Foster Ball
Foster Ball, 72, of Swords Creek, died May 8 at his home.
Born July 19, 1934 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Noah Ball and Rosa Harris Ball.
He had spent most of his life in the area, and was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Seaboard Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA Local #1760, the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Virginia, and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans Camp 840.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia Jane Ball, and one sister, Margaret Bowles.
Survivors: wife, Judy Ball; daughters, Debra Ball of Bristol, TN, Nina James and husband, Glenn, of Waycross, GA, Kathy Perkins and husband, Scotty, of Miller Creek; half-brother, Chester McGlothlin of Grissom Creek; sisters, Sarah Cook of Council, Betty Marsh of Orlando, FL; step-sons, Billy Bostic of Belfast, Harold Rose, Jr. and Justin Rose, both of Council; step-daughters, Chasity Bostic of Honaker, Sylvia Rose of Council; eight grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 11 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Denver Barton officiating.
Interment followed in the Plaster Cemetery at Swords Creek.
Pearl Walker Davis
Pearl Walker Davis, 75, of the Lake Park section of Richlands, died May 7 at his home.
Born Aug. 21, 1931 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Ashley Davis, Sr. and Bertha Osborne Davis.
He had lived in Richlands since 1971 and was a disabled coal miner. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Cantrell Davis, and two infants, Lettie Davis and Lloyd Davis.
Survivors: wife, Wilma Johnson Davis; daughters, Deborah Davis Haydu and husband, Brian, of Richlands, Karen Davis Gobble and husband, Ricky, of Kingsport, TN; sons, Scott Davis and wife, Anita, and George Davis and wife, Regina, all of Richlands; grandchildren, Rebecca Haydu-Jackson and husband, David, of Pensacola, FL, Menda Haydu of Richlands, Shaun Gobble and Matthew Gobble, both of Kingsport, Rhiannon Davis, Sara Davis, Jordan Davis, and Evan Davis all of Richlands; great-grandson, Daniel Gabe Jackson; one expected great-grandchild; one sister, Norma Griffith of Richlands; brothers, twin, Earl W. Davis and wife, Goldie, of Cleveland, OH, Ashley Davis, Jr. and wife, Fran, of West Raven, Roscoe Davis and wife, Ruby, of Raven Nest Branch, Orsen Davis and wife, Pauline, of Richlands, Garland Davis and wife, LouVonne, of Red Root Ridge; uncle, Noah Osborne of Doran; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 11 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.
Entombment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Mausoleum at Richlands.
Florence Owens Deel
Florence Owens Deel, 97?, of Vansant, died May 7 at Buchanan General Hospital at Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sally Owens.
She was united in marriage to Walter Deel on May 14, 1930.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 22, 1989; two sons, Walter Junior Deel and Clayton Deel; three brothers, Ellis Owens, French Owens and Tolby Owens; one sister, Dorsey Dales; and one grandson, Jeffery Deel.
She leaves to mourn her passing: sons, Gary Deel and wife, Sandy, of Vansant, Eddie Deel and wife, Laura, of Michigan; daughters, Irene Slone of Big Rock, Imogene McLeod and husband, Don, of Michigan; sister, Dora Stanley of Haysi; brother, Monroe Owens of Michigan; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.
So all we can say now is sleep on loved one for a little while and by the grace of God we hope to meet you when God calls for the redeemed of his blood.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. May 10 in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Elder Danny Smith, Elder Don Stacy and Elder Ked Stacy officiating.
Burial followed in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park Cemetery at Big Rock.
Eugene E. Johnson
Eugene Edmond Johnson, 74, of Route 1, Vansant, died May 8 in a Richlands hospital.
Born March 2, 1933 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Warner Dennis Johnson and Hannah Elizabeth Shephard Johnson.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by United Coal Company. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Louise Barton Johnson; one daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Johnson; two brothers, Memphis Gaines Johnson and Rufus Baker Johnson; and two sisters, Orie Anderson and Nancy Looney.
Survivors: son, Harold Edmond Johnson and wife, Jackie, of Rt. 1, Vansant; daughters, Caroline Kay Stevens and husband, Darrell, of Council, Deborah Lynn Hackey of Honaker, Sandra Jean Johnson of Lumberton, NC, Patricia Sue Barton and husband, Clifton, of Davenport; grandson, Anthony Johnson; granddaughters, Angela Crabtree Barton, Nicole Crabtree Fields, Cheryl Stevens Rose, Kayla Stanley, Amber Barton, and Amanda Barton; sister, Ella Marie Bostic of Council; three great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 4 p.m. May 11 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Denver Barton and Bro. David Owens officiating.
Interment followed in the Ratliff Cemetery on Combs Ridge.
Connie Lou Lester
Connie Lou Lester, 67, of North Tazewell, died May 11 in a Roanoke hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Piqua, OH, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Tressa Brush Creager, both Piqua natives.
She had made her home in the North Tazewell area for the past 40 years and was a former secretary for Ceramic Technologies.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Carter Lester.
Survivors: sister-in-law and best friend, Debbie Lester of North Tazewell, and brother, James L. Creager of Piqua.
Services and burial will be private.

John “Ted” Lowe
John “Ted” Lowe, 77, of the Adria area of North Tazewell, died May 9 at his home.
Born May 13, 1929 at Goody, KY, he was the son of the late Albert J. Lowe and Mae Davidson Lowe.
He worked 20 years with the McDowell County School System, and more recently worked 20 years with Consolidation Coal Company.
He was a member of the UMWA Local #2322 at Amonate.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie Lowe, and an infant daughter, Patricia Ann Lowe.
Survivors: wife, Patty Ruth Belcher Lowe; sons, James Keith Lowe of Adria, Howard Steven Lowe of Knoxville, TN; grandsons Jonathan Keith Lowe and Joshua Aaron Lowe; and two nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 12 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Fields and the Rev. Jonah Sparks officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Callie Matney
Callie Matney, 74, of Tazewell, died May 8 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.
Born March 6, 1933 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Estil Matney and Pinkie Looney Matney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny E. Matney and Gerald E. Matney.
Survivors: sister, Mary J. Lester and husband, Lew R. Lester, of Cedar Bluff; brother, Leon A. Matney and wife, Belva Jean Matney, of Pounding Mill; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. May 10 at the Grove Church Cemetery at Cumberland.

Roberta E. McGraw
Roberta E. McGraw, 91, of Bandy, died May 12 in Tazewell following an extended illness.
Born at Bandy, she was the daughter of the late Reece and Julia Payne Young.
She was a member of the Mt. Herman Methodist Church at Bandy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Janis Palmer, and one brother, General Roger Young.
Survivors: son, Jerry (Ronald) McGraw and wife, Hazel, of Cleveland, OH; sisters, Betty Young of Kingsport, TN, Dorothy Hayes of Falls Branch, TN; brothers C.B. Young of Richlands, Hugh Young of Georgetown, TX; special friend, Steve Dakin; special nephew, Michael Griffith; dear friend and special care giver, Wanda Lester; and several nieces and nephews.

Everet R. “Ebb” Mitchell
Everet R. “Ebb” Mitchell, 72, of Cucumber, WV died May 11 at McDowell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gary, WV.
Born May 12, 1935 at Caretta, WV, he was a son of the late Pose and Hattie Barrett Mitchell.
He attended the Berwind Revival Center and was of the Holiness faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors: Beulah “Boots” Mitchell of Welch, WV, who was a special person to him; daughter, Tammy Hutchinson and husband, Frank, of Taylorsville, NC; sons, Jeff Mitchell and Allen Mitchell, both of Cucumber, Johnny Mitchell of Newhall, WV; sisters, Margie Parker of High Shoals, NC, Thelma Hicks of Brinfield, IN, Lettie Brewster and Mary Nelson, both of Cucumber, Stella Zallar of Bishop, Helen Ward of Warriormine, WV; brother, Byrd Mitchell of Berwind, WV; grandchildren, Christopher Mitchell, Chelsy Mitchell, Tiera Mitchell, Eric Mitchell, Zachary Hutchinson, and Destiny Hutchinson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Okie Mae Altizer Muncy
Okie Mae Altizer Muncy, 96, of Shop Hollow, WV, went home to be with the Lord May 11 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV.
Born April 15, 1911 at War, WV, she was a daughter of the late Henry Lee Altizer and Patty Sparks Altizer.
She was a member of the Independent Church of the Living God at Shop Hollow. She was a special mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and aunt. We are thankful to the Lord for letting us have Mom all these years. She loved attending church when her health permitted, as well as canning her vegetables and fruit, cooking for all her family, crocheting and watching her religious programs.
She and her husband, Izear, helped raise her sister and brother-in-law’s children after her sister Rebecca’s death.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Izear Muncy; three sisters, Susie Altizer Pack, Menty Lou Altizer Myers, and Rebecca Altizer Muncy; four brothers, George W. Altizer, Riley Altizer, Henry Roosevelt Altizer and Frank Altizer; special sister-in-law, Clara Muncy Rutherford; special son, Cecil Muncy who died in 2006; son-in-law, Tom Harman; grandson, Roger Lee Graham; granddaughter, Sheri Lynn Muncy Brown; two nephews, Raymond Muncy and Buddy Lee Muncy; and two nieces, Annie Muncy and Connie Muncy Branch. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Left to cherish her memories are: daughters, Eloise Graham and husband, Lee, of Cucumber, WV, Effie Collins and husband, Sherman, of Shop Hollow, Shirley Harman of the Dix Creek community of Bandy; sons, Lawrence Muncy and wife, Madeline, and James E. Muncy and wife, Cathy, all of Warriormine, WV, Earl Muncy and wife, Stella, of Newhall, WV, Elmer Muncy, Walter Muncy and wife, Annie, Wilmer Muncy and wife, Helen, and Kenny Muncy and wife, Rosie, all of Shop Hollow; 20 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and nephews, Burley Muncy and Charley Muncy, who helped take care of her, and Thurman Muncy and Denny Muncy.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. May 14 at the Independent Church of the Living God in Shop Hollow with the Rev. John Muncy and the Rev. Jesse Estep officiating.

Howard Tivis Patton
Howard Tivis Patton, 70, of Richlands, died May 13 in a Johnson City, TN, hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Richlands and was the son of the late Earl T. and Edna Mildred Burke Patton, both former Jewell Ridge, residents.
He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was the former manager of Sears of Richlands for 31 years. He was a Richlands High School Class of 1955 graduate and had attended Clinch Valley College. He was a member of the Tazewell-Russell Shrine, Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF & AM, lifetime member of the Richlands Rescue Squad, and had served on numerous boards and committees both for the Town of Richlands and Tazewell County. He was the chief election officer for local voting precincts and was a former winner and participant for over 20 years in the Dupont World Amateur Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC.
He was a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands.
Survivors: wife, Jean Shortt Patton; daughters, Kimberly Dawn Dula and husband, Terry, of Tazewell, Barbette Patton and husband, Michael Smith, of Cedar Bluff; sister, Linda Kay Patton of Richlands; brother, Billy Charles “Bill” Patton and wife, Karen, of Richlands; and grandchildren, Phillip Dula, Carly Dula, Matthew Dula, and Jackson Patton-Smith.
The funeral will be conducted May 17 at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands with Rev. Jim Denton and Rev. Stafford Compton officiating.
Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. May 16 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands and one hour prior to the service May 17 at the church.

Gladys Ruby Reed
Gladys Ruby Keene Reed, 84, of Mavisdale, went to be with the Lord May 7 at her home suffering from an extended and courageous battle with Bi-Polarism and Dementia.
Born April 3, 1923 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Luther M. and Bessie Presley Keene.
She resided at Mavisdale her entire life. She was a member of the first graduating class of Garden High School. She was a member of the Garden United Methodist Church, Oakwood, and also attended the Garden Baptist Church for several years with her late husband, Kyle. She was a retired postmaster of 28-years succeeding her late father, Luther.
In addition to her parents, she joins in heaven, two brothers, Rufus and Bill Keene, and her beloved husband of eight-years, Kyle Reed.
Survivors: daughter, Janis and husband, Kyle Meadows, of Mavisdale; step-daughter, Helen and husband, Fred Elkins, of Lake City, FL; sister, Edith Honaker of Mavisdale; a devoted, loving grandson who adored his “Mammaw,” James David Meadows, of Johnson City, TN; a very special caregiver of six-years, Charlotte Varney of Keen Mountain; and other wonderful caregivers for the past two-years, Nancy Wilcox, Bonnie Dye, Maxine Perry and Caroline Street, and Carol Meadows, and close family friend who was so good to Gladys and special friend Jackie Keen.

Belinda Jones Thomas
Belinda Jones Thomas, 55, of Rt. 2, Grundy, died May 10 at her home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of John F. Jones, of Abingdon, and the late Layuna Stiltner Jones.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of the Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, former beautician and former employee of the Family Dollar Store, Vansant.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy W. Jones; one niece, Kelly S. Clifton; and one nephew, Kevin Branham.
Additional survivors: loving husband of 39 years, Johnny K. Thomas; sons, Jody and wife, Becky Thomas, and Chad and wife, Heather Thomas, all of Grundy; sister, Mary Ann and husband, Ervin Stiltner, of Abingdon; brothers, Jack and wife, Grace Jones, of Maxie, Jeff and wife, Connie Jones, of Abingdon, Jerry and wife, Vicky Jones, of Grundy; granddaughter, Megan Thomas; grandsons, Josh Thomas and Cade Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.

Benny Keith Ward
Benny Keith Ward, 27, of Jewell Ridge, died May 9 at a Johnson City, TN, hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of Harold Keith Ward and the late Terry Ann Gilbert Ward.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Raymond and Ruby Gilbert, and his paternal grandparents, Steward “Red” and Nora Ward.
Additional survivors: sons, Wesley Blaine Ward and Caleb Gauge Ward, both of the home; fianc?e, Holly Kitts; and brother, Marcus Allen Ward and wife, Angel, of Jewell Ridge.
A graveside service was held May 12 at 3 p.m. at the Sawyers Family Cemetery located on Smith Ridge, near Jewell Ridge, with the Rev. Randy Webb officiating.
