Home court thriller: volleyball team goes down to the wire in opener

The varsity volleyball team took Group AA Carroll County to the limit, losing the home opener to the Cavaliers 3-2 Thursday, August 30. One of Floyd’s losses was by four points and another was by five.
Scores for the match were 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 6-15.
After winning the first game, Floyd jumped out to a 10-0 start in game two. Carroll finally scored and got within 14-6. The Cavs tied the game at 15-15 and went on for the win .
Floyd fell behind 5-1 in the third game and rallied for a 12-12 tie. The Buffaloes regained the lead and were ahead by three to four points the rest of the way.
In the fourth game Carroll jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Floyd cut the lead to two several times, the last coming at 20-18. The Cavaliers finished with a 5-2 run for the victory.
Floyd went up 2-0 in the fifth game, but Carroll finished on a 15-4 run to win game and match.
Idalina Walker was 30/35 serving with four aces, seven kills and three blocks, including a stuff block. Alyssa Knapp was 16-17 serving with two aces. Molly Brown had 10 killls and four blocks, inncluding one stuff block.
Arlene Montgomery and Shasta Sowers anchored the defense with 14 digs each. Sowers was 8/8 serving with an ace and two kills.
The Lady Buffs went 0-2 in a Saturday tournament at Bassett High School. The tournament format was best 2-of-3.
In the first matchup, Floyd met Patrick County, and dominated the first game, winning 25-11.
After someline experimentation, the team lost momentum and fell in the second game 25-18.
Floyd lost the third game to the Cougars 15-4.
Idalina Walker was 14/15 serving, with six aces and two blocks, both stuff-blocks.
Molly Brown led the offense with six kills and had two blocks, one of which was a stuff-block.
Lydia Prokosch contributed two service aces.
The Buffaloes met host Bassett in their second match, and it followed a script similar to the opener.
Floyd led much of the way, enjoying leads of 23-17 and 24-19. The Bengals rallied for a 24-24 tie before the Buffaloes got two points for the 26-24 overtime decision.
The second game was close as well, with Bassett taking a late 23-16 lead before Floyd mounted a comeback effort.
The Buffaloes scored seven straight points to pull to a 23-23 tie, and had game and match point twice, at 24-23 and 25-24.
But Floyd couldn’t finish out the match as the Bengals got to a 25-25 tie and then got the two final points for a 27-25 win that tied the match at 1-1.
In the decisive third match, the score was tied 5-5. Floyd was only down 10-7 before Bassett pushed the lead to 14-7.
The Buffaloes got a point on the side-out, but a missed served ended the game and match with the Bengals capturing the 15-8 win.
Idalina Walker again stood out in the service game. She put in 12 of her 13 serves, including four aces.
Molly Brown had a perfect serving match, going 16 for 16. Brown also had three aces.Alyssa Knapp also had a good serving day, putting in 10 of 11 and serving two aces.
Walker had four kills and three stuff-blocks. Brown had eight kills and two blocks, including one stuff block.
Shannon McDaniel had three kills.
Vanessa Quesenberry had eight digs and served two aces.
Floyd travels to Galax tonight (Thursday) for a non-district match with the Maroon Tide.
