BLOG:
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, the Hungry Mother Art Festival in Marion is the place to be.
I can’t even begin to describe all the clever crafts and delicious treats that await you - but I’ll give it a shot.
I headed out to the park this morning with my mom, sister and brother-in-law-to-be in tow who were all up visiting from Louisiana. My nearly-3-year-old Jonah was along for the adventure - he’s always my touchstone for deciding if an event is good enough to recommend or repeat next year. He gave HMAF a sticky thumbs-up. You may have seen him “walking” his wooden duck around the park trails today. I didn’t catch the vendors’ name, but his little ducks were cheaper than the ones farther into the park.
The first thing I smelled was kettle corn….. yum! I was hoping it was the same vendor from the Davis Valley winery festival - alas, these folks were from Arizona. But that didn’t stop us from buying a big ol bag for $5. And it was delicious! You can’t go wrong with kettle corn.
A few notes of interest: handmade birdhouses and furniture crafted by patients at the Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute - they even had a Jonah-sized chair and Hokie birdhouses (disclaimer - I will endorse, promote and cheer for VT, UVA, Emory & Henry, et al….. but my heart is purple and gold LSU!); Honey and molasses was drawing a large crowd of Red Hat Society ladies; I found the most beautiful glass windchimes made out of wine, beer and Tabasco bottles - vendors are out of Florida and I predict they will do pretty well over the weekend; all sorts of pottery and dishware; olive oil soaps; beautiful dream boxes made by a couple from Buchanan and much much more. I will do my best to sample plenty more over the weekend. But for now, Mama needs a nap. I’ll have more photos later today, and be sure to grab Wednesday’s edition of the Smyth County News & Messenger for even more coverage.
