A single-vehicle motorcycle wreck Sunday left the rider injured and facing possible charges.
Virginia State Trooper J.E. Ferland responded to the scene and said Monday that Charles Gordon Trail, 59, of Marion, was riding his 2008 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic south on Highway 16 adjacent to the lake in Hungry Mother State Park.
“He was following a vehicle out of the park,” Ferland said. The vehicle slowed, and Trail braked to avoid colliding with it, he said.
“The bike went down and Mr. Trail was injured with a possible broken ankle or leg and a broken collarbone,” Ferland said.
The wreck happened at 2:20 p.m., Ferland said.
Rescue workers transported Trail to Smyth County Community Hospital where he was airlifted by a Wings Air Rescue helicopter and flown to Johnson City Medical Center, Ferland said.
Charges against Trail are pending, based on witnesses’ statements, Ferland said. The vehicle Trail was following was not otherwise involved, he said.
The motorcycle sustained damage, mostly superficial, amounting to about $800, Ferland said.
