Jessica Hollandsworth won the Virginia Golf Association’s Junior Girls’ state championship last week at the Independence Golf Club at Midlothian. She had a record score on the first day of the 36 hole tournament, shooting a six-under 66.
Her four-under 68 on the second day shattered the record set last year by Courtney Ellenbogen of Blacksburg. This was the first time ever for a player to shoot a pair of rounds in the 60s in the tournament’s 38-year history.
“I shot par on the first four holes; then I got two birdies and just kept going,” Hollandsworth said. “I only had one bogey for the day.” She capped her record setting day with seven birdies.
On the second day of the tournament, she had no bogeys. “That was a personal first for me,” Hollandsworth said. “I’d never had a bogey-free round before.”
Her 66-68—134 total was 15 strokes better than runner up Brigitt Baker, who shot a 79-70—149.
Final standings:
Hollandsworth 66-68—134
Baker 79-70—149
Greenlief 73-76—149
Rohrbaugh 76-77—152
Brightwell 79-76—155
Ross 76-79—155
Kim 76-81—157
Allen 77-80—157
Maybin 79-81—160
Steinhagen 79-82—162
Lee 83-87—170
Jessica’s sister, Amanda, was second in the 11-and-under division, with nine holes each over two days. Her 46-40—86 was seven strokes behind winner Cassidy England.
“I love that course,” Jessica Hollandsworth said. “I’ve played it about six times, and I always do well there.”
Hollandsworth won the junior girls state championship two years ago, and finished second last year to Ellenbogen.
