For the FCHS girls’ soccer team, getting to the next level is easy to define: beat Glenvar.
But beating the Highlanders hasn’t happened in the program’s brief history. The Highlanders added another victory in their series against the Buffaloes, beating Floyd 5-2 at Floyd Monday, May 5.
“At the start, I thought we played really well,” said first-year coach Liesl Narrow. “But once they scored their first goal, we just fell apart.”
The Highlanders pumped their early advantage to a 4-1 halftime lead. In the second half, the teams played a 1-1 standoff resulting in the final score.
Samantha Morris got Floyd on the scoreboard in the first half off a penalty kick. Carolyn Blevins had an unassisted goal in the second half.
Narrow praised the defensive efforts of Grace McCutchan. “She has been playing well on defense over the last several matches.”
The Buffaloes will likely face Glenvar in the first round of the Three Rivers District tournament in two weeks. The Highlanders have finished second in the district to Radford every year.
Radford, the defending state champion, and Glenvar, have been the regional representatives in the Group A state tournament each year.
“I know we can play with them and beat them,” Narrow said. “We just have to finish our chances.”
The Buffaloes also suffered a 6-0 loss to Radford at Radford Thursday, May 1. Shasta Sowers had 27 saves for the Buffaloes.
The Lady Buffs host James River tonight (Thursday). The final home match of the season is May 13 against George Wythe, which is also Senior Night.
