Letter to the editor: Irrational reaction

To the Editor
I am writing this letter in response to the review of “An American Christmas” by Wayne Quesenberry in Nov. 12 edition of the Enterprise. While I do appreciate Mr. Quesenberry’s kind words about my performance, I am extremely offended by his unnecessarily cruel and inappropriate comments about some of my co-stars. I have no problem with the fact that he did not like the show and some of the performances in the show because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I am sure; however, there was a much more professional way to get his point across than to compare one of my co-stars to a pedophile and to suggest that one of my other co-stars should be in a nursing home in the coma unit. These comments were absolutely uncalled for and are hurtful to all of us who share the stage with these two men. I personally feel very lucky to have both of them as my co-stars and think that they both have a lot to offer these roles. From what I have heard from our audience members about the show they would definitely agree with me on that. I can’t even begin to imagine what could have happened the night Mr. Quesenberry attended the show to cause him to have such a violent and irrational reaction to it.
As for Mr. Quesenberry’s questions about the show itself I can assure him that the show takes place in present day and does not involve any sort of time warp since he seems so upset about that. If he had been paying attention to the show instead of trying to think of “witty” things to say in his review he would have heard the Narrator explain that the show the Dad was attending in Act II was a 40’s style tribute show not that it was taking place in WW II. I am very proud of this show and of my entire cast. There is nothing that makes me prouder than hearing how much the audience loved the show and how much the patriotic portion of the show moved them. As I said before, I am not upset that Mr. Quesenberry did not enjoy the show but next time he writes a review he should take a moment to think about how what he says will affect people who have done nothing to him to deserve such an attack. Pedophiles and comas are not things to joke about and I am disappointed that the Enterprise would allow such things to even be printed. I hope in the future Mr. Quesenberry and the Enterprise will use better judgment and find a more objective way of critiquing a show or a performance. As far as I am concerned, Sam and Ted are owed an apology.
Sincerely,
Karen Zucco Melton

Reader Reaction:

I agree with your complaint about the juvenile comments from Mr. Quesenberry. I sent this response. I have also posted my review of his review on the newspaper website. I was really amazed it got by the editing function of the paper.

Dinner Theatre Review By Wayne Quesenberry

I am surprised at the ruthlessness and vitriol that you dredged up in your review of the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre presentation of “An American Christmas”.  If you didn’t like the show, I can see a review that points out the failings in a pointed and direct manner.  But to employ such simply malicious prose is uncalled for in my opinion.  I mean what is the justification for such comments as:  “under a table in the beer garden” or “by diabetics or anyone with a strong gag reflex” or “unit for comatose residents” or “thinner than an aneurysm”.  Your ever so cute “A pedophile could have mustered more emotion over the children than he did” is simply sick.  I’m sure your mother is very proud of you for that.

Now, I have not seen this production but have enjoyed most of their presentations.  I think generally they present a most professional theatre experience.  If you think the presentation is a turkey, you can say so without being disgusting in your descriptions.  In reading your review most closely between the lines, it seems your opinion is that the storyline was weak but the singing was great.  HEY! It is called a musical!

Most recently, I was in the Gatlinburg area and enjoyed a dinner theatre there.  The presentation was good and the singing was great but the dancing was step 1-2-3 and you could actually watch the dancers counting their steps.  This is something I have never seen at Wohlfahrt Haus.  Generally Wohlfahrt Haus has a professional presentation, good vocals and great dancing.  They do not deserve your trite, immature and amateur review.

Sincerely,

Ron Kime
