Richlands and Clinch River reversed roles in Sunday’s game in the District 11 10-11 year-olds All-Star Little League baseball tournament at Flanary Field.
Clinch River had handed the Blues a 12-2 setback on Friday in the tournament’s opening round. Richlands returned the favor and then some on Sunday in an 11-1 win which ended Clinch River’s run in the double elimination tournament.
The Blues advanced to the championship round against undefeated Honaker with Sunday’s win. Richlands would have to defeat the Tigers twice to capture the tournament championship and advance to the state tournament at a later date. The fi rst of possibly two championship games was scheduled for Monday, June 25. Details of that game and a second championship game (if necessary) will appear in next week’s sports section of the Richlands News Press.
The Richlands hitting attack was much more than Clinch River could handle as the Blues’ bats, which were mostly silent through Blues lose one, but win one the tournament’s fi rst two games, suddenly exploded for nine hits Sunday.
Jay Harrison led the way offensively for Richlands with three hits and a pair of RBI. Jonathan “Shaggy” Cochran had another big day with a triple and double. He knocked in two runs. Josh Doud, Seth Keene, Wesley Mays and Andy Guerriero collected one hit each.
Keene and Guerriero had two RBI apiece. Zack Johnson, Bradley Jordan and Allen Proffi tt batted in one run each.
Guerriero started on the mound for Richlands and allowed just two hits. He struck out two batters and walked two. Keene relieved Guerriero after the Richlands starter had retired one batter and given up his only two hits to open the bottom of the fourth inning. Keene did not allow a hit and walked one batter.
Richlands scored in each inning, plating three runs in both the fi rst and second frames, one in the third and four in the fourth. Clinch River scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth.
