ROY MATHEW BENTLEY
CHRISTIANSBURG-Roy Mathew Bentley, 85, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2007.
Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Wilma and Lewis Cook, Pulaski. Shirley Dickerson, Radford, Darlene and Jackie Abshire, Patsy and Charlie Stump, Brenda Bentley, all of Christiansburg, Ruby and Fred Stone, Dublin; son and daughter-in-law, Roy Junior and Nora Bentley, Floyd; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2007 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Sam Hancock & Rev. Roy Junior Bentley officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
ALLIE WHITLOW CALDWELL
ROANOKE-Allie Whitlow Caldwell went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 5, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. Caldwell.
She is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Tracy Caldwell; granddaughter, Taylor Caldwell; sisters, Esther West and husband John, Vera Tolbert and husband, Glen; nieces and one nephew. Special thanks to Linda Harry and Julie Owen for their love and devotion. JERRY MCKINLEY HARMAN, JR.
KING GEORGE COUNTY-Jerry McKinley Harman, Jr. of King George County died Sunday, August 19, 2007, at Ashland Convalescent Center. He was born in Floyd County on December 30, 1927.
He was a graduate of Willis High School and Virginia Southern College with a degree in business administration. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Pi Rho Zeta Fraternity and Peace Lutheran Church of King George.
He was the owner and manager of J.M. Harman Lumber Co. at Owens and Mechanicsville, MD until his retirement.
He loved flying his own plane for many years, watching football games and being with his family.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Frances M. Harman of King George; daughter, Lynne H. Haskins; son-in-law, C.W. Haskins of Montpelier; son, Gregg M. Harman; daughter-in-la, Cathy S. Harman; grandson, Mac, all of King George; sisters, Marie Williams of Roanoke and Alva Mae Harman of Floyd; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed and loved by all.
Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 23, at Peace Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Reverend Terry Naumann, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Historyland Memorial Park.

MARY RUTH HURT HAYNES
CHRISTIANSBURG-Mary Ruth Hurt Haynes, 93, passed away Tuesday August 14, 2007. She was born October 24, 1913 in West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Calvin and Sarah Hair Hurt, husband, Paul M. Haynes, son, John E. Haynes, daughter-in-law, Ruth Haynes, one sister and four brothers.
Survivors include: sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Haynes, David and Helen Haynes, Paul and Betty Haynes, all of Christiansburg, Mark Haynes, Florida; brother and sister-in-law, Rufus and Ruby Hurt, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth was a member of Main Street Baptist Church for nearly 50 years and served on mission teams and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of VA amd WV Daughters of American Revolution and served the Republican Party for 80 years.
Funeral services was held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Main Street Baptist Church, Christiansburg, with Dr. A. Timothy Hight and Rev. Gary Long officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.
IDA HOYT STOTESBERRY MCNEIL
HOPEWELL- Ida Hoyt Stotesberry McNeil, 94, a longtime resident of Hopewell, Virginia, died peacefully after a period of declining health on Sunday, August 12, 2007, surrounded by family and friends.
She was a faithful member of the Cawson Street Church of Christ in Hopewell, for over 65 years and a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker.
She will be greatly missed by all those who lives she touched. She was the widow of James R. McNeil, of Floyd County, to whom she was married for 65 years. She was born in Pungo (Beaufort County) NC, on September 10, 1912, she was the daughter of Thomas Berkley and Mosella Elizabeth Gardner Stotesberry. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nollie Adams and Nora Wade, and a brother, Thomas Bennie Stotesberry.
She leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Hazel Ray McNeil Miller and husband, Harry, James David McNeil, Velda Victoria McNeil and Daniel Ross McNeil and his wife Elaine; three grandchildren, Harry Arnold Miller III, Rebecca Jane Miller Stuckey and her husband, John, and Tracey Jean McNeil Powell and her husband, Ricky; two step-grandchildren, Matthew Elam and Eric Elam; four great-grandchildren, Dana Leann Stuckey, Suzanne Michelle Stuckey, Kaitlyn Marie Miller and Karen Elizabeth Powell; two step-great-grandchildren, J.R. Powell and Brandon Powell; and a brother, Thomas Berkley Stotesberry, Jr. of California.
Funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 15 at 11 a.m. at Cawson Street Church of Christ with Mural Worthey and William Harper officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA.

EDWARD JAMES SPYHALSKI
RICHMOND-Edward James Spyhalski, 82, of Richmond, formerly of Floyd, died Saturday, August 18, 2007. He was born in Chase Township, Wis., one of nine children of Stanley and Petronella Spychalski.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the North Pacific theater. He was an entomologist, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. His professional work involved laboratory and field research in insect and plant disease control. When his three sons were young, Ed was active in Boy Scouting as a scoutmaster, and he loved gardening and woodworking.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Katherine Howard Spyhalski, and a son, William Joseph Spyhalski, as well as four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by: his sons, Edward Jr. and his wife, Cynthia Creasy, of Richmond; John Howard Spyhalski and his wife, Peggy, of Roanoke; his daughter-in-law Joan Spyhalski of Richmond; and four grandchildren, Jack, Katelyn, Anna and Leslie. Also surviving are two sisters, Carol and Dorothy Spychalski of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Ed’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 25, at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, 4401 Forest Hill Ave., in Richmond with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Price-Gibson officiating.

IRENE SPANGLER UNDERWOOD
CHESTERFIELD, MISSOURI-Irene Spangler Underwood, 61, died at her home Saturday, August 18, 2007 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 31, 1946 in Fairborn, Ohio to 1st Lt. John D. Spangler and Ethel Irene Pugh. She was preceded in death by her father 1st Lt. John D. Spangler.
She is survived by: her husband of 39 years, J. Kent Underwood; son, Scott Preston Underwood of St. Louis, wife, Sarah F. Underwood; grandsons, William and Peter; son, Jeffrey Kent Underwood, wife, Kaye Underwood; grandsons, Lane and Tyler of Greely Colorado; mother, Ethel Pugh Spangler Merritt; step-father, Lucius M. Merritt, Sr. of Roanoke, step-siblings, Lucius Merritt, Jr., wife, Brenda of Blacksburg, Mark Merritt, wife Ardis, Martha Gibbs, husband, Tom, and Sarah Lupton of Roanoke; uncle, Leslie C. Pugh; aunt Joyce B. Pugh of Floyd; cousins, John Pugh, wife, Sue of Herndon, Robert Pugh, wife, Theresa of Fredericksburg. Irene graduated from Patrick Henry High School and the Medical College of Virginia (‘68) with a BSRN degree where she was a member of Sigma Zeta honor society. She was a nurse, homemaker, genealogist and accomplished author having published two family genealogical studies and co-authored the book “Nothing to Fear, Nothing to Prove: Living an Aspiring Life” whose message of renewal and spiritual growth have inspired countless readers.
Visitation will be at Schrader Funeral Home, Ballwin, Missouri on Thursday, August 23, with services at St. John Lutheran Church, Ellisville, Missouri on Friday, August 24.
Visitation and services in Virginia will be Monday, August 27, at Mt. Elbert United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and the service will begin at 11 followed by internment at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, where she will be buried beside her father. Services in Virginia will be handled by Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg.
