Perry Acy Armes

“Paw Paw”

Perry Acy Armes “Paw Paw”, 66, went to Heaven on May 19 at Akron General Medical Center after an 8 month courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1940 in Richlands. He served several years with the United States Army and resided in Germany during that time. He lived most of his life in Akron, OH and retired from Technicote Inc. in 2003. He was a member of Calvary Gospel Temple. He will be remembered as a caring and loving father, husband, “paw paw”, and friend. We will remember his crazy sense of humor, his laughter, and his big blue eyes. He was a lover of art, Cleveland Indians, country music fanatic, great cook, and his ultimate love for cheesecake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Georgie Armes; two sisters, Helen and Alice; and seven brothers, Kenneth, Harvey, Donnie, Roger, Glenn, J.B., and twin brother, Jerry.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Loraine; daughters, Michelle L. Armes, Teresa (Howard) Graybeal; special grandson, David Perry Graybeal ("Petie"); brothers, Hassel and Ronnie; sisters, Thelma Newberry of Raven, Gaynell Casey of Richlands; and many friends.

The funeral was conducted May 24 at 11 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home with Rev. Beulah M. Selman and Rev. Jerry Justice officiating.

Interment followed at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

Harlan Thurman Atwell

Harlan Thurman Atwell, 86, of Bishop, died May 20 at a Tazewell hospital.

He was born at Bartley, WV and was the son of the late Franklin and Nannie Harmon Atwell, both of McDowell Co., WV.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Harold Atwell.

Survivors: daughter, Heather Hagerman and husband, David, of Bishop; son, Harlan Atwell, Jr. and wife, Stephanie, of Richlands; sister, Mary Lou Christian of Tampa, FL; and grandchildren, Christopher, Tristan, Dakota, Gavin, Tyler, P.T., Meghan, Brittany and Brandon.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 24 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Oscar Woodall and Pastor Jerry Hagerman officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV.

Ann Mamie Bailiff

Ann Mamie Bailiff, 82, of Cedar Bluff, died May 22 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Richlands and was the daughter of the late John T. and Martha Jane Alley Stranger, both Tazewell County natives.

She had made her home in the Baltimore, MD, area most of her life prior to moving to the Cedar Bluff area 15 years ago. She was a member of Laymans Chapel Church in Richlands.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin D. Bailiff.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: sons, Merlin D. Bailiff, Jr. and wife, Deanna, of Timonium, MD, John D. Bailiff and wife, Gwen, of Oakland, MD; special nephew and niece, Rev. Thomas and Angela Stranger of Cedar Bluff; special caregiver, Cecilia Thompson and the staff of Home Nursing Company; and three grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted May 25 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Stranger officiating.

Interment followed at the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands.

Curtis Lee Bostic

Curtis Lee Bostic, 63, of Bee, died May 24 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Aug. 20, 1943, he was a son of the late Dewey Edward and Mary Elizabeth Osborne Bostic.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was employed as a coal miner for 25 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Cassie Elizabeth Wallace; one sister, Grace Keen and three brothers, Dewey Bostic, Henry (Hen) Bostic and Ervin (Erv) Bostic.

Survivors: wife of 43 years, Phyllis G. Rasnake Bostic; daughters, Rebecca Wallace and husband, Chris, of Breaks, Jama Bostic and Ronnie O’Quinn of Bee, Toni Austin and husband, Terry, of Council; grandchildren, Brandon Wallace, Blake Wallace, Allison Austin and Matthew Austin; brothers, Claude Bostic of Honaker, Ellis Bostic and wife, Virginia, of Council, Jessee Bostic and wife, Linda, and Herman Bostic and wife, Loretta, all of Davenport, Eugene Bostic and wife, Wanda, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Ida Belle Wilson, Beulah Ball, Letha Wilson and husband, Delano, and Angie Combs, all of Council, Thelma Rasnake and husband, William, of Honaker, Velva Wilson and husband, Carter, of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 26 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.

Interment followed in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain.

Martha Lucille Brown

Martha Lucille Brown, 82, of Chicken Ridge, died May 21 in a Richlands hospital.

Born March 22, 1925 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late James Wiley Young and Mary Jane White Young, both Buchanan County natives. She was a life long resident of Buchanan County.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Vernie Loyd Brown; one infant son, Loyd Lee Brown; two sisters, Dorothy Bunton and Josie Ross; and one brother, Columbus Young.

Survivors, loving children: daughter, Norma Jean Smith of South Vienna, OH; sons, James Roy Brown of Jewell Ridge, Curtis Roy Brown of Pounding Mill, Michael Bruce Brown of Cedar Bluff; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Inez Brown of Springfield, OH, Irene Brown of Morristown, TN; and brothers, James Young of Erie, PA, and Tom Young of Destin, FL.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. May 24 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bill Keene officiating.

Burial followed in the Young Cemetery at Chicken Ridge.

Florence Dye

Florence Dye, 80, of Tavares, FL, died May 11 in Florida.

She was born in Mayo and was a homemaker. She moved to Leesburg from Live Oak, FL in 2003. She was a member of Live Oak Christian Church in Live Oak, FL. She was the past Regent of D.A.R. Chapter in St. Joe Bay, FL and was a current member of the Edward Rutledge Chapter in Lake City, FL. She was also a member of U.D.C. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, painting, and also enjoyed traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Dye.

Survivors: son, Buford Lashley and wife, Renee; daughters, Patricia Deese and husband, Bill, Sandra Bouley and husband, Joe; brother, William Seat; sister, Joan Ellis; grandchildren, Tammy Mashburn and James Buddy Eason; and great-grandson, Beau Mashburn.

The funeral was held at Beyer’s Funeral Home in Leesburg, FL.

A committal service will be held at Horton Family Cemetery on Horton Ridge, near Raven, at 12 p.m. June 2 with Rev. Dennis White officiating.

Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of local arrangements.

Jimmy Douglas Griffith

Jimmy Douglas Griffith, 31, of Richlands, died May 25 in Richlands.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of Jimmy Joe and Brenda Joyce Griffith, both of Richlands.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a truck driver.

Additional survivors: sister, Kimberly Heldreth-Rutledge of Beckley, WV; brother, Joseph Albert Griffith of Richlands; niece, Kristen Heldreth-Rutledge; and nephews, Matt, Andy, and Jordan Heldreth-Rutledge.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 27 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Hazel Lee Harrison

Hazel Lee Harrison, 51, of Bishop, died May 19 in Asheville, NC, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 1, 1956 in Bluefield, WV, she was a daughter of Rosa Lee Harrison of North Tazewell.

She was a 1975 graduate of Tazewell High School and was a graduate of the Little French Beauty Academy in Bluefield and was a licensed beautician. She made her home in Tazewell County with her daughter, Sara, all her life to be near and help her mother. She was of the Christian faith.

She was preceded in death by her step father, Elbert Carl Wilfong in 1994.

Additional survivors: daughter, Sara Lee Harrison of the home; sisters, Kathleen Leake and husband, Eldridge, of Asheville, NC, Mary Alyce Hayes of Pounding Mill; brothers, Raymond George Hayes of North Tazewell, Bill Sawyers and wife, Norma, of Pounding Mill; nieces, Morgan Hayes of Pounding Mill, Abigail Leake of Asheville, Christina Sawyers of Pounding Mill; nephews, Billy Sawyers of Pounding Mill, Andrew Sawyers Leake of Asheville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 May 22 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Robert Kitts officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Ervin Johnson

Ervin Johnson, 76, of Rowe, died May 24 in a Richlands hospital.

Born Sept. 25, 1930 in Amonate, WV, he was a son of the late Robert and Carrie Stevens Johnson.

He spent most of his life in the area and attended Oakwood Full Gospel Church. A disabled coal miner, he was employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Company for 17 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Stevens Johnson, and two sisters, Ethel Hess and Eve Johnson.

Survivors: daughter, Lisa Harris and husband, Ricky, of Rowe; grandchildren, Kirsten Sparks and Jordan Harris, both of Rowe; sisters, Pauline Feeser of Honaker, Lola Lester and husband, Guy, of Abingdon; brothers, Barney Johnson of Honaker, Brady Johnson and wife, Donna, of Cliffield; nieces, Darlene Russ and husband, Bill, of Oakwood, Sandra Mabe of Tazewell, Sherry Lawrence of Cosby, TN; and nephew, Stephen Mabe and wife, Sharon, of Phoenix City, AL.

The funeral was conducted at 3 p.m. May 26 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aaron Feeser, Rev. Bill Russ and Rev. Donna Johnson officiating.

Interment followed in the Baldwin Cemetery at Drill.

Charles Vernon “Chuck” Looney, Jr.

Charles Vernon “Chuck” Looney, Jr., 51, of North Tazewell, died May 24 at his home.

Born Feb. 11, 1956 in Grundy, he was a son of Shirley Farmer Looney of North Tazewell and the late Charles Vernon Looney, Sr.

He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and Concord University at Athens, WV. He worked in the mining industry.

Additional survivors: brother, William Darren Looney and wife, Joy; niece, Olivia Holly Looney; nephew, Charles Joshua Looney and wife, Jennifer Nicole Looney, all of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted at 7:30 p.m. May 26 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell with the Rev. Kathy Wilson Parker and Joe D. Sloane officiating.

Burial was private.

Goldie Elizabeth Mitchell

Goldie Elizabeth Mitchell, 79, of Jewell Ridge, died May 21 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Alix and Sallie Horne Short, both Tazewell County natives.

She had made her home in the Jewell Ridge area all of her life and was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Blane Mitchell; one daughter, Betty Jean Mitchell; one son, James William Mitchell; one granddaughter, Melody Ann Meadows; two sisters, Pearly Grizzle and Gussie White; and four brothers, Billy, Authur, James, and Aldn Short.

Survivors: daughter, Connie Meadows of Jewell Ridge; son, Marvin Junior Mitchell and wife, Izell, of Jewell Ridge; daughter-in-law, Judy Mitchell of Jewell Ridge; sisters, Trula Mitchell of Jewell Ridge, Maggie Shelton of Ohio; brothers, Henry Short of Pennsylvania, Charlie Short of North Carolina; grandchildren, Ginger Kinder, Betty Mitchell, Patricia Hurd, Tammie James, Travis Meadows and Phillip Mitchell, with whom she raised and made a home with; great grandchildren, Robert and Rhiannon Hurd and Tyler and Bradley James; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Mark Mitchell and Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating.

Interment followed in the Mitchell Family Cemetery on Stinson Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Willie E. Nunley, Jr.

Willie E. Nunley, Jr., 34, of Maxatawny, PA, formerly of Peterstown, WV, died May 17 in Connecticut.

Born Aug. 13, 1972 at Bluefield, WV, he was a son of Judy Hayton Nunley of Wytheville and Willie E. Nunley, Sr. of Hollybrook.

He was a US Marine Corps veteran.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lee and Vena Hayton, and paternal grandparents, Frank and Effie Nunley.

Additional survivors: wife, Stephanie Klepsch Nunley; brother, Anthony Reece Nunley and wife, Sis, of Narrows; two nieces; and several cousins, uncles, and aunts.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 24 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Chris White officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.

Amelda Sue Stinson

Amelda Sue Stinson, 66, of Honaker, died May 22 at her home.

Born Aug. 6, 1940 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Mitchell and Eula Honaker Stinson.

A lifelong resident of the area, she was a graduate of Honaker High School. She was formerly employed at Russell Manufacturing and as a cook at Honaker High School cafeteria.  She attended Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Stinson and Harry Stinson; two brothers-in-law, Bill Counts and Gonion Edwards; and two nieces, Robin Edwards and Brenda Thompson.

Survivors: sisters, Imogene Thompson and husband, Earl, Claudia Stinson, Wanda Edwards, and Sylvia Vandyke and husband, Bill, all of Honaker; brother, Garnett Stinson of Honaker; special caregivers and friends, Renee Wolford, Susie Rasnake, and Connie Harris; four nephews; and three nieces.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 24 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Claude Rose, Rev. Larry Stinson, and Rev. Coty Stinson officiating.

Interment followed in the Lockhart’s Chapel Cemetery at Honaker.

Elsie M. Wyatt

Elsie M. Wyatt, 82, of Raven, died May 22 in a Lebanon hospital.

She had been living for the past month with her daughter in Lebanon.

Born Feb. 8, 1925 in Trammel, she was the daughter of the late Margie Pearl and Arnold E. Mullins.

She was a loving mother and care giver to many in the Raven community. She was a member of Road Ridge Assembly of God and was a homemaker. She loved and was loved by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her last husband, Belvie Wyatt; her second husband, Charles Elswick; her first husband, Phillip (P.L.) Fleming; two step sons, James Elswick and Donald Elswick; one step daughter, Emma Jean Childress; and two step grandsons.

Survivors: sons, Dennis Mullins of Roanoke, Doug Mullins and wife, Vickey, of Fayetteville, NC, Terry Mullins and wife, Donna, of Ashley, OH, Philip Fleming and wife, Shelia, of Mendota, Michael Elswick and wife, Susan, of Roanoke; daughters, Linda Ball and husband, Donnie, of Greensboro, NC, Barbara Davis and husband, Mitchell, of Raven, Pat Stillwell and husband, Leonard, of Doran, Gayle Martin and husband, Mike, of Lebanon; adopted son, Tommy Deskins and wife, Marilyn, of Hickory, NC; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two adopted grandsons; step children, Mearl Skeens, Rita Whited and Roy Elswick, all of Richlands, Lois Perkins and Geraldine Butcher, both of Dayton, OH, Dexter Elswick of Salisbury, MD, Gertrude Richardson of Raven, Roger Elswick of Paint Lick, Faye Brown of Lebanon; 28 step grandchildren; and 41 step great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. May 25 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jerry Welch and Rev. Charlie McGlothlin officiating.

Burial followed in the Ball Cemetery at Road Ridge.
