carlton and Mary Haley of Christiansburg; three brothers, Roy Haley, Leo Haley, Virgil Hale of Christiansburg; three sisters, Dixie Tolley, Wanda Culverhouse and Melita Stuart.
Funeral service was held at noon Saturday, October 13, at the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church, 525 Harkrader Street, Christiansburg with Reverend David Hurd officiating. Interment followed in Hale Family Cemetery, Dusty Rock Road, Floyd.
Arrangements were handled by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd.

L.J. PURSIFULL
Newport News, VA -  L. J. Pursifull, 87, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, was called to eternal rest October 11, 2007.  He will be fondly remembered and cherished by family and friends.  L. J. was born in Pineville, KY on August 31, 1920

He is survived by: his devoted and loving wife of 65 years, Pauline (Polly) Pursifull; daughter, Sharon Anne Winter of Newport News; son, Krieg Phillip Pursifull, DDS and wife, Montreo of Floyd; two granddaughters, Leigh-Ann Dryden Pursifull of Anderson, SC and Karen Emily Radford, husband, Jamie and great grandson, Philip Mathew Radford of Christiansburg; sister in law, Georgia Scott Olwin and numerous nieces and nephews of Payne, OH.  Also surviving are special friends, Jeff Williams of Hampton and his two beloved puppies, Precious and Princess.

A memorial service will be held at a later date as well as the burial in Payne, OH.  Memorial donations may be made to the Communion Fund, Grace United Methodist Church, 1209 Country Club Road, Newport News, VA 23606, Personal Touch Hospice, 732 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite 203, Newport News, VA 23606 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Carl Edward (Ed) Shepherd, Jr., 51 of Galax, passed away on October 14, 2007 at his residence.  Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by a son Dewayne Cummins.  He is survived by his wife Vicki Hash Shepherd of the home; parents Carl, Sr. & Cora Sue Shepherd of Willis; daughters Kristi Shepherd of Hillsville and Vickie Gibbs of Newport, TN; step sons & spouse Eric & Chrissy Hash of Galax and Seth Hash of Hillsville; brother Neal Shepherd of Pilot, VA; sister Tammy Runion of Willis; five grandchildren Will Keatts, Destiny Keatts, Tori Gibbs, Abbi Gibbs, Casey Gibbs, and Brooks Hash; sister-in-law Becky Hawkins of Galax; brother-in-law Richard Runion; niece Taylor Runion; nephews Zach Runion and Stoney Shepherd; and several close friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel at 2:00 PM with Rev. Ty Harrison and Charles Grandel officiating.  Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens.  Military rites will be conducted by the Am Vets.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday night from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  A guestbook is available online by visiting http://www.vaughanguynnandmcgrady.com.  Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.


Obit for URIAH ELBERT TURPIN

Uriah Elbert Turpin, age 85, of Floyd left on his heavenly journey Sunday October 14, 2007.  Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Geneva Turpin; his ten children & their spouses: Ray & Linda Turpin, Roy & Juanita Turpin, Wanda Cox, Bonnie & Jesse Lawrence, Juanita & Joe Salmons, Kathy Adkins, Rita Turpin & James Worrell, Marla & Danny Owen, Teresa & Scott Beard, & Buddy Turpin; one brother: Hubert Turpin; two sisters: Agnes Mitchell & Janie Morford; fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren & one great-great grandchild.  He is preceded in death by two sons: Guy Turpin & Garry Joe Turpin.

Uriah was known as a hard working man who made providing for his family his priority, who enjoyed visiting with and helping others throughout the community, and who enjoyed having fun and bringing joy to the young and old alike by always carrying around candy to share.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday October 16, 2007 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Ralph Duncan officiating.  Interment followed at Duncan’s Chapel Cemetery.
