Barker
Herbert Barker, 77, of Troutdale died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn.
He was born Oct. 26, 1929, in Troutdale to the late Nicholas H. and Jincy Comer Barker.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Osborne Barker of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and David Neal of Troutdale; granddaughter, Samantha Robertson of Troutdale; six sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary James of Grant, Alma and Gene Joines of Sparta, N.C., Bobby Taylor of Oak Hall, Arvinia Heart and Lettie Mae Dean, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Betty Tibbs of Rural Retreat; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Blanche Barker of Marion and Dexter and Pauline Barker of Bland; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Aug. 28, 2007, in Troutdale Baptist Church in Troutdale. Interment was held in Troutdale Cemetery. The Rev. Ken Riggins and the Rev. Darrell Lambert officiated the services. Military rites were conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post #4667.

Buchanan
Mary Pauline May Buchanan, 66, of Whitetop died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
She was born March 6, 1941 at Lansing, N.C., to the late Paul and Ossie Carpenter May and was also preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Buchanan; three sisters, Martha Eller, Grace Baldwin and Ruby Young; brother, Lee May; and a grandson, Daniel Isaiah Testerman.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne Buchanan of the home, Shirley and Ron Haywood of North Wilkesboro, N.C., Terry Griffey of Marion, Melissa and Dwayne Testerman of Lansing, N.C., and Melinda and Eddie Walls of Damascus; brothers and sisters, Donnie and Donna May of Lansing, N.C., Hazel and Don Surber and Ruth Taylor, all of Whitetop; one granddaughter and six grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Miller Cemetery at Whitetop. Pastor Miriam Dakin and Pastor Kathy Hutton officiated the services.

Griffitts
Frank Griffitts, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at his home in Chilhowie.
He was born in Smyth County to the late Frank S. and Nannie Taylor Griffitts.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Thelma Cannon Griffitts; his children, Beverly Karen Funk and Teresa Gail Goodman; his three brothers, Billy Griffitts, Paul Griffitts and Ralph Griffitts; and his two sisters, Eleanor Lamie and Mildred Hess.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and was a lifetime member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his grandson, Chad Funk and wife, Laura, of Atkins; his great-grandchildren, Allyson and Madison; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Norman Harris and Nell and John Whitely, all of Saltville, and Ruth Patrick of Ceres.
Funeral services were conducted Monday morning, Aug. 27, 2007, at Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie. The Rev. Mike Sage officiated the services. Entombment followed in Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Full military honors were rendered by Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667.

Horne
George Washington Horne, 81, of Tazewell died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.
Born July 4, 1926 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Condairy Horne and Rebecca Asbury Horne. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended the Church of God. He was an avid flea marketer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Horne; two sisters, Millie Jarvis and Bertha Gates; three brothers, Tom Horne, Bill Horne, and Jim Horne; and best friend, John Witten Abel.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Helen Shepard Horne; three daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda and the Rev. James Witten of Chilhowie, Betty Horne of Roanoke, and Laura Horne Bevis of Clemmons, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, George M. and Susan Horne of Tazewell; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Shirley Horne of Salem; four grandchildren, Sam and Kristy Witten, Ashley and Brian Fox, Olivia Witten McCarty, and Melissa Horne; four great-grandchildren, MaKayla and Bryson Witten, Austin and Zachary Fox; brothers and sisters in law; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Robert and Mary Abel and Nell Monk.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday evening, Aug. 25, 2007. The Rev. Dan Absher and the Rev. Mitch Nichols officiated the services. Graveside services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2007, at the Neel Cemetery in Tannersville.

Lane
Ella Mae Lane, 85, of Damascus died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at her residence.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was the daughter of the late Ben and Ida Williams. She was a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens and the Laurel Community Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Lane; three brothers, David Williams, Robert Williams and Roy Williams; and two sisters, Alice Warner and Eva Hill.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Eileen Lane and Frank and Sallie Lane, all of Damascus; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Elsie Williams of Medina, Ohio; three grandchildren, Ralph Lane, Ray Lane and Jennifer Snead; seven great-grandchildren, Tasha, Jonathan, Nicole, Paige, Richard, Brady, and Kasey; two great-great grandsons, Gregory and Leland; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2007, in the Garrett Funeral Chapel. Pastor Fred Minnick and Pastor Paul Naye officiated the services. The committal service and interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus.

Lawson
Natasha Reneé Lawson, 34, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Brenda N. Lawson.
Survivors include her father, Roger Lawson of Glade Spring; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2007, in the Henderson Family Cemetery. The Rev. Tim Norris officiated the services.
The family received friends Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2007, at the funeral home, prior to procession to the cemetery.

Shelton
Paris Shelton, 82, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Smith
Dr. O.O. Smith Jr., 87, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at his home in Marion.
He was born Nov. 16, 1919, to the late Oscar Orton and Ruth Reeves Smith in Roaring Gap, N.C.
In 1926, he and his family moved to Independence, where he grew up.
He graduated from Independence High School in 1937. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Emory & Henry College in 1941 and his doctor of medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1944. He served his surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic from 1945 to 1950. He was a member of the Smyth County Medical Society, Medical Society of Virginia, past president and member of the Southwestern Virginia Medical Society, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Society, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Priestly Surgical Society of the Mayo Clinic, International College of Surgeons, member of the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association, and the Alumni Association of the Medical College of Virginia. He was also a member of the Emory & Henry College Board of Visitors.
He began his practice in Marion at the Lee Memorial Hospital in 1950. He along with his cousin, Dr. Emmett V. Richardson Sr., established Marion General Hospital in 1953. Later the two hospitals merged forming the Smyth County Community Hospital. As a founding father of Smyth County Community Hospital, he served as a member of the medical staff until his retirement in 1997. He served as a member of the Board of Directors and remained as president emeritus of the Smyth County Community Hospital until his death.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church since arriving in Marion.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Anne Hunt Smith; two brothers, Charles Preston Smith and John Reeves Smith; and two sisters, Mary Ruth Smith Orr and Cora Alta Smith Hoffman.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Neitch Orr Smith of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Walters of Roanoke, Betsy and Robert McKee of Wayland, Mass., and Sarah and Michael Willis of Union, Ky.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David Smith and wife, Dr. Mia Wessels, of Abingdon; two stepsons, Robert Patrick Orr and wife, Denise, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Derek Allen Orr and wife, Deborah, of Marion; one sister, Anna Price, of Sparta, N.C.; one brother, James A. Smith, of Independence; 13 grandchildren, Robert and Kevin McKee, Christopher, Michael and Julia Smith, Josh, Lauren and Sydney Willis, Savannah, Julianne and Brennan Orr and Alexander and Nicole Orr; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Lambert, Dr. Fred Austin, and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion.
