> Young Gun Streak Continues
By JUSTIN GREER/Correspondent
A short period of rain caused a minor delay in the racing activities at Wythe Raceway Saturday night. Track preparations were complete and hot laps had been run when the rains fell. Thanks to the track packing crew, the track was sealed in again, which made the racing that much better.
The Pro Mini stock Heat races were the first races of the night. Bland driver Tim Everson took the win in Heat 1. This secured the pole starting position for Everson in the 20 lap feature.
Everett Cox, Austinville, was the winner of the second Heat race.
The Pepsi Hornets saw a first time winner. Jon Keyes of Sugar Grove picked up his very first feature win Saturday. Cole Dutton, Chilhowie, pulled up on Keyes bumper several times, but just could not complete the pass. Cody Umberger, Rural Retreat, had another good run coming home in third.
Clinton Cook of Radford took the Berglund pole award for the third time this year in the Late Model Division. 18.857 was his official time. Ty Dillon of Lewisville, N.C., timed in second.
The feature was set for 25 laps. Cook and Dillon led the field to the green flag. The initial start was waved off for a spin. This would be the only caution of the night. On the following restart Dillon went to the high side to take the lead. Cook followed in second. A few laps into the race Ryan Gifford of Lewisville, N.C., pulled up to Cook and battled for a few laps before Gifford completed the pass into second place. Matt Parks of Wytheville and Ron Thomas, Rock Hill, S.C., race hard for the fourth and fifth spot respectively.
Dillon cruised to the victory after leading every lap. Gifford held on to second and Cook held on for third. So far this season a driver younger than age 25 has won every Berglund Late Model race. It will be interesting to see if that streak will continue next week. Dillon is the fourth different winner in this class this year.
The Cook’s Clean Center Super Street Division was filled with excitement as always. The win went to Jimmy Tate, Wytheville. This is his first win of the 2008 season. Eddie Bentley of Sugar Grove overcame some adversity in the early going of the race. On lap 2 he had a flat tire, which relegated him to the rear of the field, but Bentley, ran a smooth, patient race. At the end he came back for a third place finish. Tim Robinson of Marion also had a good run coming home in second.
The Pro Mini Stock 20 lap feature saw three cautions. A stall in turn 4, a flat tire also in turn 4, and debris. Previous winners Randy Kincer, Rural Retreat, and Doug Monday, Max Meadows, had to start the event in 9th and 10th place. They were not back there long though. Monday and Kincer both made their way to the front.
Kincer had the slight edge on Monday, but the racing was super between the two. Kincer pulled out his second win of the season. Monday was second and Rural Retreat’s R.K. Dix was third.
The Open Wheel Modified Class is growing and the racing is getting very exciting. Fred Riley of Rural Retreat picked up his second win of this season. This win did not come easy though. Last week’s winner Ron Lawson, Austinville, was right behind him every step of the way. One slip would have cost Riley the race, but he drove flawlessly. Lawson crossed the finish line right behind him and Dix was right behind him. The caution flag flew two times once for a spin and then for a wreck that involved four cars.
Jake Eaton of Bland took the Ucar victory. Tim Widener of Marion finished second. Cody Tate of Rural Retreat came home in third position and Dakota Wilson also of Rural Retreat finished fourth.
The Children’s Gold Rush was postponed due to the rain, which made the track too muddy for the coins to be spread out. A makeup date will be announced at a later date. Check WytheRaceWay.com for more details on race day information and the make up date. Next week will feature Twin 16 Super Street races as well as double points!
