SPITLER CARROLL
FLOYD-Shirley Lou Spitler Carroll, 52, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2007 at her home.
She was born in Globe, Arizona on December 13, 1954.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph N. “Joe” Carroll, father, Paul Eugene Spitler, sister, Pat Shelby, brother, Stanley Spitler.
She had been a certified nurse’s assistant, and was a member of the Topeco Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by: a daughter, Yolanda Cook of Mason, West Virginia; son, Billy Joe Westfall of Marion; four step-sons, Shannon Carroll of Georgia, Danny Carroll of Missouri, David Carroll of Georgia, Larry Carroll of Georgia; three step-daughter, Kim Carroll, Jennifer Carroll, and Janet Carroll, all of Georgia; 30 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild; mother, Opal Heartsong Spitler of Globe, Arizona; brothers, Curly Spitler and Barry Spitler, both of Globe, Arizona; sister, Verlene Breckenridge of Meadows of Dan; special sister-in-law and caregiver, Phyllis Simmons, and caregiver Amy Underwood.
A graveside service was held on Sunday, September 30, at 3:00 p.m. at the Puckett Family Cemetery in Meadows of Dan with Pastor Michael Varner officiating.

DUBLIN-Verlie Turpin Lyons, 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, September 26, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hobert and Dovey Turpin, husband, Lewis J. Lyons, and sister, Eula Phillips.
Survivors include: son, Weldon Minnick; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and David McGuire, Carol and Danny Ratliff, Tammy and Allen Nixon; grandchildren, Jay McGuire, Glen McGuire, Jordan McGuire, Eric Atkinson, Crystal Carpenter, Danielle Ratliff, Daniel Ratliff, Shawn Martin, Brandy Martin; great-grandchildren, Garrett, Kayla, Seth, Caitlin, Kasey, Kalob, Faith, Elizabeth.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Clyde Bishop officiating. Interment followed at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

Robert Allen Pauley, 45, of Floyd passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2007. Robert spent his working life with his brothers, Roger and Kenneth in the family well drilling business. He was preceded in death by his father, William
(Bud) Pauley and brother, Kenneth Pauley.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Mabel and Turner DeHart; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Becky Pauley; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Mike Harman, Betty and Ronnie Underwood; sister-in-law, Catherine Pauley, half-brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Barbara Pauley, step brother, Bill Turner DeHart, step-sister, Delilah Baltz, friend, Trina Pauley; four special nephews, Steven and Jenn, Allen and Diamond, Brian and Jolita, Matt Harman; four special great nieces and nephews, Davey, Skyler, Arianna, Lucianna; numerous special friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Gardner Funeral Home with Dr. Dave Holladay and Rev. Steve Lackey officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday at Gardner Funeral Home from 5 until 9 p.m.

Dr. Ruth Douglas See
HARRISONBURG-Dr. Ruth Douglas See, 97, died Tuesday evening, October 2, 2007 at the Sunnyside Community in Harrisonburg, where she had resided for many years.
Born on March 16, 1910, in Baltimore, MD, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Robert Gamble See and Louisa D. (Spear) See. She relocated to Floyd, VA with her family, where she was raised and educated. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin College, she earned a Master’s degree from the New York Theological Seminary and her Doctorate from New York University.
Dr. See began her professional life in teaching at Spellman College and later was on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University. She had also worked for the Presbyterian Church on the board of Christian Education in Richmond. The last position she held, prior to retirement, was in historical research at the Historical Foundation of the former Montreat College in North Carolina.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, she was, until recently, actively teaching Sunday School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine A. See and brother, Robert Gamble See Jr., as well as two nephews.
She is survived by four nieces and four nephews; five great nieces and eight great nephews; and, a number of great-great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday October 8, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. in the Meredith Chapel of the Sunnyside Community, Harrisonburg, with Rev. Paul O’Gorek, officiating. The family will receive friends upon the conclusion of the service. Interment and Graveside Services will be held on Monday at 1:30 P.M. in Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fort Defiance.

WILLIAM HALE TERRY
MEADOWS OF DAN-Elder William Hale Terry, 71, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at his home. He was born in Patrick County on May 25, 1936. Elder Terry was a member of New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church, and had pastured at four Primitive Baptist, Old Union Church of Indian Valley, Paynes Creek Church in Floyd, Salem Head of the River Church of Check and New Bell Spur Church in Meadows of Dan. He was the moderator of the Smith River Primitive Baptist Association and managing editor of the Signs of the Time magazine periodical based on the Primitive Baptist Faith. He had served in the United States Army and had retired as an engineering supervisor with Appalachian Power Company with over 37 years of service. Elder Terry was preceded in death by his father, William Hugh Terry, a grandchild, Hannah Fleming, brother, Lee Terry.
Elder Terry is survived by: his wife, Glenna Turman Terry of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Jon Coleman of Bassett, Carla and Tony Horton of Hillsville and Gina and Frank Fleming of Mount Airy, North Carolina; son and daughter-in-law, Marcus and Mary Ann Terry of Meadows of Dan; four grandchildren, Joshua Coleman, Austin Horton, Megan Fleming and Makayla Terry; two great-grandchildren, Skylar Coleman and Benjamin Coleman; mother, Ilene Hale Terry Clifton of Meadows of Dan; three sisters, Marie Bowman of Meadows of Dan, Ruth Hall of Hillsville and Jane Largen of Dugspur; two brothers, Elder Alan Terry of Floyd and Tom Terry of Woodlawn; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Saturday, October 6, at 11 a.m. at New bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Larry Hollandsworth, Kenneth Key, Alan Terry and Carl Terry officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with a flag presentation by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor guard.
