HAZEL IRENE REED AKERS
FLOYD-Hazel Irene Reed Akers, 85,passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert Clinton and Sarah Lizzie Reed, husband, Lanford C. Akers, and brothers Russell and Harry Reed.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Mae A. and Dexter Slusher, Floyd; son and fiance, Roy L. Akers and Debbie Johnson, Floyd; granddaughter and fiance, Tessa J. Akers and Brian G. Sutphin, Floyd; great-granddaughter, Brianna Jade Sutphin, Floyd; three step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; twin brother and sister-in-law, Wilbert H. and Ila Reed, Willis; sister, Alma Reed Duncan, Rogersville, TN; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, Floyd, with Reverend Richard Thomas, Reverend Roy Turpin and Reverend Marvin Wade officiating.
Interment followed at Beaver Creek Cemetery. Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd.
GEORGE WESLEY CARR
CHECK-George Wesley Carr, 71, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Posey Lee Carr and Lula Holland Carr. Being the last of ten sons, he was also preceded in death by nine brothers, Erby, Walter, Wayne, Alton, Raymond, Eugene, Elmer, Nelson and Glen Carr, a daughter, Shelia Elaine Carr and a granddaughter, Brittany Anne Hartberger.
He is survived by: daughter, Lee Anne Carr Hartberger and husband, Jamie Lee Hartberger; son, John Wesley Carr; grandchildren, Jamie Aaron Hartberger, Julia Anne Hartberger, and Jordan Carr; special sister-in-law, Pearl Carr; many special nieces and nephews including Jessie Carr and Troy Carr; special friends that were considered as family, Dalton and Joey Smallwood.
Funeral service was held at Oakey’s South Chapel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. Interment followed in Copper Hill Cemetery, Floyd County.
SHELBA FAY COX
WILLIS-Shelba Fay Cox, 87, passed away Tuesday May 8, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cicero and Bessie Gay Cox, brother, Brady Cox, and sisters, Hazel Scaggs and Izola Moye.
He is survived by: brothers, Elba Cox (twin), Archie Cox, Elwood Cox, all of Willis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Josephine Scaggs, Riner, Ovada and Marvie Weeks, Floyd, Agnes and Shelley Montgomery, Radford, special cousin, Bud Cox, Willis; special friends, Leslie Fisher, Riner, Paul Wade, Willis, Joe Reed, Willis.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 10, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Dewayne Troutt, Rev. Harold Cox and Rev. Joe Cox officiating. Interment followed at Irenia Mayberry Cox Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Indian Valley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 257, Floyd, VA 24091.
MAMIE C. CREWS
BASSETT-Mammie Carroll Crews, 84, formerly of Floyd, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2007 at her home in Bassett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Crews, parents, Lindsey and Julie Clemons Carroll, sister, Ethel Compton, brothers, Nelson, Marshall, Leslie and Lacy Carroll.
Surviving are: daughters, Betty Smith, Lori Kessinger and Nannie Crews; sons, Dawson, Philip and Michael Crews; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Also relatives in Floyd including Iva Carroll, niece, Ina C. Martin, nephew, Wayne Carroll and cousin Gracie Gibson.
The funeral was held Tuesday, May 8, at Collins Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Wade and Reverend Barry Sink officiating. Burial followed in Sowers Cemetery in Floyd.
DOROTHY BAILEY HARMON
FLOYD-Dorothy Bailey Harmon, 73, passed away May 12, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Frederick H. Harmon. She was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren for 35 years.
Survivors include: son, Rufus Mark Harmon, Floyd; grandson, Daryl Lee Harmon, Floyd; great-grandchildren, Daryl Lee Harmon, Jr., Austin Taylor Harmon, Stuart; sister and brother-in-law, Neoma and Alvin Altizer, Christiansburg; fiance, Eugene Hylton, Floyd; three nieces.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Rev. Glen Sage officiating. Interment followed at Topeco Cemetery.

O.B. (OREL) HOLLINS
HILLSBOROUGH, NC-O.B. (Orel) Hollins, 84, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2007, in the company of friends and family. He was born to Oakley and Maye Hollins on September 25, 1922, in Roanoke, and raised on a farm in the mountains of Floyd County.
He was point guard and captain of the Check High School basketball team. It was also in these mountains that he became an avid outdoorsman and learned his love of fishing, hunting, farming, and gardening.
He began a career in textiles with Burlington Industries in 1943. He relocated to Hillsborough, NC in 1968 to be Plant Manager of Hillsborough Textiles and was then selected as vice president of Fairy Stone Fabrics. After moving to Hillsborough he and his family became members of the First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and trustee. He also helped found and served on the Board of Directors for the Welcome Finance Company.
He was a lifelong member of the Burlington and Hillsborough Exchange Clubs and was recently awarded the Book of Golden Deeds for his many years of community service.
Through his community leadership he was able to organize the Orange County Family Medical Center and serve as one of its early presidents.
Surviving are: his wife, Ruby Hollins; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Robert Babb and grandchildren, Keaton, Jackson, and Lelia Babb; brother, Astor Hollins; sisters, Malicia Shaver and Elta Wilson; sister-in-law, Helen Sue Smith.
Gifts of remembrance can be made to the First Baptist Church of Hillsborough or choice of charity.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Hillsborough and graveside service at 4:30 p.m. at Head of the River Church. Arrangements handled by Walker’s Funeral Home of Hillsborough.
C. Clay Vest
FLOYD-On Sunday morning, May 13, 2007, Clay Vest peacefully passed away at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Zion, Illinois in the presence of his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Aberdeen Vest.
Survivors include: his loving wife, Ellen Bennett Vest; daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Chris Brevard; father, Horace Vest; sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Maurice Quesenberry; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tim and Gennell Vest, Doug and Angie Vest; mother-in-law, Thelma Lucas; father-in-law, William Bennett; aunts and uncles, Marshall and Judy McNeil, Alfred McNeil, Buddy and Vivian Dickerson, Allene Sweeney, Audrey Lee, Allie Vest, Bertha Sassaman; nephews, Marc Quesenberry, Matthew Vest, Mitchell Nolen; nieces, Megan Quesenberry, Michelle Quesenberry, Charity Nolen, Hannah Vest; two life long friends, Wayne Goff, René Wimmer.
Clay loved the Lord and his church family at Floyd Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He enjoyed reading the Bible. He loved farming and the outdoors, with a passion for tractors and equipment.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18, at Floyd Baptist Church with Dr. Dave Holladay, Pastor Dan Walker and Rev. Dan Agee officiating. Interment will follow at Samuel L. Vest Cemetery.
Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Clay requested that donations be made to Floyd Baptist Church, PO Box 58, Floyd VA 24091, or to the Medical Charities of Floyd County for cancer patients and their families, 100 E. Main St. Room 108, Floyd, VA 24091.Arrangements are being handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd.
MARBRIE NESTER WORRELL
DUGSPUR-Marbrie Nester Worrell, 66, left this world for her eternal home on May 12, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack L. Worrell, her father and mother Sherman Troy Nester and Gladys Goad Nester, a grandson Robert Michael Adams, and a brother Joey Gray Nester.
She is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Marnita and David Hill, Stewartsville, Marlene and Chris Garber, Copper Hill; son, Tim L. Worrell, Bent Mountain; her constant companion, Bingo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elwood and Vada Nester, Layman and Gladys Nester, Morristown, TN, Hillis and Melva Nester of Dugspur; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wavie Olean Dalton, Dugspur, Bettie Dean and Barry Southard, Dugspur, Treva and Chuck Denas, Fredericksburg; sisters-in-law and spouse, Maxine and Harrison Caudill, Rita Worrell; grandchildren Brittany, Zach, and Jeremy Worrell, and Ashley Hill.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vaughan Guynn McGrady Chapel, with Pastor Greg Mills and Pastor Jimmy Marion officiating. Burial followed in Aaron Nester Cemetery.
